Our Savior Lutheran Church The Third Sunday after Pentecost June 13, 2021 10:00 a.m.

CALL TO WORSHIP “Hallelujah for the Cross” by King & Wright arr. Galbraith & Iula Up to the hill of Calvary my Savior went courageously and there He bled and died for me. Hallelujah for the cross. And on that day the world was changed, a final, perfect Lamb was slain. Let earth and heaven now proclaim: Hallelujah for the cross. (chorus) Hallelujah for the war He fought. Love has won, death has lost. Hallelujah, for the souls He bought. Hallelujah for the cross. What I have done could never save; my debt too great for deeds to pay. But, God my Savior made a way. Hallelujah for the cross. A slave to sin, my life was bound. But, all my chains fell to the ground when Jesus’ blood came flowing down. Hallelujah for the cross. (chorus) And when I breathe my final breath I’ll have no need to fear that rest. This hope will guide me into death. Hallelujah for the cross. (chorus x2) Hallelujah for the cross. Hallelujah for the cross.

WELCOME & THEME (stand) OPENING SONG “He Knows My Name” by Tommy Walker I have a Maker, He formed my heart; Before even time began, my life was in His hand. (chorus) He knows my name; He knows my ev’ry thought; He sees each tear that falls, and hears me when I call. I have a Father, He calls me His own; He’ll never leave me, no matter where I go. (chorus) (instrumental) (chorus x2)

INVOCATION & OPENING PRAYER (sit) OLD TESTAMENT Genesis 4:1-16 1Adam lay with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With 2 the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man.” Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3In the course of time Cain brought some of 4 the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. But Abel brought fat portions from some of the 5 firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. 6 7 Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.” 8Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. 9 Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” (continued→)

10 The LORD said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. 11Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.” 13 14 Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is more than I can bear. Today You are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from Your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” 15 But the LORD said to him, “Not so; if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times 16 over.” Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. So Cain went out from the LORD’s presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

HOLY GOSPEL Mark 4:1-9 1Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around Him was so large that He got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge. 2He taught them many things by parables, and in His teaching said: 3“Listen! A farmer went out to sow His seed. 4As He was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7Other seed fell among the thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. 8Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, multiplying thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times.” 9 Then Jesus said, “He who has ears to hear, let him listen.”

CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION

SERMON SONG “Grace Like Rain” by Collins, Excell, Newton, & Agnew Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now I’m found was blind but now I see so clearly. (chorus) And hallelujah grace like rain falls down on me. And hallelujah and all my stains are washed away; they’re washed away. ‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved. How precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed. (chorus) When we’ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, We’ve no less days to sing Your praise than when we’ve first begun. (chorus x3)

SERMON “Cain and Abel” GENESIS: REINFORCING THE FOUNDATION

(stand) PRAYERS & LORD’S PRAYER When the pastor says, “Oh, give thanks to the Lord for He is good,” the congregation responds, “His steadfast love endures forever.” P Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who taught us to pray, C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

APOSTLES’ CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE WORDS OF OUR LORD P Our LORD Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

SHARING OF THE PEACE P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C And also with you. (sit) DISTRIBUTION In accordance with Holy Scripture, and out of loving concern for all, we believe in the biblical practice of Close Communion. This means, those are welcome to the Lord’s Table who believe the basic teachings of the Lutheran church listed below: 1. Have been instructed in God’s Word, especially in regard to the Apostles’ Creed, Ten Commandments and Holy Sacraments; 2. Confess and repent of all their sins; 3. Believe that in and with the bread and wine, they receive in a miraculous way, not merely a symbol, but the true body and blood of Christ, for the forgiveness of their sins and the strengthening of their faith; 4. Recognize that participation at His table indicates a public agreement with the Biblical teaching of the Sacrament as we teach and confess, and a oneness in faith with fellow communicants. If you have any questions, we respectfully ask you to visit with one of the pastors before receiving Holy Communion.
