Increasing Access to Quality Early Learning and Child Care for Nova Scotians
In 2018, Nova Scotia signed a three-year, $35 million child care funding agreement that increases access to regulated child care for child and families. The agreement also helps our regulated child care sector meet the needs of their communities.
Strategic Growth Initiative $350,000 to 3 new and 1 existing regulated child care centres to create 127 new spaces: • 62 spaces in Cape Breton County • 33 spaces in Cumberland County • 32 spaces in Victoria County Total 127 Spaces: 24 infant spaces, 40 toddler spaces, 44 pre-school spaces, and 19 before-and-after pre-primary spaces
Space Conversion Grant $1.4 million in Space Conversion Grant funding to 21 regulated childcare centres to create 276 new spaces: • 4 spaces in Annapolis county • 18 spaces in Cape Breton county • 204 spaces in Halifax county • 10 spaces in Hants county • 8 spaces in Kings county • 6 spaces in Lunenburg county • 14 spaces in Queens county • 12 spaces in Yarmouth county Total 276 Spaces: 46 infant spaces, 203 toddler spaces, and 27 before-and-after pre-primary spaces
Program Enhancement Grant $2.7 million in Program Enhancement Grants for non-profit child care centres to make minor repairs and renovations, replace equipment, or purchase new materials to support high-quality, inclusive programming: • 2 centres in Annapolis county • 2 centres in Inverness county • 1 centre in Antigonish county • 8 centres in Kings county • 8 centres in Cape Breton county • 10 centres in Lunenburg county • 5 centres in Colchester county • 1 centre in Pictou county • 4 centres in Cumberland county • 1 centre in Queens county • 3 centres in Digby county • 2 centres in Richmond county • 54 centres in Halifax county • 1 centre in Shelburne county • 4 centres in Hants county • 2 centres in Yarmouth county
