The Labor Day Weekend It’s hard to believe that summer is almost at an end and that another Labor Day weekend is upon us. The Beacher staff would like to take this opportunity to say… Thanks to ALL the advertisers and to our faithful readers who support them.
Labor Day Labor Day is observed throughout the United States in recogni- tion of the dignity of labor, falling on the first Monday in September each year. Labor organizations sponsor various velebrations, but for most is is a day of rest. It also has become a symbol of the end of sum- mer. Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, May 18, 1882, at a central Labor Union meet- ing in New York City, proposed that “a day be set aside as a festive day, during which parade through the streets of the city would per- mit public tribute to American industry.” The motion was adopted and plans for the first Labor Day celebration made. On Sept. 5th of that year, workers staged the first Labor Day parade in New York City. October 7, 1884, American Federation of Labor meeting at Chicago, A.C. Cameron, member of the Typographical Union 16 introduced the following resolution: “Resolved, That the first Monday in September each year be set aside as a laborers’ national holiday, and that we recommend its observance by all wage workers, irrespective of sex, calling or nationality.” In 1887, Oregon became the first state to make Labor Day a legal holiday, followed the same year by Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York. By 1890 Connecticut, Nebraska and Pennsylvania had followed suit. In 1894 President Grover Cleveland signed a bill making Labor Day an official legal holiday for the whole country. World Wide Celebrations Labor Day is also observed as a legal holiday on the first Monday in September in Puerto Rico and Canada. In Australia, Labor Day is called Eight Hour Day, and commemorates the successful strug- gle for a shorter working day. The Australian holiday varies from state to state. In Europe, Labor Day is May 1. August 30, 2001 Page 3
Off the Book Shelf Open ‘til 7 p.m. by Sally Carpenter Evenings
To readers who have spent the last year or so immersed in the Harry Potter phenomenon, let me just say “Hello out there!” There are other authors and other books to capture the attention of your child (and you). One of them is Artemis Fowl by Irish author Eoin www.littlehousefashions.comElegant Apparel for the [email protected] Conscious Woman (pronounced Owen) Colfer. The book has only been out Women’s Apparel since May and is already gathering a fowling (oops, I mean a following). It is suggested for “young adults” and I can see parents reading this book after their chil- dren because, like Harry Potter, it is a fresh read, a quick read and takes you away from the ordinary. Artemis Fowl is not your ordinary 12 year old boy. First of all he is a boy genius who lives on a huge estate outside of Dublin and his family fortune seems to have A Complete been first established by less than legitimate means (smuggling, racketeering, etc.), although in this cen- tury they seem to have gone in more for corporate crime; Collection much more civilized, don’t you think? Anyway, now his father has disappeared, his mother is delusional, suffering from depression and is bed-ridden, the We Have family fortune is going down the tubes—- but Artemis has a scheme to make a lot of money fast. He is going to kidnap a fairy and hold it for ran- Every Piece som, because everyone knows how all fairies have a love of gold and their own personal horde of the pre- in Every Print cious metal. The problem is, Artemis picks up a LEPrecon, (a member of an elite branch of the Lower Offered Elements Police reconnaissance unit) named Captain Holly Short (pun intended?). Anyway, we get a glimpse into the underground world of the wee people who, by the way, don’t wear buckled shoes and knickerbockers Great Gift anymore. They have a high tech society in the mid- dle of the earth and try to stay out of the way of the Ideas Mud People (us). There is also a wise-cracking satyr, a man-eating troll, a tunnel-burrowing dwarf and lots of elves and fairies. What ensues is a bit of James Bond-type storytelling, even the author describes it as “Die Hard with fairies,” as well as lots of fantasy and science fiction, and a fair amount of humor, but the character of Artemis Fowl remains duplicitous. He is more of an anti-hero, albeit a sometimes loveable one. So, you decide: I think this book is one you will either love or hate. Miramax has plans to put Artemis Fowl on the big Summer Tent Sale screen sometime next year and Eoin Colfer is in the midst of writing a sequel. One of the more familiar photo portraits of Hoagy Carmichael. The Hoosier Musician played a part in To Have and Have Not with Lauren Bacall. Many confuse the film with Casablanca. For the record, Hoagy did not play it again, The Hoagy Carmichael Room is located in Morrison Hall on the I.U. Sam. Campus. Admission is free, but a call to the Archives of Traditional Music ahead of your visit will save you from disappointment, because the room is kept locked.
