ASCOT TO THE ARCTIC: EXPLORER JIM MCNEILL RECRUITS FOR POLAR SubmittedMISSION by: Ice Warrior Tuesday, 28 April 2015 One of the world’s most experienced and respected polar explorers, Ascot resident Jim McNeill, has received support for his next expedition in the form of £250,000 worth of digital advertising in premium locations across seven cities in the UK donated by Ocean Outdoor (http://www.oceanoutdoor.com). He is searching for intrepid volunteers to participate in a scientific trek to the Last Pole (http://www.lastpole.co.uk/) – the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility, which has never been reached before. Jim McNeill has spent over 35 years creating, advising and leading many expeditions in the world’s most extreme climates. In 2001 he founded the Ice Warrior Project, which aims to enable ‘ordinary’ people to experience the challenge of polar exploration and achieve extraordinary feats of endurance and endeavor while gaining an understanding of the changes affecting the Polar climate. Ice Warrior, which will run until 2020, has trained over 300 people in polar survival. Best known for his work in the polar regions, Jim has led many successful teams through high-risk polar expeditions and critical lifesaving situations where effective leadership and hands-on teamwork are paramount. This experience, along with Jim’s extensive safety and survival expertise, is employed by some of the world’s largest corporations including BBC TV, ITN, SKY and CNN and Hollywood film companies Marvel and Sony Paramount. In addition, Jim has been instrumental in many scientific experiments to measure the reality of polar climate change. -

Shackleton Dates AUGUST 8th 1914 The team leave the UK on the ship, Endurance. DEC 5th 1914 They arrive at the edge of the Antarctic pack ice, in the Weddell Sea. JAN 18th 1915 Endurance becomes frozen in the pack ice. OCT 27TH 1915 Endurance is crushed in the ice after drifting for 9 months. Ship is abandoned and crew start to live on the pack ice. NOV 1915 Endurance sinks; men start to set up a camp on the ice. DEC 1915 The pack ice drifts slowly north; Patience camp is set up. MARCH 23rd 2016 They see land for the first time – 139 days have passed; the land can’t be reached though. APRIL 9th 2016 The pack ice starts to crack so the crew take to the lifeboats. APRIL 15th 1916 The 3 crews arrive on ELEPHANT ISLAND where they set up camp. APRIL 24th 1916 5 members of the team, including Shackleton, leave in the lifeboat James Caird, on an 800 mile journey to South Georgia, for help. MAY 10TH 1916 The James Caird crew arrive in the south of South Georgia. MAY 19TH -20TH Shackleton, Crean and Worsley walk across South Georgis to the whaling station at Stromness. MAY 23RD 1916 All the men on Elephant Island are safe; Shackleton starts on his first attempt at a rescue from South Georgia but ice prevents him. AUGUST 25th Shackleton leaves on his 4th attempt, on the Chilian tug boat Yelcho; he arrives on Elephant Island on August 30th and rescues all his crew. MAY 1917 All return to England. -

Having celebrated Shackleton’s British Antarctic (Nimrod) Expedition, courtesy of the ‘Matrix Shackleton Centenary Expedition’, in 2008/9, we now turn our attention to the events of 1910/12. This was a period when 3 very extraordinary and ambitious men (Amundsen, Scott and Mawson) headed south, to a mixture of acclaim and tragedy. A little later (in 2014) we will be celebrating Sir Ernest’s ‘crowning glory’ –the Centenary of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic (Endurance) Expedition 1914/17. Shackleton failed in his main objective (to be the first to cross from one side of Antarctica to the other). He even failed to commence his land journey from the Weddell Sea coast to Ross Island. However, the rescue of his entire team from the ice and extreme cold (made possible by the remarkable voyage of the James Caird and the first crossing of South Georgia’s interior) was a remarkable feat and is the reason why most of us revere our polar hero and choose to be members of this Society. For all the alleged shenanigans between Scott and Shackleton, it would be a travesty if ‘Number Six’ failed to honour Captain Scott’s remarkable achievements - in particular, the important geographical and scientific work carried out on the Discovery and Terra Nova expeditions (1901-3 and 1910-12 respectively). -

