The mission is to inspire and facilitate the use of space technology, systems and know-how for future energy application. Thales Alenia Space is the main Italian space industry, it is present in Italy with important industrial production sites in both the regions Lazio and Piemonte. It is the joining link of an economic innovative model, the Space Economy model. The Space Economy model represent the space value chain that starts from the R&D, goes to the realization of the space infrastructure and reaches till satellite innovative products generation and services (i.e. telecommunication, navigation, positioning and environmental monitoring and services .etc). The workshop will present the space assets and technologies along with possible down- stream applications customized for Kazakhstan, such as Earth Observation monitoring of strategic infrastructures such as electric grid, natural resource management. The possibilities to cope the telecommunication capabilities of KazSat2 and KazSat3 with the one of KazEOSat-1 (DZZ-HR) and KazEOSat-2 (DZZ-MR) and enhance them with COSMO-SkyMed ones. Finally, going beyond our planet, the possibility to adapt space exploration technologies in non-space sectors such as fuel cell for the generation of energy in the space.

The last few months have been a busy time with lots of activity within the company. I am pleased to share that SmartSat has just appointed a high calibre independent Board to provide critical guidance in this nation-building CRC. The skills based, fully independent Board is comprised of Dr Peter Woodgate as Chair, Dr Michele Allan, Mrs Julie Cooper, Dr Jacqueline Craig FTSE, Adjunct Professor Michael Davis AO, Dr Rosalind Dubs, Professor Margaret Harding and myself. The founding Chair Dr Peter Woodgate highlighted the importance of gender equity and an independent, skills-based Board drawn from across Australia, stating “the founding partners of SmartSat carefully guided the appointment process and expressed strong support for their new Board”. I look forward to working with this dynamic Board Chaired by Dr Peter Woodgate who is highly experienced and knowledgeable in the space and spatial domain and together we will make a big contribution to Australia’s space economy and global competitiveness. The first meeting of the Board was held on Thursday 19th December and I am pleased to announce that they have approved the first five joint projects to be developed in the next 12 to 18 months. Three of the five approved projects develop different aspects of coherent free space optical communications.
