  • An Introduction to the Bofedales of the Peruvian High Andes
An introduction to the bofedales of the Peruvian High Andes M.S. Maldonado Fonkén International Mire Conservation Group, Lima, Peru _______________________________________________________________________________________ SUMMARY In Peru, the term “bofedales” is used to describe areas of wetland vegetation that may have underlying peat layers. These areas are a key resource for traditional land management at high altitude. Because they retain water in the upper basins of the cordillera, they are important sources of water and forage for domesticated livestock as well as biodiversity hotspots. This article is based on more than six years’ work on bofedales in several regions of Peru. The concept of bofedal is introduced, the typical plant communities are identified and the associated wild mammals, birds and amphibians are described. Also, the most recent studies of peat and carbon storage in bofedales are reviewed. Traditional land use since prehispanic times has involved the management of water and livestock, both of which are essential for maintenance of these ecosystems. The status of bofedales in Peruvian legislation and their representation in natural protected areas and Ramsar sites is outlined. Finally, the main threats to their conservation (overgrazing, peat extraction, mining and development of infrastructure) are identified. KEY WORDS: cushion bog, high-altitude peat; land management; Peru; tropical peatland; wetland _______________________________________________________________________________________ INTRODUCTION organic soil or peat and a year-round green appearance which contrasts with the yellow of the The Tropical Andes Cordillera has a complex drier land that surrounds them. E-mail: [email protected] As currently defined, the genus Callona Waterhouse, 1840, contains nine species ranging in distribution from southwestern United States to Venezuela. However, the generic distinction between Callona and its closely allied Crioprosopus Audinet-Serville, 1834, is in need of clarification due to descriptions of both genera being based solely on females (monobasic), absence of allotypes from the type species of these genera, and from the sexual dimorphism displayed by several subsequently described species. Also, scarcity of specimens in collections is a confounding factor in making a determination in the assignment of species to either Callona or Crioprosopus. Several years ago a revision of the tribe Trachyderini Dupont (1836) was begun by two prominent North American figures in Cerambycidae systematic, Dr. John A. Chemsak and Mr. Frank T. Hovore; however, both passed away prior to completion of their revision. After their passing, several notes, description of undescribed new species and genera, and type specimens were found in the Essig Museum of Entomology in University of California, Berkeley. This publication provides the Chemsak & Hovore description of Callona flavofasciata from the orphaned type in the Essig Museum.

Science News Online Week of May 26, 2001; Vol. 159, No. 21 A Fly Called Iyaiyai And other true stories of scientific name-calling Susan Milius Neal Evenhuis takes it rather well when a reporter phones his office at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu and asks, What were you thinking? Some of the scientific names he's invented . Well, . Did he do those things on purpose? The roseate spoonbill, Ajaia ajaja, did not get its name from a cat pawing a keyboard. A 1648 report of the bird in Brazil gave the Tupi people's name for it as ajaja, and the later binomial system essentially doubled it. PhotoDisc Most of the time, Evenhuis comes across as an eminent, sane scientist. He's spent years mapping out the family trees and describing new species of flies, and he's published such landmark works as a catalog of 5,100 fossil species. He's officially named more than 300 kinds of flies, and most of the terms sound respectably unintelligible to the uninitiated. Several hours before fielding the phone call about his intentions, Evenhuis heard that he had been elected to the international commission overseeing scientific names for all of zoology. So, what did the accomplished taxonomist have in mind when he chose Dissop as the name for a genus of a hard-to-see fossil with the species name irae? Disap-pear-ee? And what about the genus called Iyaiyai, as in the lamenting trills of a mariachi song or the cry that goes with thumping a hand against one's forehead? Evenhuis has committed other merriments, too, and, yes, he says he intended all of them.
