Für Kurdische Studien 5 (2017) Für Kurdische Jahrbuch Wiener The fifth volume of the Vienna Yearbook for Kurdish Studies reaches out to everyone interested in language, migration, and social cohesion. It is intended for students and advanced scientists, for researchers and practi- tioners likewise, and addresses a wide range of disciplines, such as linguistics and sociolinguistics, sociology and political science, social and cultural anthropology, migration, memory and genocide studies, and many more. Why is this so? The Wiener Jahrbuch reason lies in the topic itself: this is a book about Kurdish. There are only very few topics, we believe, that attract so many disciplines and refer to so many realms of human experience simultaneously. Kurdish does so already on the linguistic micro level — i.e., as a language ‘entity’. In the twinkling of an eye, the issue of Kurdish languages leads to fundamental discussions on the nature of language, language boundaries and linguistic rela- für Kurdische tionships, and further to identity, social cohesion, collective memory, and its significance for any definition of ‘language’. Only rarely are the different aspects so obviously and inescapably intertwined as in the case of Kurdish. Kurdish is thus an excellent starting point for understanding why language can never ever be analysed separately from human experience, memory, politics, social development, and social cohesion (not just) in our late modern times. Kurdish is an impressive testimony for the deep human attachment to language — since it is all but self-evident that both in oral communication and writing Kurdish has been maintained so vibrantly until today. Studien 2017 Der fünfte Band des Wiener Jahrbuchs für Kurdische Studien richtet sich an eine breite Le- serschaft mit Interesse an Sprache, Migration und sozialem Zusammenhalt, seien es Studierende oder Fortgeschrittene, Sprache – Migration – Zusammenhalt: seien es in Forschung oder Praxis Tätige. Die im Band vertretenen Disziplinen schlagen einen weiten Bogen von Lingu- 5 istik und Soziolinguistik über Soziologie und Politikwissenschaft bis hin zu Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie, Migrations- forschung, Memory und Genocide Studies und vielen mehr. Der Grund für diese Weite liegt im Gegenstand selbst: Dies Kurdisch und seine Diaspora ist ein Buch zum Kurdischen. Es gibt nur wenige Themen, so meinen wir, die in so viele Disziplinen ausstrahlen, zugleich aber auch so unmittelbar die Ebene menschlicher Erfahrung berühren wie das Kurdische. Language – Migration – Cohesion: Kurdisch tut dies bereits auf der linguistischen Mikro-Ebene, als sprachliche ‘Einheit’, von wo die Diskussion stets un- Kurdish and its Diaspora verzüglich zu fundamentalen Fragen des ‘Wesens’, der Verwandtschaften und Grenzen von Sprachen führt, und von dort weiter zu Identität, sozialem Zusammenhalt, kollektivem Gedächtnis und deren Bedeutung für jegliche Definition von Sprache. Nur selten sind die verschiedenen Aspekte so offensichtlich und unausweichlich miteinander verwoben wie im Herausgegeben von Falle des Kurdischen. Religious and linguistic minorities among the Kurds have often had an ambivalent relationship with the Kurdish movement and with Kurdish identity. Sunni Muslim speakers of Kurmanji or Sorani too have at times been willing to downplay ethnicity in the name of Muslim brotherhood with dominant Arab or Turkish state elites, but the emphasis on Islam has rarely led them to deny being Kurdish. For the minorities, on the other hand, Kurdish identity has been only one of several possible options, and political conditions have often strongly influenced which identity they prioritised. The Yezidis (Êzîdî) are a case in point: for a long time most Yezidis considered themselves as Kurds and were considered as Kurds by others – in fact it was mostly Yezidis who pioneered modern Kurdish literature and Kurdish broadcasting in Soviet Armenia – but during the past thirty years we could observe a notable move away from Kurdish identity towards a distinct Yezidi ethnicity.

(Zazai Aşireti Zazaların Kökeni Hakkında Bir Şeyler Söyleyebilir Mi?) Rasim BOZBUĞA1 Abstract The main purpose of this paper is to review bibliography and investigate relevant information about Zazai tribe and Zaza people in order to explore pos- sible connection between them. Findings about Zazas and Zazai Pastun tribe indicate that these two groups have strong connection which is more than ha- ving phonological similar names. Moreover, religious, cultural, historical re- semblances point out that these two groups share some mutual characteristics. Indeed, it is strongly possible that these two groups have originated from same ancestors or same areas (i.e. greater Khorasan or Northern Iran).     DOI: 10.7816/idil-04-16-08 idil, 2015, Cilt 4, Sayı 16, Volume 4, Issue 16 NOVUS ORTUS: THE AWAKENING OF LAZ LANGUAGE IN TURKEY Nurdan KAVAKLI 1 ABSTRACT Laz (South Caucasian) language, which is spoken primarily on the southeastern coast of the Black Sea in Turkey, is being threatened by language endangerment. Having no official status, Laz language is considered to be an ethnic minority language in Turkey. All Laz people residing in Turkey are bilingual with the official language in the country, Turkish, and use Laz most frequently in interfamilial conversations. In this article, Laz language is removed from the dusty pages of Turkish history as a response to the threat of language attrition in the world. Accordingly, language endangerment is viewed in terms of a sociolinguistic phenomenon within the boundaries of both language-internal and -external factors. Laz language revitalization acts have also been scrutinized. Having a dekko at the history of modern Turkey will enlighten whether those revitalization acts and/or movements can offer a novus ortus (new birth) for the current situation of Laz language. Kurdish Nationalism and Competing Ethnic Loyalties Martin van Bruinessen During the past decade and a half, Kurdish nationalism has scored some remarkable political successes — be it at a terrible cost. For most of our century, Kurdish nationalism remained the concern of a relatively small educated elite, that from time to time entered into ephemeral alliances with local chieftains or religious leaders, resulting in short-lived rebellions of limited geographical scope. In recent years, however, Kurdish nationalism has become a mass movement in all parts of Kurdistan, with an appeal that transcends state boundaries as well as regional differences. While on the one hand Kurdish nationalism has consolidated itself and awakened a widespread awareness of common identity, differences within Kurdish society on the other hand have at the same time become more divisive than they were before. Iraqi Kurdistan in 1994 appears torn between its Kurmanci-speaking northern part and the Sorani-speaking south, roughly coinciding with the zones of influence of the two major Kurdish parties, KDP and PUK, with a neutral zone in the middle. In Iran, the nationalist parties, KDP-I and Komala, have always found their strongest support in the relatively urbanised, Sorani-speaking region from Mahabad to Sanandaj and they were during the 1980's actually fought by Kurmanci-speaking tribesmen from further north as well as Shi`i Kurds to their south. Abstract The volume Disentangling Bare Nouns and Nominals Introduced by a Partitive Article, edited by Tabea Ihsane, focuses on different aspects of the distribution, semantics, and internal structure of nominal constituents with a “partitive article” in its indefinite interpretation and of potentially corresponding bare nouns. It further deals with diachronic issues, such as grammaticalization and evolution in the use of “partitive articles”. The outcome is a snapshot of current research into “partitive articles” and the way they relate to bare nouns, in a cross-linguistic perspective and on new data: the research covers noteworthy data (fieldwork data and corpora) from Standard languages - like French and Italian, but also German - to dialectal and regional varieties, including endangered ones like Francoprovençal.
