View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by KUKILA KUKILA 6 No. 2 (1993): 85 - 109 RECENT ORNITHOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS FROM BURU by Paul Jepson (Final manuscript received 21 April 1993) Summary The island of Buru was visited between 8 Nov and 10 Dec 1969 and surveys conducted from field stations in the north-west of the island. A total of 112 species was recorded, including six of Bum's ten endemic species. Four of the endemic species, Pnoniturus mada, Monarcha loricatus, Rhipidura superflua and Zosterops buruensis were found to be quite common, but Lichmera deningeri and Cworacina fortis are considered to be uncommon or rare. The mountains or Burn from where Madanga ruficollis and Rhinomyias addita have previously beea collected were not visited. Concern is expressed concerning the status of two endemic parrots, Charmosyna toxopei and Tanypiathus gramineus, which were not conclusively recorded and which appear to have always been rare. Six species were recorded for the first tune on Buru. Introduction The Manchester Indonesia Islands Expedition visited the island of Buru between 8 Nov and 10 Dec 1989. The aim of the expedition was to obtain data related to the conservation of bird faunas. The results of the analysis of data on the ecology and habitat preferences of the bird species will appear elsewhere. The purpose of this paper is to present a systematic list of birds recorded on Bum by the expedition, and to publish notes collected for some of the species on moult, nests and vocalisations. Arthropod assemblages comprise the main part of the biodiversity in tropical rainforests (Erwin 1982, Wilson 1992). Parey* Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Rajouri – 185234, Jammu and Kashmir, India; [email protected] Abstract Himalayas represents one of the unique ecosystems in terms of species diversity and species richness. While studying taxa of butterflies in Jammu and Rajouri districts located in Western Himalaya, fourteen species (Abisara bifasciata Moore, Pareronia hippia Fabricius, Elymnias hypermnestra Linnaeus, Acraea terpsicore Linnaeus, Charaxes solon Fabricius, Symphaedra nais Forster, Neptis jumbah Moore, Moduza procris Cramer, Athyma cama Moore, Tajuria jehana Moore, Arhopala amantes Hewitson, Jamides celeno Cramer, Everes lacturnus Godart and Udaspes folus Cramer) are recorded for the first time from the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Investigations for butterflies were carried by following visual encounter method between 2014 and 2019 in morning hours from 7 am to 11 am throughout breeding seasons in Jammu and Rajouri districts. This communication deals with peculiar taxonomical identity, common name, global distribution, IUCN status and photographs of newly recorded butterflies. Therefore, the current study was designed and carried out during the past decade. A list of LFPs for 207 butterfly species (Super family Papilionoidea) of Sri Lanka is presented based on local studies and includes 785 plant-butterfly combinations and 480 plant species. Many of these combinations are reported for the first time in Sri Lanka. The impact of introducing new plants on the dynamics of abundance and distribution of butterflies, the possibility of butterflies being pests on crops, and observations of LFPs of rare butterfly species, are discussed. We developed a list of pests associated with beans (in any country) that occur in Jordan on any host based on scientific literature, previous commodity risk assessments, records of intercepted pests at ports-of-entry, and information from experts on bean production. This is a qualitative risk assessment, as we express estimates of risk in descriptive terms (High, Medium, and Low) rather than numerically in probabilities or frequencies. We identified seven quarantine pests likely to follow the pathway of introduction. We estimated Consequences of Introduction by assessing five elements that reflect the biology and ecology of the pests: climate-host interaction, host range, dispersal potential, economic impact, and environmental impact. We estimated Likelihood of Introduction values by considering both the quantity of the commodity imported annually and the potential for pest introduction and establishment. We summed the Consequences of Introduction and Likelihood of Introduction values to estimate overall Pest Risk Potentials, which describe risk in the absence of mitigation. -

Important sightings include Blue Gem Poritia Methods erycinoides elsiei, Square-band Brownie Miletis nymphys porus, Plain Plushblue Flos apidanus ahamus, Blue Royal Ancema carmentalis, Study area Elwes Silverline Spindasis elwesi, Artipe skinneri, etc. The Panbari Reserve Forest (26036’N & 93030’E) is protected under the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) Keywords: Butterfly diversity, Kaziranga, Lycaenidae, northeastern India, Panbari Reserve. as its fourth addition (Images 1a,b & 2). The average elevation of the forest is around 90m. The altitude however ranges from 70–300 m. The reserve is very close to National Highway 37 (NH37) on the Guwahati- The Lycaenidae (Blues) butterfly diversity in low Jorhat route. The reserve falls between Golaghat and elevation forests of Panbari Reserve, Kaziranga - West Karb Anglong (KA) districts of Assam. To the north of Karbi Hills, upper Assam is reported in this paper. Karbi the reserve lies Dollamora proposed reserve in Karbi Hills constitue a chain of hill ranges lying in middle Assam Anglong District and on the southern boundary is a in the southern bank of the river Brahmaputra. -

(Lepidopera: Lycaenidae) was studied on field pea variety HFP 529 under laboratory conditions (26±1ºC; 60-70% RH). It was observed that 14 eggs/ female were laid singly on twigs, flowers and pods. Pre-oviposition, oviposition, postoviposition and incubation periods were from 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 2 to 3 and 2 to 3 days, respectively. Mean larval period was 2.5, 2.6, 3.3 and 3.6 days for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th instars, respectively, with total larval duration of 12 days. Prepupal and pupal period was 2.22 and 8.00 days, respectively. The mean longevity of male and female was 8.0 and 9.5 days, respectively. Total life cycle varied from 29 to 35 days. RINGKASAN Pengamatan telah dilahsanahati terhadap beberapa Zingiberaceae untuk mengetahui jenis-jeniss serangga y ang dapat menjadi hamanya. Dari banyak jenis serangga yang terqmati merusak bagian-bagian tanaman Zingiberaceae ini, lima terlihat mempuny ai potensi sebagai hama serius, yaitu Attacus atlas, Kirana diocles, Xanthoptera sp., "Jamides alecto dan Prodioctes sp, Walaupun demihian, berdasar- kan kegunaan bagian yang dirusah, hany a satu y ang perlu menr1apat penanganan pemberantasJn::tya, yaitu Prodioctes sp. Untuk jenis-jenis lainny a tindakan y ang perlti dilakukan lebih lanjut adalah tentang pemonitoran perilohu populasi. Dengan demikian gejala peledakan populasi dapat diketahui sehingga tindahan preoentif' dapat dilakukan. SUMMARY _. -' On some species of Zingiberaceae, observation have been done to record the possible insect pests on these host plants. Among the many species observed that cause damage ion parts of these zingiberaceous plants, five were observed to show potentials as serious pests. These were Attacus atlas, Kirana diocles, Xanthoptera sp., Jamides alecto and Prodioctes sp, However, based on the usefulness of the plant parts damaged, only one species could be considered as the dangerous pest that had to be handled carefully. This was Prodioctes sp. Fe! other species, the, need of further researches covers monitoring the population behaviour which is related to population out rreak, so that preventive action can be measured. INTRODUCTION Production of modern medicine as well as traditional "jamu" (medicine) in Indonesia requires a lot of supply of zingiberaoeous rhizomes. The increase of demand on this commodity results in the s more extensive planting of the zingiberaceous plants. -
