Arthropod assemblages comprise the main part of the biodiversity in tropical rainforests (Erwin 1982, Wilson 1992). Many inventory studies have been done focusing on various arthropod taxa to reveal the species-richness of arthropod assemblages in SEA tropical rainforests (e.g. Holloway & lntachat 2003). Therefore, the current study was designed and carried out during the past decade. A list of LFPs for 207 butterfly species (Super family Papilionoidea) of Sri Lanka is presented based on local studies and includes 785 plant-butterfly combinations and 480 plant species. Many of these combinations are reported for the first time in Sri Lanka. The impact of introducing new plants on the dynamics of abundance and distribution of butterflies, the possibility of butterflies being pests on crops, and observations of LFPs of rare butterfly species, are discussed. Maton) is one of the major spice crops of India, which were the world’s largest producer and exporter of cardamom till 1980. There has however been a reduction in production, mainly because of Katte disease, caused by cardamom mosaic virus (CdMV) a potyvirus. Viral diseases can be managed effectively by early diagnosis using serological methods. In the present investigation, CdMV isolates were sampled from Mudigere, Karnataka, ultra purified, and electron micro graphed for confirmation. Polyclonal antibodies were raised against the virus and a direct antigen coating plate Enzyme linked immunosorbent Assay (DAC-ELISA) and Dot-ELISA (DIBA) standardized to detect the virus in diseased and tissue cultured plants. Early diagnosis in planting material will aid in using disease free material for better yields and hence increased profit to the farmer. -

Important sightings include Blue Gem Poritia Methods erycinoides elsiei, Square-band Brownie Miletis nymphys porus, Plain Plushblue Flos apidanus ahamus, Blue Royal Ancema carmentalis, Study area Elwes Silverline Spindasis elwesi, Artipe skinneri, etc. The Panbari Reserve Forest (26036’N & 93030’E) is protected under the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) Keywords: Butterfly diversity, Kaziranga, Lycaenidae, northeastern India, Panbari Reserve. as its fourth addition (Images 1a,b & 2). The average elevation of the forest is around 90m. The altitude however ranges from 70–300 m. The reserve falls between Golaghat and elevation forests of Panbari Reserve, Kaziranga - West Karb Anglong (KA) districts of Assam. To the north of Karbi Hills, upper Assam is reported in this paper. Karbi the reserve lies Dollamora proposed reserve in Karbi Hills constitue a chain of hill ranges lying in middle Assam Anglong District and on the southern boundary is a in the southern bank of the river Brahmaputra. -

RINGKASAN Pengamatan telah dilahsanahati terhadap beberapa Zingiberaceae untuk mengetahui jenis-jeniss serangga y ang dapat menjadi hamanya. Dari banyak jenis serangga yang terqmati merusak bagian-bagian tanaman Zingiberaceae ini, lima terlihat mempuny ai potensi sebagai hama serius, yaitu Attacus atlas, Kirana diocles, Xanthoptera sp., "Jamides alecto dan Prodioctes sp, Walaupun demihian, berdasar- kan kegunaan bagian yang dirusah, hany a satu y ang perlu menr1apat penanganan pemberantasJn::tya, yaitu Prodioctes sp. Untuk jenis-jenis lainny a tindakan y ang perlti dilakukan lebih lanjut adalah tentang pemonitoran perilohu populasi. Dengan demikian gejala peledakan populasi dapat diketahui sehingga tindahan preoentif' dapat dilakukan. SUMMARY _. -' On some species of Zingiberaceae, observation have been done to record the possible insect pests on these host plants. Among the many species observed that cause damage ion parts of these zingiberaceous plants, five were observed to show potentials as serious pests. These were Attacus atlas, Kirana diocles, Xanthoptera sp., Jamides alecto and Prodioctes sp, However, based on the usefulness of the plant parts damaged, only one species could be considered as the dangerous pest that had to be handled carefully. This was Prodioctes sp. Fe! other species, the, need of further researches covers monitoring the population behaviour which is related to population out rreak, so that preventive action can be measured. INTRODUCTION Production of modern medicine as well as traditional "jamu" (medicine) in Indonesia requires a lot of supply of zingiberaoeous rhizomes. The increase of demand on this commodity results in the s more extensive planting of the zingiberaceous plants. -

