  • Using the Nintendo Wii ® to Teach Human Factors Principles
AC 2009-1414: USING THE NINTENDO WII ® TO TEACH HUMAN FACTORS PRINCIPLES Lesley Strawderman, Mississippi State University Lesley Strawderman is an assistant professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. She conducts research in the area of human factors and ergonomics, specifically looking at the impact of large scale service systems on human use. She has received her IE degrees from Penn State and Kansas State Universities. Page 14.1334.1 Page © American Society for Engineering Education, 2009 Using the Nintendo Wii ® to teach Human Factors Principles Abstract This paper describes how to use of the Nintendo Wii® game console to teach students a variety of human factors principles. First, the concept of Signal Detection Theory (SDT) is explained using a personalized searching game on the Wii®. Next, an activity involving human sensory systems is discussed. Finally, a learning module that addresses control design and feedback, focusing on the game’s controller (Wii Remote or Wiimote) is presented. Potential topic areas for future activities, including human computer interaction, are also discussed. The teaching activities described in this paper have been successfully used by the author in past semesters. A sampling of student feedback is provided in the paper. Finally, a discussion of how the activities could be extended to non-human factors courses and outreach activities is presented. Introduction The Nintendo Wii is a popular video game console that allows the player to interact with the games in many new ways. The focus of the Wii gaming system is its controller, called a Wii Remote. The wireless device functions much like a remote control, but has motion detecting technology that allows players to interact with the Wii games using motions.

A Wii Fit Experiment An Honors Thesis (HONRS 499) by Kirk Barrios Ball State University Muncie, Indiana April 2009 Graduation May 2009 Tnh €r L.T' ,..,,, -I Abstract .ZLJ ~c q . t3~ Just within my five years at Ball State, technology has become more and more interactive as people become gripped to their computers, cell phones, and televisions. I've always had an interested in the overall effects on a person's well-being as a result of interactive technology. The Wii Fit is a unique piece of interactive technology because it pledges to provide positive health benefits to its users. I conducted a three month experiment on whether or not the Wii Fit actually promoted good physical health with regular use. I blogged regularly about my experience and made a video-review of the device which is enclosed in DVD format in this portfolio. I have also included the script for my DVD as well as transcripts of my blog entries, which can also be read online at http://wiifitnesschallenge.blogspot.com/ Acknowledgements I would like to thank John Dailey for advising me for this project as well as providing great insight into the ever changing world of interactive technology. I would also like to thank the Digital Media and Telecommunications department for years of instruction in the field of interactive technology and constantly being at the forefront of new and upcoming technical advancements. Script: Critical Review Wii Fit Hi, my name is Kirk Barrios, and this is my Senior H nors The is project, which is a critical review fthe Wii Fit.

  • Universal Game Controller
Universal Game Controller By Evan Lee Neil Singh Charles Van Fossan Final Report for ECE 445, Senior Design Spring 2017 TA: Eric Clark May 2017 Group 48 Abstract For any avid gamer, having multiple systems are a must, but the expense of having multiple controllers for each might create upkeep costs and clutter issues. Our Universal Gaming Controller addresses this problem by connecting to a Bluetooth console dongle that is able to connect to different types of consoles. By having a single controller that could work on multiple systems, the cost of being able to utilize the console the way it is supposed to be greatly diminishes. Our controllers should not exceed the cost of a normal commercial controller and the various dongles should be as inexpensive as possible so that buying new dongles does not have a large financial impact on the consumer. This way, consumers do not need to worry as much about the cost of getting the maximum amount of controllers for their consoles. 2 Contents 1 Introduction ................................................................................................................................................ 4 1.1 Objective ............................................................................................................................................. 4 1.2 Our Solution ........................................................................................................................................ 4 1.2 High Level Requirements ..................................................................................................................