Say hoagy, and a younger generation thinks of a sub- marine sandwich. Another generation, however, is well aware of Hoagy Carmichael and his music. A younger gener- ation knows that Ray Charles’ vocal, “Georgia on My Mind. But another generation knows that Hoagy Carmichael is the person who wrote it. Of course, it is “Star Dust” that he is most remem- bered for. The down-home Hoosier scratched out the first few bars of the tune at the Book Nook, later known as The Gables, (now a pizzeria) an eatery directly across the street from the Law School. Hoagland Howard Carmichael was born in Bloomington in 1899 and he attended Indiana University. So it is no surprise that the stellar Hoosier songwriter would have a small museum on the I.U. campus dedicated to his life in and out of the lime- light. Located in Morrison Hall of the former women’s res- idences of Wells Quadrangle, Hoagy’s room occupies a former dining area, but a newcomer would never know it. Today the room more resembles a formal, carpet- ed reception area. A fireplace sits on one end of the Hoagy owned nine pianos. A member of Kappa Sigma fraternity, Hoagy pulled together a group of musi- cians he called Carmichael’s Collegians and they became a big hit not only on campus, but also around the region. Hoagy discovered Bix Beiderbecke and brought his band, The Wolverines, to I.U. The result was a booming jazz craze on campus. “After dances… the bands played serenades. These started at the Book Nook where we gath- ered and loaded the Book Nook piano on a truck. The truck and cortege of cars and pedes- trians made the rounds of sorority houses from there. While mother Lida played ragtime at var- ious venues, a young Hoagy tagged along. For a few years the family lived in Indianapolis, and during that time Hoagy, still a teenager, got to know Reggie DuValle, a black jazz pianist who influenced the blooming composer’s emerging interest in jazz. Other big names in the jazz medium during his formative years, namely Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke, would make a resounding and life-long impression on Hoagy. The Indiana songwriter admired Bix but con- sidered himself a “totally inadequate” cornet player. Bix, a masterful cornet player from Davenport, caught Hoagy’s ear and a lasting friendship, too. Even before penning “Star Dust”, Hoagy wrote his first tune for Bix, titled “Free Wheeling.” Bix recorded the tune with his band, The Wolverines, in Richmond Indiana where it was retitled, “Riverboat Shuffle.” Three years later in 1927, Hoagy made a trip to Richmond to record his “Star Dust”. The original tune was Many people are unaware that Hoagy had been a lawyer—for a short time. His 1926 diploma is on view at the little museum. Back then, a law wordless, up-tempo, and jazzy. Some of his most memorable songs were a collaboration between Hoagy and Johnny Mercer, and Hoagy and Frank Loesser.