In this study, a highly efficient DNA and RNA extraction protocol for cryopreserved samples from Elettaria cardamomum small cardamom plant was developed with modification in the CTAB and SDS method for DNA and RNA, re- Polyphenol spectively, with the inclusion of 2% ascorbic acid. DNA isolated by this method is highly suitable for PCR, restriction digestion and RAPD analysis. The RNA extraction method described here represent the presence of plant mRNA, small RNAs and viral RNA and, the isolated RNA proved amenable for RT-PCR and amplification of small and viral RNA. Nucleic acids extraction protocol developed here will be useful to develop genetic marker for cardamom, to clone cardamom genes, small RNAs and cardamom infecting viral genes and to perform gene expression and small RNA analysis. -

Bashar, S. Rahman and H. R. Khan Environmental Biology and Biodiversity Laboratory (EBBL), Department of Zoology, University of Dhaka, Dhaka-1000, Bangladesh Abstract A laboratory examination was done on the morphometric variation of lycaenid butterflies. Identifying characteristics, viz. forewing length (FWL), hind wing length (HWL), body length (BdL) and antennal length (AntL) were used for the analysis. A total of 514 individuals of lycaenid butterflies was identified under two subfamilies Polyommatinae and Theclinae. Among them 265 individuals were placed under 19 species of Polyommatinae and 249 individuals under 25 species of Theclinae. ANOVA tests were conducted to find differences between the butterfly species of the two subfamilies through identifying characters like FWL (F=10.37, P=0.005), HWL (F=3.81, P=0.067), BdL (F=5.78, P=0.027) and AntL (F=2.77, P=0.114). A linear regression analysis of FWL, HWL, BdL and AntL of the species under the two subfamilies showed significant differences between Polyommatinae and Theclinae. These differences stand among the species of both the subfamilies and produced good results to identify the species more correctly. INTRODUCTION Morphometrics is the study of any quantitative measurement and analysis of morphological traits affecting on it (Digo et al. 2015). Lycaenidae is commonly known as „Gossamer-winged butterflies‟ comprising a huge number of species– an estimated 6,000 species worldwide, with greatest diversity in the tropics (Ackery and Vane-Wright 1984, Fiedler 1996). -

Pierce PHYLOGENETIC HYPOTHESES OF THE PAPllIONOIDEA Although not for lack ofstudy, the evolutionary history of the rnajor lineages of "true" butterflies (Papilionoidea, including Hesperiidae) is still unknown, and multiple conflicting phylogenetic hypotheses exist in the literature. Assessing the systematic position of the metalmark butterflies (family Riodinidae) has been a particular challenge for this field. Furthermore, there is disagreement about the monophyly of this large group, which contains over 1,200 species. Most morphological studies place the riodinid butter flies as most closely related to the lycaenid butterflies, and identify the nymphalids as the closest relatives to this riodinid + lycaenid dade (Ehrlich and Ehrlich 1967; Kristensen 1976; Scott and Wright 1990; de jong et al. 1996a) (fig. 18.1A, B). These relationships have been inferred with a variety of phylogenetic methods and are supported by a number of adult, larval, and pupal synapomorphies, although few are universal or uniquely derived. An alternative hypothesis of the placement of the riodinids was proposed by Robbins (1988a). Based on a cladistic analysis of nine character states among four characters of the foreleg coxa, trochanter, and basal femur, Robb!ns suggested that the Riodinidae are more closely related to the Nymphalidae than to the Lycaenidae (fig. 18.1C), and split the lycaenids into two groups, which may not compose a monophyletic lineage: Lycaeninae-Theclinae Polyommatinae and Lipteninae-Poritjnae-Miletinae-Curetinae.
