Im Dezember 2000 haben wir erstmals einen Corporate Citizenship Report veröffentlicht. Dieser Bericht hat bei den Lesern viel Beachtung gefunden. Wir wollten mit dieser Publikation den Dialog mit unseren Stakeholdern, also unseren Kunden, Lieferanten, Investoren, Mitarbeitern und der an Siemens interessierten Öffentlichkeit um ein wichtiges Thema, unser gesellschaftli- ches Engagement in aller Welt, erweitern. Der vorliegende Report 2001 setzt diesen Dialog in intensivierter Form fort. Selten haben sich binnen Jahresfrist die Rahmenbedingungen für unsere Aktivitäten so grundlegend geändert wie während der vergangenen zwölf Monate. Zu allen branchenspezifischen, konjunkturellen und weltwirtschaft- lichen Veränderungen kam im Herbst noch die Herausforderung durch den Terrorismus, die für die gesamte Welt einen tiefen Einschnitt markiert. Ohne dass wir heute bereits mit Gewissheit absehen können, worauf wir uns in nächster Zukunft einstellen müssen, ist doch eines sicher: Gerade in einer Zeit so umfassender Herausforderungen sind der gesellschaftliche Dialog und die verantwortungsvolle Ausübung unserer Rolle als Corporate Citizen wichtiger denn je. -

Referring to the company's history of achieving success through well engineered refinements of other people's inventions, one Fortune analyst noted that "second is best" might well serve as Siemens' motto. But opportunism is not the only interesting facet of Siemens' history, which is also a story of a long family tradition and intimate involvement with some of the most important events of the 19th and 20th centuries. Siemens & Halske was founded in Berlin in 1847 by Werner Siemens and J. G. Halske to manufacture and install telegraphic systems. Siemens, a former artillery officer in the Prussian army and an engineer who already owned a profitable patent for electroplating, was the driving force behind the company and remained so for the rest of his life. The company received its first major commission in 1848, when it contracted to build a telegraph link between Berlin and Frankfurt. Construction of telegraph systems boomed in the mid 19th century, and Siemens & Halske was well equipped to take advantage of the situation. In 1853, it received a commission to build an extensive telegraph system in Russia. Upon its completion, the company opened an office in St. Petersburg under the direction of Werner Siemens' brother Carl Siemens. In 1857 Siemens & Halske helped develop the first successful deep sea telegraphic cable. -

Ernst Siemens von S E LIFelINES IN el Ernst LIF von Siemens Ernst von Siemens was a major figure in the history of the electrical engineering company, setting its strategic course in the decades of rebuilding following World War II. It was under his leadership that today’s Siemens AG was organized. The grandson of company founder Werner von Siemens, he was also a man of wide- ranging interests and, in addition to his entrepreneurial activities, an important patron of the arts. Ernst von Siemens is remembered above all for the cultural foundations that he established. The brochure is the fourth volume in the LIFE- LINES series, which is dedicated to introducing the men and women who have done the most to shape the history and development of Siemens. This group includes businessmen who led the company, members of the Manag- ing Board, engineers, inventors and creative thinkers. Ernst Siemens von E G LEBENSWEGE E NSW E B E Ernst L von Siemens Ernst von Siemens war aufgrund seiner strate- gischen Weichenstellungen von großer Bedeu- tung für den Elektrokonzern in den Jahrzehnten des Wiederaufbaus nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Unter seiner Ägide erfolgte 1966 die Gründung der heutigen Siemens AG. Über seine unter- nehmerische Tätigkeit hinaus hat der vielseitig interessierte Enkel des Firmengründers Werner von Siemens als Mäzen Großartiges geleistet. Heute ist sein Name vor allem durch die von ihm gegründeten Stiftungen präsent. Die Broschüre ist der vierte Band der Schriften- reihe LEBENSWEGE, in der Persönlichkeiten porträtiert werden, die die Geschichte und Entwicklung von Siemens auf unterschiedliche Weise geprägt haben. Das Spektrum des Per- sonenkreises reicht von den Unternehmern an der Spitze des Hauses über einzelne Vorstands- mitglieder, Techniker und Erfinder bis hin zu Kreativen.
