It was there that I learned the practical application of the research skills taught in the FSU classroom. It was also there that I met Michael Sarasti and made life-long friends like Anthony Marvin. Characters like Mike and Anthony made life outside of Diffenbaugh interesting and my fours years in Tallahassee memorable. Lucky for me, back home, Mike continues making my life interesting and memorable. I would also like to recognize Dr. Rayburn who always went the extra mile to support me. He offered advice, gave me countless opportunities to develop my research skills, and always checked on my health. Dr. Heald shared his vast knowledge of content analysis and intercoder reliability with me. On the first day of my first graduate class, Research Methods, I told Dr. Heald that I was worried because I had always done poorly in math. He replied, “Don’t worry. I can teach math to anyone.” He was right. I earned my first “A” in math that semester. I’d also like to acknowledge my sister, Maura Jennings, for helping format my dissertation. Without her, I’d still be trying to figure out how to insert roman numerals. Maura, Katie and Erin Fitzgerald thank you for filling my Tallahassee apartment with laughter and white- powdered donuts. Page 45 vii ABSTRACT A content analysis examined offensive language spoken on popular morning radio programs on the five highest-rated radio stations offering live-streaming audio over the Internet in the top ten U.S. markets. While concerns over indecency have long existed, renewed interest in the issue of indecency on television and radio was sparked during the 2004 Super Bowl half- time show and, as evident in the 2007 firing of radio personality Don Imus, continues to be of concern today. The purpose of this study was to identify the amount and kind of offensive language spoken on-air. Overall, there were 872 instances of offensive language or 4.36 words spoken per hour. Of these, words classified as mild (words such as “hell” and “damn”) were the largest proportion (40.9%). While the seven dirty words were the least common form of offensive language, these supposedly banned words were still uttered on popular morning radio programs. The bulk of crude language was spoken on radio formats such as Rock and Popular that target a young audience. Additionally, the Northeast broadcasts featured significantly more instances of offensive language. viii CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION This dissertation reports the results of a content analysis of the five highest-rated radio stations in the top ten U.S. markets offering live streaming audio over the Internet. Organizations can use mass media outlets to change social conditions and encourage political and social intervention. When working with the media, advocates should ‘shape’ their story to incorporate social themes rather than solely focusing on individual accountability. “Develop a story that personalizes the injustice and then provide a clear picture of who is benefiting from the condition.” (Wallack et al., 1999) Merely stating that there is a problem provides no ‘call to action’ for the public. Therefore, advocates should identify a specific solution that would allow communities to take control of the issue. Sexual violence is a public health concern of social injustices. Effective Media Campaigns Local, regional or statewide campaigns can provide a forum for prevention, outreach and raising awareness to create social change. This toolkit will enhance advocates’ abilities to utilize the media for campaigns and other events. Campaigns can include: public service announcements (PSAs), awareness events (Take Back the Night; The Clothesline Project), media interviews, coordinated events at area schools or college campuses, position papers, etc.

Middletown, Connecticut May 2005 Text Sound Poetry I created several pieces using manipulated speech recordings, starting in the fall of 2003. After completing some of these pieces, I became aware of Text Sound Poetry as a well-defined genre involving similar passages between language and sound. To find out more about this genre, I listened to Other Mind’s re-release of 10 + 2: 12 American Text Sound Pieces, the re-released OU archives and Terre Thaemlitz’s album Interstices. Text Sound seems to be especially well suited to political expression. Often, a political work suffers a tension between the political/text content and the musical content. Either the political message or the music often must be sacrificed. However, in Text Sound, the text content is the musical content. Composers like Sten Hanson, Steve Reich and Terre Thaemlitz are able to create pieces where complaints about the Vietnam War, police brutality, and gender discrimination form the substance of the piece. To engage the piece is to engage the political content. Reich’s pieces are less obvious than Hanson and Thaemlitz. The loop process he uses in “Its Gonna Rain” is auditorially interesting, but the meaning of the piece is not immediately clear to a modern listener. Many discussions of his pieces eliminate the political content and focus on the process. Before I did research on this piece I was disturbed by the implications of a white composer taking the words of an African American and obscuring them until the content was lost to the process.

O‘Neil* During the waning days of the turbulent presidential campaign of 2012, the issue of free speech was bound to emerge. President Barack Obama chose this moment to declare to the United Nations General Assembly his abiding commitment to the uniquely American value of unfettered expression.1 In a diverse society, he reaffirmed, ―efforts to restrict speech can become a tool to silence critics, or oppress minorities.‖2 The catalyst for this declaration was the appearance of ―a crude and disgusting video‖3 caricaturing the Prophet Muhammad which had triggered violent protests in more than twenty nations, mainly in the Middle East.4 President Obama made clear both his disdain for the video and his unswerving faith in the singularly American insistence on free expression.5 Curiously (or some would say paradoxically) the Obama Administration only weeks earlier had actively supported passage of a resolution in the United Nations Human Rights Council to create an international standard restricting some anti-religious speech; the Egyptian ambassador to the United Nations had lauded this measure by recognizing that ―‗freedom of expression has been sometimes misused‘ to insult religion.‖6 Secretary of State Hilary Clinton had added her view that speech or protest resulting in the destruction of religious sites was not, she noted, ―fair game.‖7 In a recent and expansive analysis of these contrasting events, * University of Virginia and Association of Governing Boards, Albany Law Review Symposium, September, 2012.
