Trod wi a trod thru different paths, yuh understand?” —Bongo Future, falando sobre um outro ancião Rastafari * “If yuh are a big tree wi are a small axe” —Ditado popular jamaicano —RESUMO— Esta tese é uma etnografia dos modos de diferenciação mobilizados por Rastas em Kingston, Jamaica. Não se trata apenas de pensar em como Rastas se diferenciam de não-Rastas, mas também, e especialmente, como Rastas se diferenciam de outros Rastas. O foco está voltado para os modos como diferentes pessoas e coletivos Rastafari em Kingston e seus arredores articulam conceitos e práticas relacionados ao tropo do Retorno à África – ou Repatriação –; como narram e mobilizam histórias sobre o passado e o futuro na Jamaica e na África e como fazem diferentes usos e reflexões sobre os usos da ganja. A abordagem destes temas sob o viés dos modos de diferenciação dialoga com um dos objetivos centrais desta tese: criticar a ideia recorrente na literatura sobre o Rastafari jamaicano que postula a existência de um núcleo comum de crenças ou princípios subjacente às variações pragmáticas. Como conclusões eu afirmo que as parte percebidas por pesquisadores como pertencentes a um núcleo comum – aquilo que se reivindica como raízes africanas, a vontade de Repatriação, a divindade de Haile Selassie I e, certamente, o uso da ganja – são pensadas e mobilizadas de modos diferentes de acordo com as motivações políticas e afetivas de cada pessoa ou coletivo Rastafari. Além disso, eu mobilizo a ideia de que os dissensos semióticos e políticos entre Rastas não são características negativas ou prejudiciais ao Movimento Rastafari. São justamente estes dissensos que lhe dão vida e estimulam diálogos constantes entre o presente, o passado e o futuro, fazendo de seu repertório simbólico não um arquivo estático, mas sim um arquivo generativo que, ao ser acionado, alimenta as dinâmicas reflexivas de transformação do Movimento. Palavras-chave: Rastafari; Kingston; Diferenciação; Política; Poética; Dissenso. —ABSTRACT— This dissertation is an ethnography of the modes of differentiation mobilized by Rastas in Kingston, Jamaica. I am not interested only in how Rastas differentiate from non-Rastas, but also, and especially, in how Rastas differentiate from other Rastas. The focus is on the modes through which different Rastafari individuals and collectives in and around Kingston articulate concepts and practices related to the trope of the Return to Africa – or Repatriation –; how they tell and mobilize stories about the past and the future in Jamaica and Africa and how they make different uses and incur in different reflections on the uses of ganja. The approach to these themes through a perspective which emphasizes the modes of differentiation dialogues with one of the main objectives of this dissertation, which is to mobilize a critique to the recurrent idea present in the literature on the Jamaican Rastafari that postulates the existence of a common core of beliefs or principles underlying its pragmatic variations. As a conclusion, I assert that the parts perceived by researchers as belonging to a common core – what is claimed as African roots, the will for Repatriation, the divinity of Haile Selassie I, and certainly the uses of ganja – are thought of and mobilized in different modes according to the political and affective motivations of each Rastafari person or collective. Furthermore, I mobilize the idea that the semiotic and political dissents between Rastas are not negative or detrimental to the Rastafari Movement. It is precisely these dissents that give life to the Movement and stimulate constant dialogues between the present, the past and the future, making its symbolic repertoire not a static archive, but a generative archive which, when activated, feeds the reflexive dynamics of transformation of the Movement. After arriving in Paris, he worked for three months in order to be able to continue on his way to Spain and Morocco. From there, he set off towards the east. He crossed Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt on foot, went beyond the Aswan dam and over the desert to reach Sudan, where he got arrested by the authorities, because he did not have a visa. He spent three months in prison until the Ethiopian Ambassador in Khartoum heard about the Rastafari who wanted to go to Addis Ababa on foot and authorized him to enter Ethiopia.

Drawing increasingly upon digital technologies and the internet to assert a sense of community even as they cultivate an austere biblical persona, adher- ents of Rastafari can be thought of as simultaneously modern and antique. Their claim to antiquity is grounded in a collectively professed African- Ethiopian identity that has not only resisted the ravages of enslavement, colonialism, and European cultural domination but is seen to transcend local differences of culture and language. Theirs is a way of life organized around theocratic principles that begin with a recognition of the divine in all peoples and as the basis of all human agency. Rastafari assert the universal relevance of these principles to the conditions of modernity even as they persistently claim social justice on behalf of all peoples of African descent exploited by colonialism and the prevailing global capitalist-imperialist system. Based on these general themes, the Rastafari movement has come to represent a large-scale cultural phenomenon that has long since burst the chains of its colonial containment in Jamaica. From the late 1960s onward it has spread throughout the Caribbean and the Central and South American rimland to the major metropoles of North America and Europe as well as to many sites on the African continent.

