Eric’s Cheat Sheet for Sir and the to supplement The Poems of the Pearl Manuscript, ed. Andrew and Waldron

FITT 1

Every word whose spelling and/or meaning differs from Modern English usage is glossed. When a word appears with the same exact spelling and the same exact meaning more than once, it is only glossed the first time. Modern English descendants of the Middle English headwords are printed in capitals. When the Modern English descendant is not the most idiomatic translation of the Middle English, it is enclosed in parentheses. After line 100, no gloss is given for words and passages translated by Andrew and Waldron in the notes at the bottom of the page. After line 200, no gloss is given for common poetic inversions of syntax, e.g., hym to TO HIM. Be on the lookout for inverted syntax, especially in the second half of the line.

FITT 2

New words not glossed in Fitt 1 are glossed. Variant spellings of words already glossed (e.g., riche, rych, and ryche RICH) and inflected or conjugated forms of words already glossed (e.g., sitte and sytten SIT, seten SAT) are omitted when the meaning is the same. No gloss is given for words and passages translated by Andrew and Waldron in the notes at the bottom of the page. No gloss is given for common poetic inversions of syntax, e.g., hym to TO HIM. Be on the lookout for inverted syntax, especially in the second half of the line.
