MANAGEMENT OF CONSTRUCTION AND DEMOLITION DEBRIS QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE

Construction and Demolition (C&D) debris is estimated to account for 25 to 30% of the entire waste stream. In Nova Scotia, this is approximately 175,000 to 200,000 tonnes of C&D debris disposed per year. C&D materials have what some call embodied energy. This is potential energy and resource savings that are lost if C&D debris is disposed of in a landfill.

Below is a list of facilities approved to receive C&D debris for disposal or transfer. Sorting requirements/options may vary by location. To be prepared, please consider calling aheadprior to arriving at a disposal facility, to determine disposal/recycling options and if tipping fees will apply.

Tipping fee options might include mixed C&D debris, mixed wood, clean wood (no coatings), clean drywall, metal, asphalt shingles, asbestos, tires, cardboard, etc. Additional details on sorting requirements including disposal bans can also be found in the Management Guide for Construction and Demolition Debris at http://www.wastecheck.ca/CD_Debris_Management_Guide.html
