From the classics to the new age crazy concoctions, we’ve enjoyed seeing what new directions bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts are taking. In this book we’ve collated our top 50 cocktails, that as a team we worked hard on to produce. We took into account the votes by all you amazing users on our site to try and maintain some sense of normality, while at the same time including some amazing inspired new creations. When we hit any heated discus- sions, there was only one thing for it - to taste test the cocktails to ensure we only chose the best. We hope you enjoy trying some of these as much as we did choosing and tasting them ourselves. Whatever you’re after, your favourite choice of tipple, or your mood we hopefully have included something to intrigue and inspire you. Nick Wilkins Make Me A Cocktail creator Equipment Cocktail Shaker You can’t get far with most cocktails without the staple of any personal home bar - the cocktail shaker. Add some ice to the ingredients within, shake for 10-15 seconds and strain into the required glass. Simple. Strainer Right after the cocktail shaker comes the strainer. Some shakers have a basic strainer built in, but to catch all those ice lumps or fruit pieces you don’t want in your finished product, a simple strainer suffices.

  • Trails of the Cocktail, Part 2
Trails of the Cocktail, Part 2 The various trails and diverging paths one must travel in order to uncover the true history of the cocktail continue to take the interested reader on a number of fascinating journeys. Cocktail bitters became the prime ingredient that distinguished the cocktail from other types of beverages, such as punches, slings, toddies, juleps, sours and fizzes. They were an important ingredient in the ―brandy cocktail‖, as evidenced below. Mayor Durrell Comes Upon the Brandy-Cocktail Edward Henry Durrell (July 14, 1810 – March 29, 1887) was A Harvard educated New Englander, born in New Hampshire, who became the 25th mayor of New Orleans in 1863. Mayor Edward H. Durrell Fluent in German, French and Spanish, Durrell read law at Harvard to enter the Bar in 1834. After a brief law practice in Mississippi, he moved to New Orleans at the beginning on 1836 and by 1854 was a member of the City Council. In 1845, Harper & Brothers published his book, New Orleans as I found it, under the pen name H. Didimus. It is comprised of a number of ―sketches of some of the incidents‖ he experienced on his ―first visit to New Orleans, in the winter of 1835- 36,‖ one of which was learning about one of the city‘s brandy cocktails: ―Now the difference between a brandy-cocktail and a brandy-toddy,‖ he wrote, ―is this: a brandy-toddy is made by adding together a little water, a little sugar, and a great deal of brandy - mix well and drink. A brandy-cocktail is composed of the same ingredients, with the addition of a shade of Stoughton‘s bitters; so that the bitters draw the line of demarcation.‖ We immediately observe from the above narrative that, if Mayor Durrell recalled his facts correctly, the ―brandy-cocktail‖ was available in the Crescent City in the winter of 1835-36, a good two years before Antoine Amédée Peychaud opened his Royal Street apothecary in 1838.

HOW IT ALL STARTED Nine thousand years ago, the Chinese mastered the art of distillation, which they used to make perfumes and essences. This knowledge spread across Asia and was introduced to the Greco- Egyptian culture of Alexander the Great, and consequently, the Roman Empire. However it was an Arab alchemist, Geber Al Jabir (721–815 AD), who invented a new type of distillation device: the al-ambiq, which could produce large quantities of pure alcohol. It was taken to Spain by the Moors and slowly began emerging from monasteries and universities, but it was not until the 16th century that most spirits were produced and consumed on a larger scale for recreational purposes. Early settlers in America took their native drinks and distilling knowledge to the new continent. By the 17th century, punches, slings, toddies and other drinks were being consumed socially, and to prevent and cure various ailments. New evidence proves the earliest published use of the word ‘cocktail’ was in a 1798 London newspaper. There are several theories of its origin, one of the most likely being a 17th century English custom where horses of mixed blood had their tails docked and were known as ‘cocktailed’ horses.
