Liturgy Update Archdiocese of New York Vol 5.1 - December 2017 Office of Liturgy LITURGY UPDATE Liturgical Memos December 24 and 25: Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas Day The Vigil for Christmas, and not the Fourth Sunday of Advent, should be celebrated at evening Masses on December 24 this year. The USCCB’s Secretariat of Divine Worship has noted that, in the opinion of most canonists, each of these days of obligation must be fulfilled with a separate Mass. December 30 and January 1: Feast of the Holy Family and Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God Inasmuch as the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God falls on a Monday in 2018 and is, therefore, Papal Motu Proprio on not a holy day of obligation, the Feast of the Holy Family should be Liturgical Translations celebrated at evening Masses on December 30, 2017. For more information, see the commentary Published in the September 2017 issue of The Holy See recently announced that Pope Francis has signed an Liturgy Update. Apostolic Letter issued motu proprio (on his own initiative) which March 17: amends a portion of the Code of Canon Law (c. 838) having to do Saint Patrick’s Day with the preparation, review, and approval of liturgical In 2018, the feast day of Saint translations. The letter, entitled Magnum principium, indicates Patrick (observed as a solemnity in that these changes are intended to clarify the respective roles of the Archdiocese of New York) falls the Apostolic See and conferences of bishops in the translation of on a Saturday in Lent.

  • Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship
Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship Letter Voluntati obsequens to bishops, accompanying the booklet Jubilate Deo, 14 April 1974 Pope Paul VI has expressed often, and even recently, the wish that the faithful of all countries be able to sing at least a few Gregorian chants in Latin (for example, the Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei)1 In compliance, this Congregation has prepared the enclosed booklet Jubilate Deo, which provides a short collection of such Gregorian chants. I have the honour and office of sending you a copy of this booklet as a gift from the Pope himself. I also take this occasion to commend to your own pastoral concerns this new measure intended to ensure the carrying out of the prescription of Vatican Council II: ‘Steps should be taken enabling the faithful to say or to sing together in Latin those parts of the Ordinary of the Mass belonging to them.’2 Whenever the faithful pray together as a community, they show at once the complex diversity of a people gathered ‘from every tribe, language, and nation’ and their unity in faith and charity. The diversity stands out in the many languages lawfully used in the liturgy and in the song settings suited to those languages. The languages and songs convey the religious spirit of each particular people, along with the identical teachings of faith; the different types of music correspond to the culture and traditions of each people. The unity of faith, on the other hand, stands out in a marked manner through the use of Latin and Gregorian chant.

  • Worship of the Eucharist Outside Mass (1973)
November 2017 Guidelines for the Worship of the Eucharist The Eucharist is a priceless treasure: by Outside of Mass not only celebrating it but also by Archdiocese of New York praying before it outside of Mass, we are enabled to make contact with the very Prepared by the Office of Liturgy wellspring of grace…. It is pleasant to spend time with [Jesus], to lie close to his breast like the Beloved Disciple (cf. Jn 13:25) and to feel the infinite love present in his heart. -Pope Saint John Paul II, Ecclesia de Eucharistia, 25 !1 November 2017 Introduction The following guidelines provide a summary of the ecclesial documentation concerning the worship of the Eucharist outside of Mass. They are intended to serve as an aid to clergy and others within the Archdiocese of New York who are entrusted with fostering the faithful's devotion to the Blessed Sacrament through eucharistic adoration, both individually and in community. Questions regarding these guidelines may be directed to the Office of Liturgy. Historical Background The practice of reserving the Eucharist is an ancient observance which has its origins in the earliest centuries of the Church's history. The first extant description of reserving the Eucharist in order to bring Holy Communion to the sick is recorded in Saint Justin Martyr's First Apology (c. 155-157). In the following century, Cyprian of Carthage described how Christians would bring the Eucharist to their homes to receive it during the week, since the celebration of the Eucharist took place only on Sundays at this point in Christian history.1 In a tradition beginning in the city of Rome, the Eucharist was sometimes reserved and then added to the Precious Blood during a later Mass celebrated in another location as a way of symbolically expressing the communion between parishes and their bishop or between various bishops.

On 24 June 2011, Most Reverend Samuel Joseph Aquila, then Bishop of Fargo, North Dakota, gave the Hillenbrand Distinguished Lecture at the Liturgical Institute of the University of St Mary of the Lake, in Mundelein, Illinois. The following is his essay based on that lecture. Bishop Aquila is one of several bishops in the United States who have in recent years restored the administration of the sacraments of initiation to their ancient order of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Holy Communion. In August 2002, after consultation with the clergy and laity, I issued a pastoral letter on the sacrament of confirmation, titled Send Forth Your Spirit, and as bishop I restored the order of the sacraments of initiation for those children baptized as Catholics in infancy.1 Education played a most important role in the process as many of the faithful were unaware of the history of the sacrament of confirmation and especially of Church teaching over the past 40 years.

  • Information Regarding Adoration
Information Regarding Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament No one can fail to see that the divine Eucharist bestows an incomparable dignity upon the Christian people. For it is not just while the Sacrifice is being offered and the Sacrament is being confected, but also after the Sacrifice has been offered and the Sacrament confected - while the Eucharist is reserved in churches or oratories - that Christ is truly Emmanuel, which means “God with us.” For He is in the midst of us day and night; He dwells in us with the fullness of grace and of truth. He raises the level of morals, fosters virtue, comforts the sorrowful, strengthens the weak and stirs up all those who draw near to Him to imitate Him, so that they may learn from His example to be meek and humble of heart, and to seek not their own interests but those of God. Anyone who has a special devotion to the sacred Eucharist and who tries to repay Christ’s infinite love for us with an eager and unselfish love of His own, will experience and fully understand - and this will bring great delight and benefit to his soul - just how precious is a life hidden with Christ in God and just how worthwhile it is to carry on a conversation with Christ, for there is nothing more consoling here on earth, nothing more efficacious for progress along the paths of holiness. • “Anglican Use of the Roman Rite”? the Unity of the Liturgy in the Diversity of Its Rites and Forms Hans-Jürgen Feulner
Antiphon 17.1 (2013): 31-72 “Anglican Use of the Roman Rite”? The Unity of the Liturgy in the Diversity of Its Rites and Forms Hans-Jürgen Feulner The internationally known German liturgist Balthasar Fischer († 2001) was rather far-sighted and somewhat euphoric, when, already in 1981, in connection with article 4 of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium, he mentioned the ecumenical dimension of the liturgy: Nowhere does reunification any longer mean—and also not in the West—the adoption of the Roman liturgy and of specifically Catholic piety.
