STATEMENT OP EXTERNAL EXPERIENCE AND INTELLECTUALITY 78 CONCLUSION 100 iii INTRODUCTION Many novels of the past few decades have been characterized by theraes which eraphasize human freedom, rebellion, fatalism, mechanical necessity, and obsession, and because of the tendency of the "raodern hero" to vacil- late in a somewhat precarious way between the prevalent themes of Promethean defiance and Sisyphean despair, there seems to have developed a pattern in modern literature, ironic and paradoxical, that involves the hero in a struggle for identity in a world that almost always is rejected by him as incoraprehensible or absurd. Because of the omnivorous nature of the novel as a literary form, both the intellectual therae of defiance and the raetaphysical "anguish" are presented not only in sophisticated, cosraopolitian, intellectual set- tings, but also in provincial atraospheres, where daily rou- tines, sounds, and sraells are very familiar. Therefore, the raodern novel or, as Howe prefers, the "post-raodem" novel, in raany ways serves as a docuraent on raan and his attempt to elicit meaning frora a world that alraost always proves to be irremediably absurd. -

[Expositions 6.1 (2012) 52–58] Expositions (online) ISSN: 1747–5376 The Search to Be Human in Dangling Man LEE TREPANIER Saginaw Valley State University Bellow’s first novel, Dangling Man (1944), is about a man named Joseph who does not know how to integrate himself in American life without losing the spiritual value of his isolation from society. Influenced by the current milieu of the time of modernism and existentialism, Bellow presents an alienated hero who seeks to find meaning in a hostile environment.1 Written as a diary, the novel’s principal audience is himself as he details the life of a young man who believes that spiritual enlightenment can be obtained by isolating himself from society in order to study the thinkers of the Enlightenment. As the months pass, Joseph erupts into anti-social behavior, quarrels with his friends and relatives, and succumbs to outbursts of paranoia and violent behavior. At the end of the novel he admits that his experiment has been a failure and that his search for meaning cannot be conducted in this manner. Reduced to the same common physical, social, and historical denominator as everyone else, Joseph joins the Army to live a life of regular hours and regimentation. Initial reviews of the novel were positive and focused on the theme of Joseph’s alienation from society: a “dangling hero” who faces the disillusionment of his age.2 Subsequent criticisms have explored Joseph representing an alternate set of values for the modern age with his attempts to subvert the idea of an objective reality subscribed -

The authors hold that Saul Bellow repeatedly delineates his heroes as intellectuals embodied in the Jewish intelligence motif and associated with the Jewish tradition of intellectualism. The authors propose that Saul Bellow’s writings about the heroes are shadowed by the collective unconsciousness of the Jewish people. Index Terms—motif, Saul Bellow, Jewish literature, intellectualism I. INTRODUCTION The rise and fall of national literature are closely associated with its history. It is true whenever it refers to the Oriental literature or the Occidental ones. There are always some people and events occurring in some stage of the national history that offer vivid images of literary prototypes. The people or events are repeatedly portrayed, mentioned or sung, as they embody the national spirits, which echo to George Brandes (1842-1927), a Danish critic who thought literary history is a representation of its national spirit. The people or events still have some things in common, though they are often changed or adapted in writings by authors. -

He exposes in the novel the living condition and the psyche of modern man through the exploration of the Protagonist’s inner world. He echoes with Sartre’s existentialist spirit to be, which is of positive significance for man to live in an absurd world. This research consists of two chapters. ANALYSIS Seize the Day (1956) Saul Bellow (1915-2005) “In Bellow’s work the quest for freedom is always qualified by the deeper need for reconciliation. The tension between these two elements is nowhere better realized than in Seize the Day, 1956, Bellow’s only novelette to date and possible his finest work….a work that adumbrates those destructive elements of American culture which Augie managed to escape. When we see Wilhelm he is already in his middle forties, an established failure in the business as in the private world, and the pattern of his past errors had worked itself out. His early ‘career’ in Hollywood, for which he gives up college, culminates after seven years in a job as a movie extra. More recently, the company for which he works as a sales manager eases him out before he attains executive status. Separated from his wife, Margaret, and their two children, he is nevertheless bled remorselessly by her constant demands. And his bland, egotistic father, once a distinguished physician, asks only that he be allowed to enjoy his retirement in affluent peace. The drama of the story derives from the close, ugly duel between father and son. At sake in this combat are the ideas of different generations on success, love, human dignity. The father’s idea is generally one of self-sufficiency, stiff-backed and aggressive, an idea identified with a vanishing era of entrepreneurism. The son presents an image of candid failure, dependency, willing self- humiliation. Wilhelm may indulge himself in more self-pity than Dr. Adler would ever allow himself, but he is also far less selfish and hypocritical; he does not try to dodge the draft as his father recommends nor does he attempt to disguise his weaknesses behind a front of unctuous pride. -
