4 What do we do in Houghton when it snows?

A Copper Country Winter can be very unpre dictable. A blizzard one day could turn into sunny skies the next. One day it’s 30 degrees below zero and along comes a few days with temperatures near 40 degrees above zero. Tech students are always willing to find time for some fun, however, no matter what the weather. Winter time is a time to get out and enjoy what the Copper Country has to offer. Marcia Petsch

“It’s the busiest statue on campus,” says Grand Bocce Mike Smaby of the MTU Bocce Club. The Bocce Club statue, located next to the Library incorporates two bocce courts in its design which are used for the annual tournament held on Friday of Winter Carnival W eek. Bocce originated in Italy and is similar to lawn bowling. The MTU Bocce Club was started at Tech to promote the game of bocce and to provide fun for its members. The Win ter Carnival B occe Tournam ent is unusual in that the game is played on an ice bocce court. This year’s fifth annual tournament was a complete success with 32 teams competing for the traveling first place trophy. Some of the tournament participants included the Winter Carnival Queen and President Stein. A grill was set up right on the statue site for a winter cook-out and refreshments were pro vided for the players. This year’s tournament co-ordinator was Cathy Dopp.

28 It always happens very fast— with little warning. One day it’s a perfect, warm, fall afternoon, and the next day everything is frozen solid. However, after a few years (or months) in the Copper Country, one gets used to the fickle rise and fall in tem perature. After all, how much difference can it make if it’s 30 degrees or 10 degrees below zero?

29 Well, we may appear to com plain a lot about the cold and snow, (except when the downstaters go home, it som ehow turns into brag ging and “endu rance stories” ) but actually we do make the best of it. Hockey, dog sledding, snow- shoeing, statue building — it’s all a part of Winter Carnival!! T h e one and only snow banking event that turns ordinary people into frozen statues.

30 31 Glazed lakes, crystal coated trees, beautiful scenery, peaceful quiet, slippery roads, cars in ditches, runny noses, frost bitten fingers, cozy fire sides, cross country skiing to school, broken bones, -40 degree wind chill, “eh?”, snow, snow and more snow, we’re talking about the Copper Coun try folks, and yup! W e like it here!

47 Bill Gappy: Nine years of eager excellence.

Coach Bill Gappy’s Husky Cagers were only ranked seventh of nine teams by the G LIA C Coaches prior to this season. Last year’s National Intercollegiate Conference champions surprised everyone by battling within reach of a G LIA C title as the season progressed. Coach Gappy expressed apprehension about the Husky’s debut in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. It is, “The finest small college Basketball Conference in the M id west,” according to Gappy. Since beginning his career at M TU in 1972, Gappy has racked up an impressive 100-96 won loss record. Gappy was named NIC Coach of the Year for the 79-80 basketball season. H e be g a n his coaching career in Rochester, Michigan as assistant coach in football, basketball, and track from 1964 to 1967. At Eastern Michigan University from 1968 to 1969, he coached the freshman basketball team to a 12-3 won loss record. Then at Royal O ak Dondero Gappy led the basketball team to their first league title in 35 years. He and his wife G reta live in Houghton with their three sons.

Scott Heckel John Maclnnes: the Winningest Coach after 25 years.

In 24 seasons at M TU, Coach John Maclnnes became the winningest coach in college history. The 55 year old Mac ln n e s became one of the first two m em bers of the American Hockey Coaches Association Pinnacle Club by leading the Huskies to its 502nd win on February 2 2 , 1980. The win sur passed the record of 501 wins held by John “Snooks” Kelley at Boston College. Maclnnes has coached the Huskies to 19 winning seasons since starting at Tech. The team finished in the top four of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association 17 times. Twenty Michigan Tech players have gained All-American status under the tutelage of Maclnnes. He frequently points to the fact that 94% of his letter winners have graduated from M TU as an exam ple of the well rounded athletes on the Husky Hockey Teams. Maclnnes has been practicing his life goal of giving young men a good education as well as helping them achieve athlcti cally oriented goals since becoming Head Coach in 1 9 5 6 Maclnnes is a product of the extensive hockey program Toronto, Ontario where he was born.
