EXPLANATION AND GLOSSARY School Section: the basic unit of area into which the province is divided for purposes of public school education and the administration of the public school system. Sections with no schools in operation are not listed in this Directory. Rural School Section: a section in which one full-time teacher only is employed. Village School Section: a non-urban section in which more than one full-time teacher is employed (in one or more than one school). Consolidated School Section: a section formed by the union of two or more school sections for the iurose of providing educational facilities in a consolidated school (or schools) for all the children of specified grades in all the uniting sections. (The uniting sections become inoj)erativ’2 individually and combine to create one new consolidated section.) School District: the area formed by the union of two or more rural or village school sections with a municipality for the provision of educational facilities for some of the pupils in the uniting sections. (The uniting sections continue to exist; their schools, administered by the municipal school boards, inovide individually for the education of the remaining pupils of the respective sections.) Urban School Section: a city or town as organized for the provision of educational facilities for the pupils of the city or town. Regional School District: a school district established to provide educational facilities in a city or town for some or all of the pupils in the city or town and in one or more than one adjacent “rural” municipality. Municipality: There are 66 municipal units in Nova Scotia—two cities, 40 towns and 24 non-urban or “rural” municipalities. (The non- urban areas of 12 of the province’s 18 counties—e.g., Annapolis County and Antigonish County—make up 12 of the rural municipalities; in each of the six remaining counties there are two rural municipal districts— e.g., the Municipality of the District of Argyle, the Municipality of the District of Yarmouth and the Municipality of the Town of Yarmouth together make up the County of Yarmouth; the Municipality of the Dis trict of Barrington, the Municipality of the District of Shelburne and the urban municipalities of the towns of Clark’s Harbour, Lockeport and Shelburne constitute Shelburne County.) Rural, village, consolidated, and district schools (the latter including district higth schools, rural high schools, municipal high schools) are administered by “rural” municipal school boards; regional schools are administered by regional school boards; urban schools are administered by city and town boards of school commissioners. 4 Some counties are divided geographically for school purposes; e.g., Annapolis East and Annapolis West; Coichester North, Coichester South, and Coichester West. (This type of division now has no particular signifi cance in educational administration.) Number of Teachers includes superintendents or supervisors of schools, principals of schools, academic teachers and teachers of auxiliary classes and special subjects such as art, home economics, industrial arts, music, physical education, but not substitute teachers. “P” (fifth column of Directory) represents “The Primary Grade”. Primary to Grade 6 inclusive are elementary grades. Grades 7-9 are junior high school grades. Grades 10-12 are senior high school grades. N.B.: The number of pupils enrolled, the number of teachers employed, and even the number of sections in operation may vary appreciably throughout the school year. The statistics in this Directory may therefore not tally exactly with the statistics in the Annual Report of the Depart ment of Education for the corresponding school year. The figures in this Directory are not to be taken as official for statistical purposes.
