A three-tiered planning process is in place to ensure that the Division achieves its mission. ::s miss:'. brJa~ obj2ct1ves and strategies. it also ciesc':ces tne a ..-' :; ::--:e fo:Jr Key Science s!:-a!sgies ar:d :nc!icaturs :,f s~ccess cf the p;-cjects that support these themes. In addition to preparing a five year Strategic Plan, the Division is committed to a formal trienniai evaiuation of its performance and to a review of CALM's research priorities. As part of this triennial evaluation and planning process, the Division will report on its activities and outcomes over the last three years and, in consultation with CALM's primary program managers, regional and district staff, revise its operations to reflect changing priorities. Such a review was last undertaken in 1998 and gave nse to the 1998-2001 Operations Plan. Nicola Georgina Bergh Town Thesis presented for theCape Degree of DOCTOR OF ofPHILOSOPHY in the Department of Botany UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN University May 2009 Town Cape of University ii ABSTRACT The Greater Cape Floristic Region (GCFR) houses a flora unique for its diversity and high endemicity. A large amount of the diversity is housed in just a few lineages, presumed to have radiated in the region. For many of these lineages there is no robust phylogenetic hypothesis of relationships, and few Cape plants have been examined for the spatial distribution of their population genetic variation. Such studies are especially relevant for the Cape where high rates of species diversification and the ongoing maintenance of species proliferation is hypothesised. Subtribe Relhaniinae of the daisy tribe Gnaphalieae is one such little-studied lineage. The taxonomic circumscription of this subtribe, the biogeography of its early diversification and its relationships to other members of the Gnaphalieae are elucidated by means of a dated phylogenetic hypothesis. Molecular DNA sequence data from both chloroplast and nuclear genomes are used to reconstruct evolutionary history using parsimony and Bayesian tools for phylogeny estimation.

Australia Motocross champ hits shire road block Roger Simms A 2.4km motocross training track built without approval on farmland in Wattening is now in limbo and may have to be closed down or removed following a decision by the Toodyay Shire Council. The dirt track, with banks, turns and jump points, covers an area 450m by 250m on an 818-acre property in Bull Road near the border of the Toodyay and Victoria Plains shires, about 4km south of Bolgart. Steve Walsh and Karene Quinn applied for retrospective approval of the track which is used by Mr Walsh’s son Darren, a state motocross champion. The track has drawn strong community opposition over concerns about noise and dust pollution and possible contamination of a water source. Landowners, the Water Corporation, the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and The Victoria Plains Shire all opposed the application in submissions to the council or urged more checks, especially about water. The recommendation to council at last week’s meeting, however, was that the application be approved. Planning officer Hugo de Vos said in his report that a thorough examination of the proposal made it difficult to justify refusal. Many of the concerns raised were related to potential future development, which went beyond the scope of the application.

Although I anticipate producing a publishable version of this classification at a future date, my near- term goal is to produce a web-accessible version, which will be available to the public and which will be updated regularly through input from systematists familiar with taxa within the Lamiales. Zjhra, and others [estimated # species in Lamiales = 22,000] The goal of this project is to produce a working infraordinal classification of the Lamiales to genus with information on distribution and species richness. All recognized taxa will be clades; adherence to Linnaean ranks is optional. Synonymy is very incomplete (comprehensive synonymy is not a goal of the project, but could be incorporated). Although I anticipate producing a publishable version of this classification at a future date, my near-term goal is to produce a web-accessible version, which will be available to the public and which will be updated regularly through input from systematists familiar with taxa within the Lamiales. Between 2006 and 2015 I led the Western Australian Herbarium, with responsibility for day-to-day management, strategic planning, mentoring and capacity building for 22 science, IT and technical staff. During my tenure the Herbarium, located as it is in one of the world’s significant biodiversity hotspots, grew in status to become one of Australia’s most productive and respected herbaria. As Chair of the Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria (2012–2014) I was responsible for facilitating and coordinating programs, policies and activities across the Australasian herbarium collections community, including building and negotiating relationships with national programs such as the Atlas of Living Australia (ALA). I engage at a high level with state, national and international bodies relevant to systematics, taxonomy, nomenclature and biodiversity informatics. Biodiversity informatics and eTaxonomy.
