Not least amongst these is the issue of environmental protection. The neglect that occurs during such periods of war is costly and lengthy to remedy as scant regard is given at the time to the implications of environmental neglect. This results devastation of natural resources and the almost total destruction of infrastructure (thermal and hydro power plants; domestic and industrial water supply systems; sewerage and refuse disposal systems; transportation network; etc.). In many cases, this process of devastation continues after conflict has ceased. This was the case for Bosnia and Herzegovina
