Since its debut in 2006, the Wii has become one of the most popular game systems for players of all ages. Along with its rising popularity some doctors have suggested that the Wii could be used to help children develop hand-eye coordination and motor skills. A year ago Garnes and her 4-year-old sister received the Wii and have been playing non- stop ever since. While they haven’t noticed any difference in their athleticism, their parents have noticed small improvements in their throwing motion and coordination. Researchers have said that the Wii has really improved younger children’s hand-eye coordination and ability to count and pay attention, making Wii not only a popular video game, but a way to improve the minds and physical characteristics of children. “For bowling you get to practice on your arms. I do throw a little bit better than I used to,” 10-year-old Elizabeth Garnes of Atlanta said. The physical benefits of the Wii are not only reserved for everyday children playing it recreationally, but children in rehab are benefitting from it as well. For several months, students at the University of Toronto have been working to develop a “therapeutic video game” that could be used for children who suffer from hemiplegic cerebral palsy, a condition that partially paralyzes one side of the body. Wii has become an important model to their research. Researches for the University have developed a game for these children similar to the Wii. The kids are able to sit in a chair and press a button, but are required to use their weaker hand. By using the weaker hand they are able to strengthen that side of their body, and all from playing a video game. Doctors are also pleased that children are able to take this home with them and continue to practice, which decreases recovery time. 19 Photos by David Winter Wii Workout Ann Haley and Taylor Alford Wii Fit started out as a big hit. their fault for thinking it’s mean Not only are people con- This incredibly popular video because I play Wii Fit as much as I cerned about how Wii Fit deter- game motivated people to work can, and I eat a lot. I walked into , camera in hand, ready to experience the music of Citizen Cope in a performance with only the band’s lead singer, Clarence Greenwood. I had always heard how good Citizen Cope was but had never really listened to their music. As I took a seat with some friends, I noticed the whole audience was already antsy for Greenwood to take the stage. He finally made an appearance after an hour of faking all of us out with hundreds of song fade-outs. Greenwood eased the audience by playing soft, slow songs. Being the only one on stage, all the attention was drawn to the sound of his voice along with the plucking of his acoustic guitar. He swayed effortlessly as he serenaded us. Greenwood’s voice was affected by an illness, so in between songs, he took a spoonful of honey to soothe it. As the night went on, he started playing more upbeat songs that the crowd immediately recognized. Blue stage lights scanned over the audience’s illuminated faces. Everyone was so into the music. By the time the concert was over, I was his newest fan. -Claire Buyens

Grady High students had a great time showing their school spirit, and even though it was shortened this year because of a planning day. The Grady Grey Knights were not discouraged. “Homecoming was cool; everyone dressed out , but I thought the teachers could have been a little more involved,” junior Knight Kai Jackson said. “But everything was a success , including coronation and the homecoming game.” Although few teachers get involved such as Ms. Mercer (below), many teachers still appreciate the homecoming experience. “I was impressed by the school spirit that was displayed by both students and the faculty members”, math teacher, Christian Hagbe-Nguidjol said. With homecoming gone, now it’s time to focus on grades, but at least we can remember the good times, and can look forward to next year.

Budding fashion designers have lots of questions on how to get started. That’s why Atlanta Fashion Incubators (AFI) set up a round- table panel discussion on the fash- ion industry in Atlanta, featuring local designers such as Mark Edge, Melissa Tabor, Viviana Cambell, Carla Daniels and Greg Robinson. Set on the rooftop of the Georgia Commerce Center, with a beautiful view of Centennial Park, and tickets at $25 for the general public, it fea- tured a heated discussion. It started off with each designer describing what they do and how they got started. Once they were finished, a member of the audience each got a chance to ask a question, directed to one of the designers or to all of them. -Story and photos by Payton Fritch

Zoica Matei (left) is a budding fash- ion designer from Romania. Her love of fashion as a teenager inspired her to eventually create her own cloth- ing line. At 13 years old, her admi- ration of Georgio Armani and help from her mother enabled her create her first dress. Now Matei is ready to make her mark in the fashion world. Her line is geared to middle-aged women, but she tries to be open with her styles and fashions. “It is al- ways inspiring and refreshing to see new designers,” Matei said. She feels teenagers now have so many op- tions for pursuing careers in fashion. “Places such as SCAD and AIU were not available when I was beginning,” she added. When asked if she was at- tending z Urban Couture Show this year, she said it was a definite yes.. -Erin Johnson

An Event to Die For On a cool Saturday afternoon I found myself impatiently wait- ing behind a crowd of anxious children and irritable parents for one the best Halloween Parades of the season. Faces were glowing with smiles and kids were jump- ing around in hopes of getting handfuls of candy. The beats of the drums from the Grady High School marching band filled the air as peo- ple stood on their tippy toes to see what was coming. The floats, spon- soring stores inside and out of Little Five Points, began to bombard the streets. Impersonators of Sarah Pa- lin and Barack Obama joined in the fun. Characters from spooky movies terrified the crowd, and there were faces with dripping blood from Creepers Haunted House, and skeletons roamed the streets. The eventually came to an end, but the fun contin- ued. Costume contests were held for anyone and everyone who wanted to compete. By the time it was dark, the night was young for some, and bands took the outside stage to perform some of their favorite songs. Since this year was a huge success, next year is sure to be another non-stop day of terrify- ing fun. Photos and story by Paula Harding
