Baseball History and Three Men That Almost Single-Handedly Brought Baseball Back 100 HUGGINS & SCOTT AUCTION: SEPT 29-30, 2010 WWW.HUGGINSANDSCOTT.COM • 1.866.462.2273 590. Massive Cal Ripken PSA 10 & BGS 9.5 Collection of (1443) Cards During the darkest hours of the most trying events is when real heroes emerge. There have been three such events in baseball history and three men that almost single-handedly brought baseball back. These events and the men that helped save baseball are forever joined. The first was the Black Sox Scandal, an event that rocked the baseball establishment so hard that F. Scott Fitzgerald mentioned it in The Great Gatsby and then along came Babe Ruth. The second event was World War II; attendance was down and the masses were losing interest and then along came Jackie Robinson. Fast forward fifty years to the strike short- ened 1994 season, saved by none other than Cal Ripken Jr. in 1995 with his games played streak. The offered collection is nearly as amazing a feat as the 2632 straight games that Ripken played. With a total of (1443) cards in all, the massive grouping has been encapsulated by either PSA or BGS with nearly all achieving the grade of GEM MINT or PRISTINE. Included are (36) autographed cards, (5) GEM MINT rookie cards and a plethora of rare inserts, refractors and relics cards. There are (1261) different Cal Ripken cards among the (1443) examples. Highlights include Rookie and Minor League Cards: 1980 WBTV Charlotte O’s Blue Border (PSA 8), 1981 TCMA Rochester (PSA 10), 1982 Donruss #405 (PSA 10), 1982 Fleer #176 (PSA 10), 1982 Topps #21 (PSA 10), (2) 1982 Topps Traded #98T (PSA10, BGS 9.5); Regular Issue Cards: 1983 Donruss #279 (PSA 10), (2) 1983 Topps #163 (BGS 10 Pristine, PSA 10), (2) 1984 Donruss #106 (BGS 9.5, PSA 10), 1984 Fleer #17 (PSA 10), 1984 Topps Tiffany (PSA 10), 1985 Donruss #169 (PSA 10), 1985 Fleer #187 (PSA 10), 1985 Topps Tiffany #30 (PSA 10); Insert/Relics Cards: 1993 Finest Refractor (PSA 10), 1993 SP Holoview Red Die-Cut (PSA 10), (2) 1994 Flair Hot Gloves (both PSA 10), 1995 Bowman’s Best Refractor (PSA 10), (2) 1995 Flair Hot Gloves (both PSA 10), 1996 Bowman’s Best Atomic Refractor (PSA 10) 2005 Absolute Memorabilia TOTL 6-relic card (1/1 BGS 9.5), 2005 Prime Cuts Timeline Materials 3-relic card (5/5 BGS 9.5); Autographed Cards: 1982 Fleer #176 (PSA 10 for auto only), 92) 1992 Donruss Elite (BGS 9/10, 8.5/9), 1998 Donruss Century Mark (BGS 9/10), (3) 2000 Bowman’s Best Franchise Favorites (PSA 10, BGS 10/10, BGS 9.5/10), (2) 2000 SP Authentic Buyback (both PSA 9), 2001 SP Authentic Chirography (PSA 10), (2) 2001 SP Authentic Chirography /250 (both BGS 9.5), 2001 SP Authentic Chirography /100 (PSA 10), 2001 SP Game-Used Auto /50 (PSA 10), 2003 SP Authentic Chirography /250 (PSA 9), 2005 UD Ultimate Signature #2/10 (BGS 9/10) and 2005 UD Ultimate Signature ROYs with Jeter #23/75 (BGS 9.5/10). • National Football League Franchise Transactions
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 4 (1982) The following article was originally published in PFRA's 1982 Annual and has long been out of print. Because of numerous requests, we reprint it here. Some small changes in wording have been made to reflect new information discovered since this article's original publication. NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE FRANCHISE TRANSACTIONS By Joe Horrigan The following is a chronological presentation of the franchise transactions of the National Football League from 1920 until 1949. The study begins with the first league organizational meeting held on August 20, 1920 and ends at the January 21, 1949 league meeting. The purpose of the study is to present the date when each N.F.L. franchise was granted, the various transactions that took place during its membership years, and the date at which it was no longer considered a league member. The study is presented in a yearly format with three sections for each year. The sections are: the Franchise and Team lists section, the Transaction Date section, and the Transaction Notes section. The Franchise and Team lists section lists the franchises and teams that were at some point during that year operating as league members. A comparison of the two lists will show that not all N.F.L. franchises fielded N.F.L. teams at all times. The Transaction Dates section provides the appropriate date at which a franchise transaction took place. Only those transactions that can be date-verified will be listed in this section. An asterisk preceding a franchise name in the Franchise list refers the reader to the Transaction Dates section for the appropriate information.

HISTORY HISTORY ILLINOIS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS 1914 Possibly the most dominant team in Illinois football history was the 1914 squad. The squad was only coach Robert Zuppke’s second at Illinois and would be the first of four na tional championship teams he would lead in his 29 years at Illinois. The Fighting Illini defense shut out four of its seven opponents, yielding only 22 points the entire 1914 season, and the averaged up an incredible 32 points per game, in cluding a 51-0 shellacking of Indiana on Oct. 10. This team was so good that no one scored a point against them until Oct. 31, the fifth game of the seven-game season. The closest game of the year, two weeks later, wasn’t very close at all, a 21-7 home decision over Chicago. Leading the way for Zuppke’s troops was right halfback Bart Macomber. He led the team in scoring. Left guard Ralph Chapman was named to Walter Camp’s first-team All-America squad, while left half back Harold Pogue, the team’s second-leading scorer, was named to Camp’s second team. 1919 The 1919 team was the only one of Zuppke’s national cham pi on ship squads to lose a game. Wisconsin managed to defeat the Fighting Illini in Urbana in the third game of the season, 14-10, to temporarily knock Illinois out of the conference lead. However, Zuppke’s men came back from the Wisconsin defeat with three consecutive wins to set up a show down with the Buckeyes at Ohio Stadium on Nov.

For anyone with a mechanical interest to their musings or anyone that was handy with their hands or someone who imagined how their life could be improved by mechanization and invention, they could idle away hours in a machine shop. In Belvidere in the later 19th Century, the machine shop was Fellow & Son. The photograph shown here was shot, perhaps, in the 1890s when the shop was one where farmers and local residents would come if they needed to repair work done on anything made of any metal or if they needed a set of harness hames made or if they needed pipes made to convey water from a well to their house. Fellow & Son could manage the job and perform the task. What more could anyone ask from a machine shop? The structure that housed the business was found at the base of the State Street Bridge on the south side of the bridge. That site being the physical center of town, it was certainly a handy location to do business. The building was at a crossroads and that was long before there was a “side” perception of the village. Anyone that travelled through downtown Belvidere would sooner-or-later, pass Fellow & Son.