In this research I define two classes of Antarctic memory-making. The first is composed of geographically located artefacts directly associated with New Zealand’s physical participation in South Pole exploration. The second class posits representational interpretations of Antarctica as sites of cultural “meaningfulness” to New Zealand’s identity. Both categories are defined chronologically by the Antarctic Treaty (1959), which sought to protect objects of “historical interest” from damage or destruction while prohibiting the addition of other permanent artefacts. I suggest that one unforeseen outcome of the Antarctic Treaty was the creation of two states of memory: one of authentic history dating from before 1959, and another of documentary history (requiring representational interpretation), which has occurred since that time. The best examples of the former are the rudimentary huts which remain from the so-called “heroic period” of Antarctic exploration. An excellent example of the latter is found in the Artists to Antarctica programme in which selected New Zealand artists—writers, visual artists and musicians—have the opportunity to visit and record their views of the region’s unique qualities. -

Shackleton decided to use three lifeboats (rowing boats) through treacherous seas to reach Elephant Island—a bleak, ice-covered rock. Shackleton took five crew members with him in a small lifeboat to reach South Georgia (900 miles away) where they knew there was a whaling station. When they reached South Georgia, they had to hike 30 miles, climbing a mountain and crossing glaciers to reach the whaling station. A ship was then able to rescue the remaining 22 men on Elephant Island. Shackleton failed in his attempt to cross Antarctica by foot, but he became a hero for leading one of the greatest and bravest rescues in history. During another Antarctic mission in 1921, Shackleton fell ill and suffered a fatal heart attack, he died at the age of 47. -

The Greenies continued to work on the computer snag. Only to find the test equipment they were using also suspect. However, the computer itself was changed and with the able assistance of Sam Sampson and Roger Wiltshire, who did all the mechanical linkage adjustments, while, I might add, the aircraft was "burning and turning". We would all like to think that that was it, but the aircraft still has it's moments when it just doesn't want to start properly. By Monday 13 Jan we had completed the somewhat rough crossing of Drakes passage, and had arrived off Nelson Island in the South Shetlands, where we flew both the aircraft to land yet another large survey camp party with all their various pieces of equipment. With weather permitting we continued our vertical photography work and as we were down the Gerlache Straits and the Bismark Straits, the aircraft were used to take members of the ship's company, who were keen enough, to take photographs of the scenic beauty. One of the odd occasions when the Flight weren't actually busy flying and when recreational leave was given, was when the ship had sailed into the Bay of Deception Island and dropped anchor. The keen photographers and sightseers were soon ashore there. The aircraft were also used when the Captain had to go ashore to visit the Russian and Chilian camps that are also on Nelson Island. The following day, Monday 20 Jan the aircraft were involved in a mercy mission flying our doctor Surgeon Lt "Donkey" Bray to USS HERO, a small vessel belonging to the American Survey people, which we had seen while visiting Palmer base. -

Dame Ellen MacArthur and the Royal Navy have joined forces with the University of Portsmouth to create an exciting and new educational partnership, which will be launched in time to support National Science and Engineering Week in March. Pupils will find their science lessons being brought to life by a series of easy to use downloadable worksheets that will allow them to build their own weather stations, create erupting volcanoes, and build and fly model albatrosses in the project named BIG FREEZE: SCIENCE FROM ANTARCTICA. Experienced in the oceanography, meteorology and climatology of Antarctica, the Royal Navy’s Ice Patrol Ship, HMS Endurance will be the focus of a series of National Curriculum supporting Key Stage 2 worksheets in partnership with the University of Portsmouth and supported by round-the-world yachtswoman, Dame Ellen MacArthur. Introduction This report is a description of the scientific work carried out aboard HMS Endurance for the Antarctic Research Group of Birmingham University during her first work period, 9th December 1976 to 7th January 1977. This ‘group is concerned with a geophysical and geochemical study of the earth's crust in the Scotia Sea region. The work undertaken this season involved two separate projects, these being:- (i) Recovery of an automatic seismograph established on South Thule island in January 1976 (ii) Magnetometer survey during -passages within the Scotia Sea including 2 grid surveys in the Central and East Scotia Sea. The seismograph was installed from HMS Endurance by Colin Brett, the group's seismologist, and designed to run automatically for 6 months recording the earthquake activity of the South Sandwich Island Arc. This data will supplement that obtained from our two other seiamograph stations, at South Georgia and Signy Island, to allow detailed study of the island- arc and the deep structure of the ocean crust to the west of it.
