All Three Commercial Evening News Anchors Viewed Positively : PERKY AND CUTE, BUT SMART, INFORMED AND LIBERAL, TOO

Though Katie Couric has yet to take her seat as the new CBS Evening News anchor, the former Today show co-host is already a more familiar personality than her NBC and ABC counterparts. These numbers are NOT percentages. Specific accolades for the other two commercial broadcast news anchors were less about personality and style and more focused on their job performance. NBC’s Brian Williams was often summed up in a word as fair, and also as informative, knowledgeable and professional. Trustworthy was frequently offered as positive descriptor of ABC’s Charles Gibson along with informed, professional and competent.

While Katie Couric is more widely known, she also Women Know and Like receives more negatively-toned responses than do Williams Couric Best or Gibson. Results for this survey are based on telephone interviews conducted under the direction of Princeton Survey Research Associates International among a nationwide sample of 1,506 adults, 18 years of age or older, from August 9-13, 2006. The results here are based on a random half of survey respondents on Form 2 of the survey (N=775) the sampling error for percentages is plus or minus 4 percentage points.

In addition to sampling error, one should bear in mind that question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of opinion polls.
