Locked in a silent, intense embrace, nine pairs of stu- dents appeared to be learn- ing an intricate dance Saturday in an upstairs Uchida Hall gym. Suddenly, one partner would fall to the mats, the victim of a tricky body blow. All 18 are followers of the ancient Japanese martial art Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu. They attended a weekend-long seminar led by visiting master Bill Atkins. Garth Lynch, president of the San Jose State University Budo Taijutsu club, which sponsed the intensive weekend seminar, holds a second degree black belt in the ancient martial art, known as "the way of the warrior." Lynch said Budo Taijutsu is appealing because it doesn't rely on brute force the way so many other martial arts do, but uses subtle techniques of mind and body.
