DID YOU KNOW…. ADULT LITERACIES IN FALKIRK

Did you know that over 1 in 4 adults in Scotland have difficulty with some tasks involving reading, writing and numbers? That means over 40,000 people in Falkirk alone!

We have a variety of classes working with learners on all aspects of core skills including budgeting, spelling, creative writing, interview skills etc. The classes are free and run by tutors and volunteers in centres all over the Falkirk area.

The tutors and volunteers work with learners either in small groups or one to one within a group setting.

Why do learners come to adult literacy & numeracy classes?

The reasons that people attend our classes are as varied and numerous as the people themselves, whether it’s to help their child with their homework, to sit an aptitude or trades test as part of a job interview or for a promotion, or even to be able to read a paper or fill out a form, we will support you to improve your skills and opportunities whether in your family, working, community or personal life.

How can you take part?

All of the classes are friendly, welcoming and open to all adults. If you are interested in finding out more then call in to your local community centre or project, call the Big Plus on 0800 9178000 or call 01324 504450 to organise an informal chat to find out what you’re interested in working on, and when there are classes to suit you.

Would you like to Volunteer? If you’re interested in volunteering within any of our provision, and you have good basic skills, lots of patience and a good sense of humour, then sign up to be informed of the details of our next training course on 01324 504450

WELFARE REFORM

Major changes to Welfare state benefits are being made by the UK Government over the next few years. There are changes to how people claim benefits, what they are called, what they're eligible for and how they are paid. These changes will impact on a lot of people who live in the Falkirk Council area.

Most claims will be submitted and managed online. If you don’t have internet access at home or are not confident using a computer, you can get help at your local community centre.

• We can provide free access to computers • We can help you develop your basic IT skills so that you can set up and manage an e-mail or Universal Credit account, build a CV and look for work

The benefit changes may mean that you need to manage a smaller household budget on a monthly basis. If this is worrying you, talk to your local Community Learning & Development Worker. We can offer budgeting tools and other forms of support and advice or direct you to someone who can help if you’re having money problems. We also run courses that focus on things like cooking on a budget or other ways of making your money stretch a bit more.

For more information about free access to computers, IT classes, help with CVs or job searches, managing your budget or cooking on a budget, please get in touch. See Section 9 ‘About Community Learning & Development to find your nearest Community Learning Centre.

HOMELESS NOT HELPLESS By Caitlyn Taylor and Connor Clydesdale

We attended the Youth Scotland Stage 2 Involvement Training earlier this year and heard about a youth group raising money for homelessness in north of Scotland. We wanted to find out if homelessness was an issue in Falkirk.

We met with Campbell from the Salvation Army and the workers from the Y People and found out that it is a problem for this area but that the statistics didn’t show the real problem as people who ‘sofa hop’ don’t show up as homeless.

We organised a sleep out on the 22 nd July 2013 to raise money for the soup kitchen in Falkirk. It costs roughly £50 a day to feed all the people, we raised £200.28 so we helped support the kitchen for 4 days. On the night we were supported by CLD workers. We also had a visit from Axis sharing about drug and alcohol abuse support schemes in Falkirk.
