jazzweek.com • April 10, 2006 JazzWeek 9 Industry Q&A: Matt Abramovitz Sirius Radio Format Manager and On-Air Personality

n our second of a series talking with jazz folk in the new media/ technology area – the first being Frank Johnson – we chat with ISirius Radio’s Matt Abramovitz. Since its arrival in early 2002, Sirius Satellite Radio has entered the jazz fray with a smooth jazz channel (Jazz Café), a straight-ahead channel (Pure Jazz), a modern jazz channel (Contemporary Jazz) and a standards channel (Standard Time). Named one of the 25 most important people in jazz by Jazz- Times magazine, Matt talks about life at Sirius and the audience spillover between jazz and shock jock Howard Stern. – Tad Hendrickson

JazzWeek: What’s going on? Matt Abramovitz: Cleaning up from the week- end. And you know, trying to get more Jackie McLean music on the air right now. Do you often try and do that, respond to what’s going on in the news and jump on it? Absolutely. Part of what we do is reflect what is happening in the jazz world, and when some- thing of that magnitude happens, we want to make sure it’s on the air as soon as possible. For those to who don’t use satellite radio, can you explain how it works? It’s a little like cable: you get a special unit that will receive the signal; you pay a month- ly fee. Through that box on top of your stereo, computer or car radio, you get channels you wouldn’t otherwise have before. Is the technology finished? There is always ways of adding new features.

I was a freelance producer there for while and a writer. I worked on Jazz Pro- files and Jazz Set. Any memories from those days? The most vivid one is when Branford was still the host and Kenny Kirkland had just passed away. Branford was doing a phoner about Kenny and Branford was on doing something like reverse sit-ups while he was on the phone. I still remember what he said about Kenny: “Everyone has demons, but Kenny let his demons get him.” That’s a little different than working with Bruce Lundvall. I just don’t see him doing push-ups as he talks. We’ve had a great time working together. I’ve been very lucky here at Sirius, between all the guest DJ stuff and working every week with , who has a regular show here and has been incredibly educational for me. Bruce has been a thrill. gram director and music director. So the lion’s share of my day is sorting through the records we’ve received and have in our library, and then schedul- ing the music we have in our radio stations. Also dealing with the talent, get- ting them their music and going over their shows, and dealing with any special programming we have coming down the pike. How many people on staff? There’s Paul Anthony, Rhonda Hamilton, Les Davis, Michael Bourne, James Brown (of the Sweet Rhythm club), Bruce Lundvall, Gary Burton and myself. Do you do live broadcasts as well as studio per- formances? We principally do live in studio performances be- cause it’s so convenient. It’s right here in Mid- town, and we have everything we need here in- cluding the engineer, so the musicians can just walk in and hit. That tends to be our focus, but we’ve done live programming in the past – we broadcasted the 50th Anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival. You also have a blues channel. Has that also been well received? The common link, from what I gather, is that people are thrilled to have it on. These are formats that have not really done so well on conventional radio, and doesn’t even exist in different pockets. Courtesy Sirius Satellite Radio So when folks get connected with Sirius, whether Matt Abramovitz with at the Sirius studios. it’s for Howard Stern or Sports or News, they can also have blues any time they want. So you’re reaching the people that might not otherwise have access to the music. Those are the emails and phone calls that stand out to me, whether it’s Wis- consin or Kansas. They say that they don’t have anything like it nearby. Is it a challenge to try to keep a national perspective when programming? People actually like the music calendar. We do a weekly rundown of who is playing in the major clubs, or at least a chunk of them – Regatta Bar, Jazz Showcase, Jazz Bakery and so forth – and people really like hearing what’s go- ing on. It makes them feel like they’re on top of what’s going on. Any plans for the future? We’ve got a lot of great stuff planned for April, which is what I’m focused on now. I’m just working with Bill Charlap, and doing whatever else we have planned for Jazz Appreciation Month. Five Records From Jackie McLean We Turned To

ight Now! (Blue Note) 1965 Lots of great material, but “Poor Eric,” written by a very young session pianist Larry RWillis, is so haunting that it’s spooky. – T.H.

ertigo (Blue Note) 1980 If only stuff taken from the vaults always sounded this Vgood, though it didn’t hurt that he was using the Blue Note stable of musicians (Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, Billy Higgins, etc.) – T.H.

et Freedom Ring (Blue Note) 1962 One of the first bebop veterans to dive into the avant- Lgarde, McLean soars to dizzying heights as he explores. – T.H.

estination Out (Blue Note) 1963 Teaming up with trombonist Grachan Moncur III – Dand Bobby Hutcherson, Larry Ridley and – McLean had one foot in the blues and the other in out- er space on an album featuring his most beautiful playing. – E.T.

ature Boy (Blue Note) 2000 He’s joined by old friends (including the also deceased NBilly Higgins) on his last album, which still found him in good form. – T.H.

– Tad Hendrickson and Ed Trefzger
