The Oblique Bridges in Italy
The Oblique Bridges in Italy Riccardo Gulli and Giovanni Mochi Rome, May 1851. Around a table were seated the delegates of five States: The Hungarian-Austrian Emperor, The Duke of Parma and Piacenza, The Duke of Modena, The Grand Duke of Tuscany and representatives of the Papal State. The objective: to reach an agreement for the realization of the first rail link between northern and central Italy, crossing the Alps. Until that time only 300km of railway existed in Italy; small sections, separated one from the other and designed to connect the capital cities to the main ports: Turin with Genoa, Milan with Florence and Florence with Livorno.The papal government was planning connections between Bologna – Ancona and Ancona – Rome, whilst in the south, after the pioneering work on the Napoli – Portici line (1839), all further activity had ceased. Railway system of the Italian States in 1848 (Berengo Gardin 1988) The agreement signed in Rome provided the opportunity to achieve a breakthrough in the isolation of the single states and the chance to link Rome and Florence with Vienna and Northern Europe. In the following fifteen years, up until the end of 1866, 4000km of railway line was constructed, and 1455 by 1876 so much as to reach a total expanse of 7780 km. Despite the great efforts over these years Italy was not however able to attain the level of infrastructure of other European states that, over the same period, had reached a greatly superior level of development in their railway networks (Towards the end of the 1870’s Germany had 29 000 km of line, France more than 22 000 km whilst the Austrian Hungarian Empire boasted of around 17 000 km of rail line). -

Present Mobility Situation City of Florence City of Florence Actual Mobility Context Information about the city. Florence is the capital city of the Italian region of Tuscany and of the province of Florence. It is the most populous city in Tuscany, with about 370.000 inhabitants Tourism is, by far, the most important of all industries and most of the Florentine economy relies on the money generated by international arrivals and students studying in the city. However, Florence is a major production and commercial centre in Italy, where industrial complexes in the suburbs produce all sorts of goods, rubber goods, chemicals, and food. Traditional and local products, such as antiques, handcrafts, jewelry, shoes, accessories and high fashion clothes also dominate a fair sector of Florence economy. The city income relies partially on services and commercial and cultural interests, such as annual fairs, festivals and fashion shows. Heavy industry and machinery also take their part in providing an income. Florence and its surroundings are the typical European metropolitan area characterized by a strong commuting with about 540,000 city users and about 370'000 residents. The City of Florence covers a relatively small area (just over 100 km 2) compared to a metropolitan area that includes 20 surrounding municipalities with about 970,000 residents. The mobility of the area is characterized by approximately 690,000 daily movements of which 480,000 in the morning . The characteristic of the mobility. PITECCIO • CASTAGNO • SAN MOMMÈ HISTORICAL PORRETTANA RAILWAY Start from the church square in the village of Piteccio (225 m.) and begin walking north on Via XXIV Maggio. A few dozen meters further on, after crossing the Fosso di Castagno, turn right in front of the pharmacy, going uphill following the red-and-white signs for the CAI 212 Capriolo Trail. The route climbs, passing under a majestic bridge (48 m. high) as far as an old railway building (Via di Castagno n. 6). (A short detour to the right is recommended to visit the Piteccio station, currently closed to passengers but the seat of the Gruppo Fermodellistico La Porrettana, or Porrettana Model Train Group). Then proceed uphill on the dirt road following the main path, lined in stretches by box hedges, and the red-and-white signs until passing near the paved road after about a half kilometer (343 m.). Continue uphill on the trail until reaching a roadside shrine where the itinerary continues to the left. However, first, a short detour to the left is necessary to visit the characteristic village of Castagno with its “open- air museum” and small railroad station. Leaving the village, return to the roadside shrine. From here the mule track continues downhill and crosses a wood dominated mainly by chestnut trees but also with elder, black locust, and heather. Next, the route continues on rather flat ground and comes to the small hamlet of Case Bruni (Via Valdi e San Mommè) and, after an evocative stroll among the houses, it continues downhill until reaching the paved Piteccio-San Mommè road.