    New Contree, No. 71, December 2014 The appearance and significance of Rastafari cultural aspects in South Africa Midas Chawane Department of Historical Studies University of Johannesburg [email protected] Abstract This article explores the presence and importance of Rastafari cultural features in South Africa. These cultural aspects include symbols and language that have become popular in South Africa from 1997 when the movement was formalised.1 The symbols include religious signifiers employed in Rastafarianism such as the colours of Marcus Garvey, which are displayed in the attires worn by both Rastafarians and non-Rastafarians. While practices of symbolic investment include the growing of dreadlocks, and the use of “ganja” (marijuana) as a sacrament – these practices are frequently distilled into visual signifiers such as equating dreadlocked person with a lion and a “ganja” sign that appears on T-shirts and car stickers. Rastafarians have also coined a new language (“iry talk or dread language”) as their means of communication. In the wake of the democratic transition in 1994, both the language and symbols of the Rastafarian movement have gained increasing popularity in South Africa. By analysing specific examples of symbolic practice and visual signification within a historical framework, the article explores the meanings of Rastafarian language and symbolism for post-apartheid South Africa.     1 1 Mapping Caribbean Cyberfeminisms Tonya Haynes Caribbean cyberfeminisms are diverse, heterogeneous, and polyvocal. Net- works may be simultaneously national, regional, global, transnational, and dias- poric.Through practices of media creation, curating, (re)blogging, (re)tweeting, sharing, and commenting across multiple social media platforms, Caribbean fem- inist knit together an online community that is often linked to on-the-ground or- ganizing and action. Online feminist practices are therefore rich archives for the study of Caribbean feminisms. To date, scholarly work on women’s and feminist movements in the region has failed to document and analyze these practices and sites of activism. Similarly, Caribbean feminist critiques of technology and new me- dia are not well developed.The essay attends to this gap by offering a partial and preliminary mapping Caribbean cyberfeminisms primarily through documentation and analysis of Caribbean feminist blogs. The murder of Japanese pannist Asami Nagakiya at Trinidad and Tobago’s carni- val generated international headlines.The mayor of Port of Spain, Raymond Tim Kee, seemed to blame Nagakiya for her own death, couching the violence against her as a result of “vulgarity and lewdness in conduct,” underscoring that “women have a respon- sibility to ensure they are not abused.”1 Trinidadian women (and men) assembled outside City Hall to demand the mayor’s resignation.They also shifted the public conversation on gender-based violence away from what they deemed “victim-blaming” and “slut- shaming” toward one of state accountability and respect for women’s autonomy and bodily integrity. Opened in San Francisco in December of 2005, the museum is literally positioned between archives. Located near Union Square, the museum stands across the street from the Cali- fornia Historical Society, and a few doors down from, the San Francisco Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender (GLBT) Archives. Each one of these institutions holds pieces of Black history, but there is no single structure that houses a satisfactory story.     Leaving Out of Babylon, Into Whose Father’s Land? The Ethiopian Perception of the Repatriated Rastafari By Erin Christine MacLeod Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the PhD in Communications McGill University 2009 2 Abstract This project is the first to investigate the way in which Ethiopians view the Rastafari, a post-colonial religious faith. Since originating in Jamaica in the 1930s, Rastafari have moved to the East African country to settle, viewing the country as the Promised Land. Given this centrality of Ethiopia to Rastafari, my dissertation documents the perception of Rastafari and Rastafarians within Ethiopia and the role these immigrants play within Ethiopian society. The methodology used is that of thick description—making an attempt to engage with as many different narratives about the Rastafari as possible. Thick description allows for an understanding of what is happening as regards the interaction between Rastafari and Ethiopians, but also provides a sense of context and meaning. After extensive interviewing in the Ethiopian cities of Shashemene and Addis Ababa, a comprehensive review of Ethiopian media coverage as well as analyses of academic, religious and government documents, the multiplicity of perspectives found demonstrated a view of a unique immigrant community, as well as a multifaceted view of Ethiopia and Ethiopianness. I draw from the many narratives about the Rastafari a sense of what these narratives can inform relative to Ethiopian identity itself. Unlike traditional development workers who stay on average two years, Rastafari wish to settle in Ethiopia. The challenge, therefore, to Ethiopians is to find a way to legally recognize these immigrants within the already complex historical and social spectrum of Ethiopian identity.
