Oh, what wonders could emerge from Fellow & Son Machine Shop. For anyone with a mechanical interest to their musings or anyone that was handy with their hands or someone who imagined how their life could be improved by mechanization and invention, they could idle away hours in a machine shop. In Belvidere in the later 19th Century, the machine shop was Fellow & Son. The photograph shown here was shot, perhaps, in the 1890s when the shop was one where farmers and local residents would come if they needed to repair work done on anything made of any metal or if they needed a set of harness hames made or if they needed pipes made to convey water from a well to their house. Fellow & Son could manage the job and perform the task. What more could anyone ask from a machine shop? The structure that housed the business was found at the base of the State Street Bridge on the south side of the bridge. That site being the physical center of town, it was certainly a handy location to do business. The building was at a crossroads and that was long before there was a “side” perception of the village. Anyone that travelled through downtown Belvidere would sooner-or-later, pass Fellow & Son. Fellow and his son were both adept in the operation of a forge. Dailey once said, “So, what’s wrong with doing business with your friends?” If any politician ever supported “doing business with your friends,” it was Mayor Dailey, the elder, and Mayor Richard M. Dailey, the younger. Down through the ages and from one form of government to another, most elected leaders preferred doing business with friends instead of with strangers. And, down through the ages, elected officials have most often set forth to pack councils, committees, boards and panels with more friends and to rely on fewer strangers. Est. 1996 Sun Tzu, a 6th Century BC military strategist wrote in his seminal book, The Art of War, “Keep your friends Est. 1996 close but your enemies closer.” But, more often, the opposite view is the case in local politics. Local government is where packing vacancies with friends is more often found. Federal officials appoint Real Journalism For A Real Democracy lobbyists who often pose as “distant” friends. City Councils, County Boards, park boards, boards of trustees, planning committees; all of these entities are subject to elected leaders appointing friends to serve who will Publisher David C. Many might remember noting various leaders of local board(s) of education, city and county government and Design/Layout Ted Staniec find that some of those elected leaders sought to pack committees with those they trusted and favored. The Design/AdvertisingDena Roethler qualifications of the appointee were often irrelevant to their allegiance or their affiliation with the leader. The Advertising Cathy Wargo practice continues today and will continue for decades to come. What local residents should note is not that the activity occurs but to ask the leaders, why they are pandering to the same form of gross favoritism. Advertising Danielle Wilson One problem with local government is the general lack of enthusiasm many citizens have to volunteer to serve in Reporter Ronnie Thompson the duties of local government. There is a fog of apathy that has engulfed modern local government. Many elected leaders complain how difficult it is to find people to serve regardless of their qualifications, if any. Many officials would prefer to provide the public $70 per year only minimal details of how they spend taxpayer revenue while managing the people’s business. $40 for 25 weeks The sentence above recounts statements made in confidence by former members of the County Board and $23 for 13 weeks City Council dating over a decade ago. Many of these idle comments from former local leaders were made after reporters had granted confidence to deny identification. One example of this behavior is found in the official record that occurred a number of years ago duringa meeting of a local County Board finance committee. One former County representative had asked why there was OBITUARIES a discrepancy between the reported number of automobile titles held by the sheriff and the actual number of titles. The sheriff was called to comment and the meeting was gaveled to order by the chairman who said, “We are here to discuss how the people’s money is spent.” With that, a former state’s attorney delivered to the only reporter present in the room a page from Westlaw that Hermanson, Beverly, 80, Belvidere, January 30th identified exclusions under Illinois law to the open meetings act. Highlighted on the sheet was the exclusion that Lanning, Virginia, 83, Belvidere, January 25th identified when matters of undercover police work was to be discussed, the meeting would be closed. With that, Moyer, James, 82, Belvidere, January 27th the reporter was asked to leave the meeting. Peacock, Violet, 85, Poplar Grove, January 28th Perhaps it is naïve to expect elected leaders to support ethical behavior. But just following the law is not Tomamichel, Esther, 98, Belvidere, January 25th necessarily serving in an ethical manner. Taxpayers must expect that ethics be abided by, that appointments be made in a transparent manner and that boards, councils, and committee not be packed with pals of the elected leaders or scions of respected families. If no one but pals of elected leaders are chosen to serve then this community will repeat the same Kabuki dance that has bankrupted the State of Illinois. BELVIDERE FUNERAL HOME INC. 203 LOGAN AVE.