Mildred Perkins, who gave the tour of the Hoagy Room at I.U., said that this charcoal portrait of Hoagy was purportedly the inspiration for the James Bond character. Hoagy passed away in 1981 and his grave is in Bloomington. Anyone can access his document archives, including sound bites of some of the musi- cian’s early works at the Archives of Traditional Music website (www.dlib.indiana.edu/collections/hoagy). Both sets of my grandparents came from Eastern Golf + Fun = Briar Leaf! Europe and border changes during their lives were common.. I was sure of my Polish and German roots on my father’s side but had few clues about my moth- er’s family. For years I had the impression I was Russian or Ukrainian, until I happened upon my late uncle’s memoirs. And here is where the number one rule of genealogy research begins: Ask your older family members to relate all they can tell you about their early lives, and what their parents related to them. And do it now. And write it down so that you won’t forget it. My uncle left the name of a village, Cigelka, in what country I had not a clue. He also noted my grandmother’s maiden name, as best as he could spell it. Those pieces of information opened whole new worlds of knowl- edge to me, and it began as I typed in “Cigelka” on the Google search engine. Turns out that the little vil- lage of my grandmother’s birth is also in the Carpathian Mountains, but not in the Ukraine. The little vil- lage is in present-day Slovakia, probably a four-hour drive from Vinogrado (where Florian’s group goes). Luckily for me, I have found at least four Web sites dedicated to tracing the roots of my Carpatho- Rusyn heritage. Knowing a teensy bit of a Slavic language has helped, too, although you can auto- matically download a pan-European translator on your computer for help. It’s something that pops up auto- matically when you reach a URL written in a foreign language, and it gives you a choice to download, or not. I am certain that my background is not the most complicated to trace, but it has to be close. No easy English roots, no Mayflower, no D.A.R. The Rusyns,

For the 3rd year, the museum will be offer- ing steamboat rides on “Duck Lake.” This year the Hesston Steam Museum is proud to feature two very rare steam traction engines. Everyone has heard of tractors made by Allis Chalmers, Oliver, Ford, Case and John Deere, but there were numer- ous smaller and lesser-known manufacturers of steam traction engines. Sadly, most of the manufacturers and their engines have disappeared from the American scene. In front of the Silent Auction tent, Natalie Paulson proudly twirled her red parasol. Her mother, Stephanie Paulson, and grandmother, Marge Hurley of Long Beach thought she would make a good picture (which she did!). Mom Stephanie later bought a bee from Clyde Creel’s and Betsy North’s “Metaling Minds” booth. A large, free-standing black flower sculpture there caught my eye. At one of the many jewelry booths, one woman tried to decide which jewelry she should purchase. The merit schol- arships will be awarded primarily on the basis of standardized test results. The benefactor, who wish- es to remain anonymous, asked that the awards be made to academically gifted students so they can enjoy an enriched, top-level education. Renaissance Academy, the only non-denomina- tional private elementary school in the area, is begin- ning its third year. “Originally, we sought to offer schol- arships primarily on the basis of financial need,” said School Director Kieran McHugh. “But we learned that many academically gifted students really need the superior educational opportunities available at Renaissance Academy, regardless of their family’s finances.” Parents who wish to learn more, or to apply for a merit scholarship, should phone Kieran McHugh at 878-8711. Renaissance Academy is located at 4093 W. U. S. 20, Michigan City.

There’s a new kid on the block at the Michigan City Farmers’ Market: RJ’s Gourmet Garlic, with a stun- ning variety of garlics and shallots. Roy Navardauskas, owner of RJ’s based in Portage, gave me directions to his garlic shed so I could see how these beauties came to be. I drove to his cozy, rambling brown shingled house, with lovely greenery all around it as well as a wide meandering board fence. I was greeted by Roy and his wife Lisa and led to the backyard gate. Well, when it opened, I was struck speechless. As far as the eye can see, there are gardens — rustic ones, not formal ones, pieces of sculpture, cages for various bunnies and other animals, and heaps and heaps of collectibles. There are walls built of stone and brick, lawn decorations made with ceramic tiles and cement balls, and pieces of old appliances made into planters. I was so stunned by my surroundings, it took me a while to remember A salvaged yard ornament, one of many in RJ’s backyard. what I was doing there. But all around the room are other collectibles, stacked to the ceiling, such as an old 50s kitchen table with inlaid apple-design, bright shiny red and white. A chest of drawers, wedged in among other items, rests behind his “desk” chair. Hundreds and hundreds of used items all around. Truly amazing. Oh, yes, back to the garlic shed — it is made of thrown-out shutters, which makes an attrac- tive exterior wall surface, and I suppose helps circulate the air inside. Great idea.

Outside his young son’s bedroom window Roy has built an enclosing stone wall interspersed with squares of marble and natural tiles, a handmade stone bench, a fountain platform – it looks like the perfect secret place for a seven-year-old.
