Hornblower's Ships
Names of Ships from the Hornblower Books. Introduction Hornblower’s biographer, C S Forester, wrote eleven books covering the most active and dramatic episodes of the life of his subject. In addition, he also wrote a Hornblower “Companion” and the so called three “lost” short stories. There were some years and activities in Hornblower’s life that were not written about before the biographer’s death and therefore not recorded. However, the books and stories that were published describe not only what Hornblower did and thought about his life and career but also mentioned in varying levels of detail the people and the ships that he encountered. Hornblower of course served on many ships but also fought with and against them, captured them, sank them or protected them besides just being aware of them. Of all the ships mentioned, a handful of them would have been highly significant for him. The Indefatigable was the ship on which Midshipman and then Acting Lieutenant Hornblower mostly learnt and developed his skills as a seaman and as a fighting man. This learning continued with his experiences on the Renown as a lieutenant. His first commands, apart from prizes taken, were on the Hotspur and the Atropos. Later as a full captain, he took the Lydia round the Horn to the Pacific coast of South America and his first and only captaincy of a ship of the line was on the Sutherland. He first flew his own flag on the Nonsuch and sailed to the Baltic on her. In later years his ships were smaller as befitted the nature of the tasks that fell to him. -

HMS ENDURANCE 1974/75 SEASON 52 Bags Despatched Total Weight 800 Lb
The Greenies continued to work on the computer snag. Only to find the test equipment they were using also suspect. However, the computer itself was changed and with the able assistance of Sam Sampson and Roger Wiltshire, who did all the mechanical linkage adjustments, while, I might add, the aircraft was "burning and turning". We would all like to think that that was it, but the aircraft still has it's moments when it just doesn't want to start properly. By Monday 13 Jan we had completed the somewhat rough crossing of Drakes passage, and had arrived off Nelson Island in the South Shetlands, where we flew both the aircraft to land yet another large survey camp party with all their various pieces of equipment. With weather permitting we continued our vertical photography work and as we were down the Gerlache Straits and the Bismark Straits, the aircraft were used to take members of the ship's company, who were keen enough, to take photographs of the scenic beauty. One of the odd occasions when the Flight weren't actually busy flying and when recreational leave was given, was when the ship had sailed into the Bay of Deception Island and dropped anchor. The keen photographers and sightseers were soon ashore there. The aircraft were also used when the Captain had to go ashore to visit the Russian and Chilian camps that are also on Nelson Island. The following day, Monday 20 Jan the aircraft were involved in a mercy mission flying our doctor Surgeon Lt "Donkey" Bray to USS HERO, a small vessel belonging to the American Survey people, which we had seen while visiting Palmer base. -

The Barrow News 24 January 1942 reported: BARROW ENGINEER TWICE TORPEDOED RESCUED AT DUNKIRK NOW PRESUMED KILLED A Barrow engineer in the Royal Navy who was rescued when his ship was sunk while bringing survivors from Dunkirk, E.R.A. William Davies (Davis on CWGC) Thompson, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, of 48, Plymouth-street, Walney, has now been reported missing presumed killed. He was serving on board H.M.S. Galatea which was recently announced to have been sunk after being torpedoed by a U-boat. Twenty-five years of age, he was educated at Ocean-road School and the Barrow Technical College. He served his apprenticeship at Messrs. Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd. and joined the Navy about three years ago. He was well known in local dancing and cycling circles. Wikipedia tells us: On 14 December 1941 before midnight Galatea (Captain E.W.B. Sim) was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-557 off Alexandria, Egypt. Captain Sim, 22 officers and 447 ratings were killed. Some 100 survivors were picked up by the destroyers Griffin and Hotspur. WESTWOOD nCHTING C1TTDC or WORLD World War II was the last of the great naval wars, the culmination of a century of warship development in which steam, steel and finally aviation had been adapted for naval use. The battles, both big and small, of this war are well known, and the names of some of the ships which fought them are still familiar, names like Bismarck, Warspite and Enterprise. This book presents these celebrated fighting ships, detailing both their war- time careers and their design features. In addition it describes the evolution between the wars of the various ship types : how their designers sought to make compromises to satisfy the require - ments of fighting qualities, sea -going capability, expense, and those of the different naval treaties. Thanks to the research of devoted ship enthusiasts, to the opening of government archives, and the publication of certain memoirs, it is now possible to evaluate World War II warships more perceptively and more accurately than in the first postwar decades. The reader will find, for example, how ships in wartime con- ditions did or did not justify the expecta- tions of their designers, admiralties and taxpayers (though their crews usually had a shrewd idea right from the start of the good and bad qualities of their ships). Moloney 2015 Abstract Investigation into underwater archaeology began, inevitably, with the investigation of shipwrecks. For decades whole divisions of our discipline have focused on studying the intricate characteristics and mechanisms involved in the propulsion, construction, and manipulation of ships themselves (e.g. nautical archaeology). However, as Mortimer Wheeler noted, “the archaeologist is digging up, not things, but people” (Wheeler 1954: 13), so how do we extract information about those crewing these ships from shipwrecks? In this study I examine the spatial organization of ships in an effort to reconstruct the social dynamics of shipboard society. -

EVENTS WE MAYBE SHOULD HAVE BEEN EXPECTING1 Let’s do some thinking about Thoreau’s accidents. Weren’t there an unusual number of accidents in this particular person’s life? As a toddler, in a backyard incident, he had chopped off his own right big toe with the help of the kindling hatchet. As a young man, he had helped a buddy set a fire in a stump to cook their fish, and the conflagration that resulted burned over an entire section of Concord’s woodlots. While living in his shanty on the pond, he badly strained his torso muscles in avoiding the kick of a horse. Then he waded out toward Clark’s Island in Boston Harbor and was almost caught and carried away as the tide came in; had he not been rescued by a passing fisherman in a rowboat, our guy would surely have drowned. Are there other occasions I haven’t taken into consideration? Over and above what was happening to him personally, there was what was going on around him. During his lifetime there was the wreck of an Irish immigrant vessel on the rocks off Cape Cod, described in CAPE COD, and there was the wreck of the vessel carrying Margaret Fuller in the surf of Fire Island, and there was the shattering explosion of a powder mill near Concord with blackened human body parts being pulled down from the branches of the surrounding trees, and there were the people riding near Concord, backwards atop the train, who got their brains batted out against a low bridge beam, and there was a fire aboard an excursion boat that destroyed the lives of several people he knew — and so on and so forth. -

Introduction This report is a description of the scientific work carried out aboard HMS Endurance for the Antarctic Research Group of Birmingham University during her first work period, 9th December 1976 to 7th January 1977. This ‘group is concerned with a geophysical and geochemical study of the earth's crust in the Scotia Sea region. The work undertaken this season involved two separate projects, these being:- (i) Recovery of an automatic seismograph established on South Thule island in January 1976 (ii) Magnetometer survey during -passages within the Scotia Sea including 2 grid surveys in the Central and East Scotia Sea. The seismograph was installed from HMS Endurance by Colin Brett, the group's seismologist, and designed to run automatically for 6 months recording the earthquake activity of the South Sandwich Island Arc. This data will supplement that obtained from our two other seiamograph stations, at South Georgia and Signy Island, to allow detailed study of the island- arc and the deep structure of the ocean crust to the west of it.
