The February General Meeting of the WCRA will be held at Rainbow Creek Station in Confederation Park in Burnaby following the AGM. In 1981, the roundhouse will soon be vacated by the railway, and the Provincial collection will move to BC Rail at North Vancouver. The Roundhouse will become a feature pavilion at Expo 86, and then be developed into today’s Roundhouse Community Centre and 374 Pavilion. By studying the CPR from an environmental perspective, it becomes obvious that the relationship between the people and the environment in the mountains was two- fold: workers had an effect on the environment through fires, deforestation, excavation, and blasting, and the environment likewise had an effect on workers through the hardships of weather, challenging terrain, avalanches, and floods. Shortcuts, such as steep grades and wooden bridges, taken by the CPR throughout construction to save money and time, as well as the poor route choice, had unintended consequences for the operation of the railway. -

In this Gary Oliver photo we see members Brian Biddlecomb, Keith Anderson, Bill Brown (top) and Martin Jergens (bottom) at CPR Drake Street on January 3, 1959 on the occasion of the last steam locomotive, CPR 4-6-2 #2709, being steamed up. #2709 was retained after the end of steam operations and used to supply shop and coach yard steam occasionally when needs required it. More on page 4-5. Entertainment will be a wonderful slide show from the David Wilkie Collection— slides of steam on Vancouver Island 1954 to 1961 taken by David Wilkie and Elwood White. This show is not to be missed! ON THE COVER Salute to the Whistler Mountaineer! The inaugural run of the new Whistler Mountaineer on May 1, 2006 was greeted at Squamish by the West Coast Railway Heritage Park, with our operating equipment lined up on our trackage parallel to the mainline. As the first train came through, there was a grand whistle salute from PGE 561, CPR FP7A #4069, and BCR RDC-3 BC 33 as well as the air horns on the Mountaineer’s GP40-2 #8019. Up the line was our speeder train. In our cover photo, WCRA member Vera Anderson is part of the group greeting the train as open observation car Henry Pickering glides by following the new Glacier Dome cars in the consist. More on page 29, Don Evans photo. Rockwalls and Waterfalls Volume #46 Summer Newsletter 2011 Happy 125th Birthday YohoNational Park a cree expression of wonder and awe was the ‘Yoho’name given to Canada’s second National Park, created on October 10, 1886. Yoho began as a 16 square kilometer reserve at the base of Mt. Stephen set aside by the Canadian government at the urging of the CPR (Canadian Pacific Railway). The discovery of Takakkaw Falls, (Cree for it is wonderful) by Jean Habel in 1897 led to the CPR, local outfitters and explorers lobbying the government for expansion of the Mt. Stephen Reserve to include the Yoho Valley. The area was added in 1901 along with the Emerald Lake area and the name changed to Yoho Park Reserve. In 1911, the Canadian government passed a bill that created a new unit in the Department of the Interior named the Dominion Parks Branch. For twenty six years lands were set aside as both reserves and parks and governed separately. Canada became the first country to create an agency that would govern all national parks. In 1930 the name was changed to National Parks Branch. Since that time Yoho’s boundaries have remained constant to include an area of 1313 square kilometers. Poster design : Rob Buchanan Yoho National Park includes the Burgess Shale Walcott– Quarry (an area with 515 million year old fossils), that became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1981 and the Canadian Pacific’s Spiral Tunnels built to lessen the grade on the Big Hill from 4.5 to 2.2%, making a much safer route for the CPR. -
