Throughout the education, we subsequently became interested in the subject of development of land and cities. As both of us are internationally oriented, we saw the possibility to deepen our knowledge by focusing on an international matter in our master thesis. We are grateful to SIDA for providing the economic grant that made this research and the journey to India possible. We would also like to thank our supervisor Stefan Olander, Associate Professor at the Division of Construction Management, Lund University, for giving valuable support and advice throughout the course of research. The time spent in Dharavi, Mumbai during our case study has been very intense and at times difficult, but foremost interesting and rewarding. We have obtained many significant experiences, which we would not have been able to gain from a desk in Sweden. Hence the development of slums is increasingly becoming a rising problem. Consequently, the need to acknowledge the issue and to find sufficient solutions has enlarged. The informal settlement of Dharavi is facing a redevelopment and it is of importance to survey and analyse the current situation. Dharavi consists of an area that represents many informal settlements and its development is at present at an interesting stage, suitable for this research. By studying Dharavi useful information can be obtained and later applied to other areas and future redevelopment projects. There is an apparent lack of documented knowledge regarding the impact of slum redevelopment. In particular, this shortcoming concerns informal housing markets. The main purpose of this research was to acquire knowledge regarding the process of property development in informal settlements and to identify how such development would affect existing housing and rental markets. The purpose was fulfilled by conducting a case study and a complementary literature study. During the case study, information was mainly gathered through qualitative open-ended interviews with Dharavi inhabitants as well as local field experts. It has been found that a number of aspects regarding informal communities are affected upon redevelopment. Some of the most substantial changes concern the informal housing market, where juridical and financial changes are to be expected. Consequently, there are some positive as well as negative outcomes of such redevelopment. The major positive outcomes are improved housing standards and the creation of a healthier environment.     The 7 Islands of Bombay/Mumbai Bombay, now Mumbai, more correctly Greater Mumbai, started out as seven small islands with villages of Kolis, the local indigenous people of this part of Western India. Their main means of living was from fishing and their goddess was Mumba Devi from which modern Bombay was finally renamed Mumbai. Greater Mumbai includes the northern large island of Salsette or Vasai which remained a Portuguese territory for a longer time whilst the seven islands became English regions after 1661. Some of the most ambitious reclamation ever undertaken in Asia involved not just joining these islands, but reclaming huge parts of sea separating the islands as well as vast empty tracts of water in between. These were seven islands when the Portuguese ceded these to the British as 'dowry' for the marraige of the English King Charles II to Catharine of Braganza of Portugal, in 1661. For a very interesting history of Mumbai see this site: http://theory.tifr.res.in/bombay/history/ that traces the history of this region from the Stone Age, through the Magadha Empire, to the Muslims of Gujarat to the Portuguese and the British, and finally the capital of commercial India. There is some controvery on the origin of the word Mumbai-it is now claimed the word Mumbai is derived from the word for the local diety of the region, a goddess called Mumbadevi. The Portugeuse who first claimed posession of the seven islands called these Bom Baie, meaning Good Bay, and the city was called Bombay upto the early 70's, when the name was changed to Mumbai.

The city of Mumbai is undergoing a complex social, economic, and political transition into an increasingly fragmentary and polarized metropolitan space. The tortuous flow of water through contemporary Mumbai presents one of the most striking indicators of persistent social inequalities within the postcolonial metropolis. We find that the city's dysfunctional water infrastructure has its roots within the colonial era but these incipient weaknesses have been exacerbated in recent years by rapid urban growth, authoritarian forms of political mobilization, and the dominance of middle-class interests within a denuded public realm. It is argued that the water and sanitation crisis facing Mumbai needs to be understood in relation to the particularities of capitalist urbanization and state formation in an Indian context. Hannah Marsden 6th July 2018 2 Abstract This thesis is an ethnographic and historical investigation into the roles and meanings of Western classical music Mumbai and Goa, India. My core argument is that the values and ideologies held by those involved in Western classical musicking in Mumbai do not always correspond with local values and ideologies prevalent in the city. Tensions are thus created, as a transnational music historically rooted in European high art cultures meets local values in a post- colonial site. Chapters one and two present a historical account of Western classical music in Mumbai. Drawing on extensive archival research as well as on oral histories, I outline how Western classical music was established in the city, and what it meant to the communities involved in it. The rest of the thesis is based on ethnographic fieldwork undertaken in Mumbai in 2014 and 2015. In chapter three I take three case studies, a local music competition, an amateur orchestra and a Catholic choir, to explore various ways in which Western classical music can be employed as signifier of, and can participate in the construction of, multi-layered and nuanced identities. I show how practitioners of Western classical music in Mumbai are subject to questioning from within the locale and from international audiences regarding their identities as Indian Western classical musicians.

    Mumbai: The Hub of Indian Cinema 1. Introduction Maharashtra, the entertainment colossus of India is a major contributor to the Indian film industry in terms of number of films produced and released. Apart from the commercial feat as the biggest trade and commerce center in the country, Mumbai is also home to Bollywood film industry. Over 70% of Indian motion pictures, television serials and commercials are produced in Mumbai itself. The term Bollywood is imbibed from the merger of the term Bombay (now Mumbai) and Hollywood, depicting the significance of the city on its film industry. Concentration of production houses and presence of film fraternity has resulted in the influx of talent from across the country resulting in the creation of jobs and economic growth. 2. History of Mumbai Film Industry Mumbai is the birthplace of the Indian film industry which came into existence after the first film screening at Watson Hotel, Mumbai, back in 1896. Lumiere Brothers were the first to introduce cinematography to India by showcasing six short films at Watson Hotel, Mumbai. It was in 1913 when the first silent feature film of India Raja Harishchandra was made by Dadasaheb Phalke and by 1930 film industry started producing more than 200 films every year. It was in 1931 when the first Indian sound film Alam Ara was, produced by Ardeshir Irani while in 1950s, the first color films of the Bollywood were released. Another milestone was scaled by Mumbai city on 26th September 1977, Maharashtra Film, Stage & Cultural Development Corporation Ltd. alias Filmcity was established by the Department of Cultural Affairs Government of Maharashtra.

A tiny speck appears in a cloudless Poona sky, moving steadily toward the Tower of Silence, the funerary place where the Zoroastrians expose their dead to be consumed by birds of prey. It is not an eagle; nor is it a crow, for it could never fly that high. As the speck approaches the tower, its outline grows larger. It is a small aircraft, its silver body gleaming in the bright sun. After flying high above the Parsi place of the dead, the plane dis- appears into the horizon only to double back. This time, it heads determinedly to the tower, hovers low over it, and then suddenly swoops down recklessly. Just when it seems sure to plunge into the ground, the plane rights itself and flies upside down in large circles. A bright object drops from the aircraft into the well of the tower, illuminating the structure containing a heap of skeletons and dead bodies. As the light from the bright flare reveals this gruesome sight, the plane suddenly rights itself and hovers directly overhead. The clock strikes two. A camera shutter clicks. The click of the camera shakes the Zoroastrian world. The Parsi head priest of the Deccan region, taking an afternoon nap, imme- diately senses that foreign eyes have violated the sacred universe of his religion. Physical Description Mumbai stakes its claim as the biggest metropolitan city in India in terms of population size and economy it generates. Located in the western coast facing the Arabian Sea (Figure 1), the city, which serves as an important seaport and trade hub, is also the financial nerve-centre of the country. This capital city of the state of Maharashtra was once made up of seven small islands, which over the centuries got connected through natural and man-made land reclamations. Mumbai City is the core of the old port city of Mumbai during the colonial period. Since then, its territory has expanded northward to cover the suburbs and extended suburbs.
