Chinatown and Urban Redevelopment: a Spatial Narrative of Race, Identity, and Urban Politics 1950 – 2000
CHINATOWN AND URBAN REDEVELOPMENT: A SPATIAL NARRATIVE OF RACE, IDENTITY, AND URBAN POLITICS 1950 – 2000 BY CHUO LI DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Landscape Architecture in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2011 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor D. Fairchild Ruggles, Chair Professor Dianne Harris Associate Professor Martin Manalansan Associate Professor Faranak Miraftab Abstract The dissertation explores the intricate relations between landscape, race/ethnicity, and urban economy and politics in American Chinatowns. It focuses on the landscape changes and spatial struggles in the Chinatowns under the forces of urban redevelopment after WWII. As the world has entered into a global era in the second half of the twentieth century, the conditions of Chinatown have significantly changed due to the explosion of information and the blurring of racial and cultural boundaries. One major change has been the new agenda of urban land planning which increasingly prioritizes the rationality of capital accumulation. The different stages of urban redevelopment have in common the deliberate efforts to manipulate the land uses and spatial representations of Chinatown as part of the socio-cultural strategies of urban development. A central thread linking the dissertation’s chapters is the attempt to examine the contingent and often contradictory production and reproduction of socio-spatial forms in Chinatowns when the world is increasingly structured around the dynamics of economic and technological changes with the new forms of global and local activities. Late capitalism has dramatically altered city forms such that a new understanding of the role of ethnicity and race in the making of urban space is required. -
Project Scope Why Is This Work Necessary? How Will This Benefit Red Line Riders?
Red Line South Track Renewal project Cermak-Chinatown to 95th Street Spring/Summer 2013 CTA is planning to rebuild the South Red Line from just north of Cermak-Chinatown to 95th Street. The work will benefit Red Line riders for decades to come—through faster travel times, increased reliability, and spruced-up stations with a variety of improvements. As part of the project, in Spring/Summer 2013 the Red Line will be completely closed from Roosevelt Road to 95th Street for five months. CTA will offer several alternative travel options during this closure to minimize the impact on customers as much as possible (see other side of this page). Cermak- Faster travel times Better reliability Improved stations Chinatown Project scope CTA will replace all of the ties, rails, third rails, drainage system and ballast (the stone material that holds the ties in place) in the Red Line right of way. Additionally, all nine stations along the Dan Ryan Branch will be improved, from basic enhancements like new paint and better lighting Sox-35th to additional customer amenities, like new benches and bike racks. New elevators will be installed at the Garfield, 63rd and 87th Street stations—making the entire South Red Line fully accessible. 47th Garfield Why is this work necessary? The Dan Ryan Branch was built in 1969, when Richard Nixon was in the White House, a gallon 63rd of gas cost 35 cents and Gale Sayers won the NFL rush- ing title. The original tracks are well beyond their expected Dan Ryan terminal dedication 1969 lifespan, and call for a complete replacement. -

BOOK II Bell History and Strategies
The Unauthorized Bio Of The Baby Bells 88 BOOK II Bell History and Strategies: Shareholders First, Customers Last What does the Star Wars' Evil Empire and Bell Atlantic Have in Common? James Earl Jones was the Voice of Darth Vadar and is the Voice Of Bell Atlantic— Are There Other Commonalties? The Unauthorized Bio Of The Baby Bells 89 "Food For Thought" Interlude— Conspiracy or Miscalculation? Book 1 leaves us with a serious dilemma, especially about the I-Way. First, we know straightforwardly that the plans were all scrapped and the announced services were never delivered. But we are left with wondering how both the telephone companies as well as their consultants, were so wrong. Let's look at the options: There were three massive errors in judgment: • Mistakes in the costs of rolling out the network • Mistakes in overestimating demand • Mistakes by the research/consulting suppliers Let's walk through each one: • Mistakes in the Costs of Rolling Out the Network: The original cost model for the I-Way was estimated at around $1,200 per household. However, Bell Atlantic stated that the cost of their trials came to $16,000 per line. This includes the cost of the various Info Highway components in the home, described earlier, as well as the cost of the fiber- optic networks. But, that's a difference per line of 1233%. Of course there are caveats. Most importantly, that the trickle of a rollout was only a "test" of advanced services, and with larger volumes of users, the costs would decline. In fact, Bell Atlantic's original plans may have actually called for a great deal less spending than $1,200 a line. -

Merchant Category Codes
Merchant Category Codes MasterCard, Visa, and online debit card networks (card types 013-018, 021-027, and 029- 030) use a 4-digit numeric merchant category code (MCC) to identify the type of business conducted by a merchant. Merchant category codes are used when a new merchant account is added to the System. They are also used in warning bulletins, authorizations, chargebacks, settlement, and in certain types of transactions classified as “quasi-cash” transactions by Visa. Merchant category groups (MCGs) are used with the Commercial Market Analysis product and are general categories under which merchant category codes fall. The System recognizes the following seven merchant category groups when generating the Commercial Market Analysis Reports. MasterCard also requires a single-letter transaction category code (TCC) to identify general merchant categories. The transaction category codes follow. Merchant Category Group Description MCG Code Travel 1 Lodging 2 Dining and entertainment 3 Vehicle expenses 4 Office services and merchandise 5 Cash advance 6 Other 7 MasterCard regulations formerly referred to merchant category codes as Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes.
