The Business Organization of the Bourbon Factories: Mastercraftsmen, Crafts, and Families in the Capodimonte Porcelain Works and the Royal Factory at San Leucio Silvana Musella Guida Without exaggerating what was known as the “heroic age” of the reign of Charles of Bourbon of which José Joaquim de Montealegre was the undisputed doyen, and without considering the controversial developments of manufacturing in Campania, I should like to look again at manufacturing under the Bourbons and to offer a new point of view. Not only evaluating its development in terms of the products themselves, I will consider the company's organization and production strategies, points that are often overlooked, but which alone can account for any innovative capacity and the willingness of the new government to produce broader-ranging results.1 The two case studies presented here—the porcelain factory at Capodimonte (1740-1759) and the textile factory in San Leucio (1789-1860)—though from different time periods and promoted by different governments, should be considered sequentially precisely because of their ability to impose systemic innovations.2 The arrival of the new sovereign in the company of José Joaquin de Montealegre, led to an activism which would have a lasting effect.3 The former was au fait with economic policy strategy and the driving force of a great period of economic modernization, and his repercussions on the political, diplomatic and commercial levels provide 1 For Montealegre, cf. It is the capital of Castilla-La Mancha and its name has a Latin origin which means “erected, at the top” due to its geographic location. Monastery San Juan de los Reyes It was designed by the architect Juan Guas as a request of the Catholic Kings for the Franciscan Order to commemorate their victory at the Battle of Toro (1476). It was declared Historic-Artistic Monument of national interest in 1926. Formed by a unique nave, it has open chapels with arches to allow the practice of simultaneous rites. The temple, completed in 1495, has an Elizabethan style, made with one nave with alcove chapels between the buttress and with chorus raised at the feet. The cloister, considered one of the Spanish jewels of the Gothic period, is the most antique of the two it had and it suffered many restorations. It has two floors and has a squared floor. The church communicates with the cloister by the south side through two doors situated in the transept and the nave. En El Escorial «MURIÓ LA ARQUITECTURA» Delfín RODRÍGUEZ RUIZ Universidad Complutense de Madrid Los edificios, como otros muchos objetos y acontecimientos, no agotan su significado en torno a la época histórica que los vio surgir y durante la cual fueron realizados, usados o sucedieron. A veces las obras se prolongan durante siglos, transformando la idea inicial, alte- rando y adaptando sus funciones y lenguajes, incluso su significado. En otras ocasiones cambian los usos y los significados, aunque no la arquitectura. Por otra parte, sobre las construcciones se acumulan in- terpretaciones que pueden hacer de un mismo edificio un lugar míti- co, legendario o directamente despreciable, cuando no lírico, como propuso insólitamente Ortega y Gasset al hablar del Escorial mien- tras leía a Azorín ' . No compartía esa idea, ni otras muchas, Miguel de Unamuno, que llegó a escribir después, en 1924, lo siguiente: «No sé cómo a Carlos de Gante, al hijo de la loca de Castilla, no se le ocu- rrió mandar que le enterrasen en la cumbre de Gredos y no que su hi- jo le llevase luego al gran artefacto histórico del Escorial, a aquel hó- rrido panteón que parece un almacén de lencería» 2. Antes, se había revuelto incómodo ante las interpretaciones de C. Justi sobre el edi- ficio de Felipe II y, en 1912, escribió una maravillosa apología de su desnudez, casi nunca tenida en cuenta. De la lectura de Justi, histo- riador tan importante por tantas otras tareas con respecto al arte es- pañol, incluida su inolvidable monografía sobre Velázquez, Unamu- no pensaba que era, como había ocurrido tópica e históricamente de antiguo, más una lectura «política» que «estética» y escribía: «nada hay tan dificil como gustar el encanto del desnudo arquitectónico.. -

Propuesta de recreación del retablo mayor diseñado por Sabatini, con la pintura de Goya y la escultura de Villabrille, por L. A. Mingo Macías, C. Pardos y J. Urrea BRAC, 54, 2019, pp. 72-85, ISNN: 1132-078 LOS CAPUCHINOS DEL PRADO: PEREDA, VILLABRILLE, SABATINI Y GOYA Jesús Urrea Fernández Académico Resumen: La austeridad de la orden capuchina no estuvo reñida en su madrileño convento de San Antonio del Prado con la presencia en su templo de obras de arte de sobresaliente interés. Los sucesivos altares que tuvo su presbiterio contaron con la intervención de artistas tan destacados como Antonio Pereda, Juan Alonso Villabrille y Ron, Francesco Sabatini o Francisco de Goya. En el trabajo se aportan novedades y precisiones sobre todos ellos y se propone la recreación del último retablo mayor que tuvo la iglesia. Palabras clave: Orden capuchina. Madrid. THE CAPUCHINS OF THE PRADO. PEREDA, VILLABRILLE, SABATINI AND GOYA Abstract: The austerity of the Capuchin order it is not reflected in the convent of San Antonio del Prado, Madrid, where the presence in its temple of outstanding pieces of art make it unique. The successive altars that its presbytery had had were the result of the intervention of such prominent artists as Antonio Pereda, Juan Alonso Villabrille y Ron, Francesco Sabatini or Francisco de Goya. The following article provides a highly detailed new approach of all of the works of the aforementioned artists. -
Architectural Temperance: Spain and Rome, 1700-1759
Architectural Temperance Spain and Rome, 1700–1759 Architectural Temperance examines relations between Bourbon Spain and papal Rome (1700–1759) through the lens of cultural politics. With a focus on key Spanish architects sent to study in Rome by the Bourbon Kings, the book also discusses the establishment of a program of architectural educa- tion at the newly-founded Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. Victor Deupi explores why a powerful nation like Spain would temper its own building traditions with the more cosmopolitan trends associated with Rome; often at the expense of its own national and regional traditions. Through the inclusion of previously unpublished documents and images that shed light on the theoretical debates which shaped eighteenth-century architecture in Rome and Madrid, Architectural Temperance provides an insight into readers with new insights into the cultural history of early modern Spain. Victor Deupi teaches the history of art and architecture at the School of Architecture and Design at the New York Institute of Technology and in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Fairfield University. His research focuses on cultural politics in the early modern Ibero-American world.
