The Business Organisation of the Bourbon Factories
The Business Organization of the Bourbon Factories: Mastercraftsmen, Crafts, and Families in the Capodimonte Porcelain Works and the Royal Factory at San Leucio Silvana Musella Guida Without exaggerating what was known as the “heroic age” of the reign of Charles of Bourbon of which José Joaquim de Montealegre was the undisputed doyen, and without considering the controversial developments of manufacturing in Campania, I should like to look again at manufacturing under the Bourbons and to offer a new point of view. Not only evaluating its development in terms of the products themselves, I will consider the company's organization and production strategies, points that are often overlooked, but which alone can account for any innovative capacity and the willingness of the new government to produce broader-ranging results.1 The two case studies presented here—the porcelain factory at Capodimonte (1740-1759) and the textile factory in San Leucio (1789-1860)—though from different time periods and promoted by different governments, should be considered sequentially precisely because of their ability to impose systemic innovations.2 The arrival of the new sovereign in the company of José Joaquin de Montealegre, led to an activism which would have a lasting effect.3 The former was au fait with economic policy strategy and the driving force of a great period of economic modernization, and his repercussions on the political, diplomatic and commercial levels provide 1 For Montealegre, cf. Since its creation as capital by Philip II in 1561, the city had not been treated as an autonomous municipality, but as an inadvertent extension of the court.1 While Hapsburg Madrid was a canvas for displaying royal authority in processions and temporary ceremonial architecture enacted before a passive populace, Borbón Madrid was fashioned into a permanent reminder of a modern and enlightened monarchy that invited open air public participation and interaction. -

Madrid's population was initially Iberian and later Roman, and is possibly the Mantua found in certain ancient references and the Roman Miacum from the "Antonine itinerary", although some historians dispute this. It is now commonly believed that the original name of the settlement here was Matrice, a pre-Muslim word, which refers to the waters of the area and particularly to the stream running down the Calle de Segovia. However, Madrid as such does not achieve a mention in chronicles until the late tenth century, at which time there was already a fort or castle where the Royal Palace stands today. This fort was occupied by the Moors, who having named the River Manzanares al-Magrit ("source of water"), referred to the area as Mayrit (from which Magerit, then Madrid) and around which the borough of Madrid developed in the following centuries. -

Madrid Altri punti di interesse Legenda dei punti riportati sulla mappa A Giardino Botanico Reale di Madrid PLAZA MURILLO 2 Realizzato nel 1755 per volontà del monarca Fernando VI, l'allestimento del Giardino Botanico Reale fu affidato all'esperto botanico José Quez che si adoperò a raccogliere circa 2.000 esemplari diversi di piante, provenienti non solo da diverse regioni della Spagna ma anche da tutta l'Europa. Il Giardino Botanico Reale si trovava inizialmente nei pressi dell'attuale “Porta di Ferro”, sulle rive del fiume Manzanarre, poi nel 1774, su ordine di Carlo III, venne spostato nel Paseo del Prado ed il suo riallestimento fu curato dagli architetti di corte Francesco Sabatini e Juan de Villanueva. In quella circostanza vennero costruite tre terrazze a gradini ed il Padiglione Villanueva, dove si tenevano all'epoca le lezioni universitarie, e furono applicati anche recinto e pergolati. Tra il 1974 e il 1981 arrivò l’ultima opera di restauro, che riportò il giardino al suo originale splendore e gli consegnò l'aspetto attuale. Il Giardino Botanico Reale di Madrid è praticamente adiacente al Parco del Retiro, il giardino pubblico più famoso e più visitato di tutta la città. A Museo del Prado Il Museo del Prado è situato in una splendida zona del centro di Madrid, lungo il viale del Paseo del Prado (la Passeggiata del Prato). La sua fondazione risale al 1821 ad opera dei Reali di Spagna, i quali vollero allestire uno spazio espositivo per le numerose opere di artisti spagnoli in loro possesso. Successivamente la ricchezza e la fama del museo aumentarono grazie alla presenza anche di preziosi dipinti di artisti italiani, olandesi e fiamminghi. -

WHAT Architect WHERE Notes Zone 1: City Center Built in 2006 as an office tower 230 m high. The program consists of 43 office floors, two corporate floors at the top of the tower, 3 floors of commercial spaces at the base of the building, and 6 levels Pei Cobb Freed & Paseo de la ***** Torre Espacio of underground parking. The tower’s form evolves from a square in Partners Castellana, 259 plan at its base to a gently curved lozenge, shaped by the intersection of two quarter circles, at its crown. The interior can't be visited but it has a restaurant on the 33rd floor. The highest in Spain. Torre de Cristal was built in 2009 as an office tower and it's 249m high. Like a shaft of crystal, Torre de Cristal has an angled, sculptural form. The building’s facets reflect the sky, giving life and movement Paseo de la ***** Torre Cristal Cesar Pelli to the structure. The top level of this 50-story office tower contains Castellana, 259 a winter garden, a vertical space on the west interior wall. Lit at night, the winter garden is visible along the Paseo de la Castellana and throughout northern Madrid. The project, a tower with mixed use between hotel an offices, was built in 2008. The building is fragmented by three fissures into three pieces, which increase the volume’s sense of verticality. These fissures introduce light into the building’s interior creating the illusion Carlos Rubio Carvajal Paseo de la of grouping single vertical pieces.
