The Issue Regarding
ZAPISKI HISTORYCZNE — TOM LXXIX — ROK 2014 Zeszyt 4 http://dx.doi.org/10.15762/ZH.2014.16 TOMASZ KEMPA (Toruń) THE ISSUE REGARDING “THE REFORM OF THE UNION” OF LUBLIN IN LITHUANIAN POLICY IN THE PERIOD OF THREE INTERREGNA FOLLOWING THE DEATH OF KING SIGISMUND AUGUSTUS (1572–1588) Key words: the Union of Lublin, particularism, interregnum, the Grand Duchy of Lithua- nia, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth In 1569 a new Polish-Lithuanian union was concluded in Lublin; the union strengthened the political, economic and cultural relationship between the Polish Crown and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Both states were united in Krewo in 1385. Nevertheless, until 1569, the union was mostly personal – based on the sta- ble rule of the Jagiellons. In Lublin it was converted into a closer federation of the two countries (both of which kept their names and territory) united from that moment on not only by one monarch elected by both Poles and Lithuanians, but also by one common noble parliament, common foreign policy and defence, the same monetary system (with distinct state treasuries) and similar administrative structures1. Th us, in Polish historiography the Union of Lublin is referred to as the real union to emphasise the fact of there being a variety of real bonds connecting the two states and nations2. On the other hand, the circumstances of the conclusion of the new union in- fl uenced the divergent attitudes of the Poles and Lithuanians and aff ected the rela- tions between the nations, which is refl ected even in present times. Th at is why the circumstances and the fi nal outcome of the negotiations in Lublin should be re- called here since they determined the policy carried out by the Lithuanians during the interregna and following the death of the last Jagiellon on the Polish-Lithua- nian throne. -

Meletii Smotryts´kyi (ca. 1577‑1633) belonged to the next generation, was an archbishop, and the author of a popular Slavic grammar and a series of polemical works. Their biographies reflect the hesitations of both generations. Their writings show the tension between polemics and the pursuit of theological re‑conceptualization which was characteristic of an early‑modern borderland society. -

Dariusz Milewski Between a Magnate and a Cossack : Two Marriages of Vasile Lupu’S Daughters
Dariusz Milewski Between a magnate and a Cossack : two marriages of Vasile Lupu’s daughters Series Byzantina 6, 45-64 2008 Series Byzantina VI, pp. 45-64 Between a Magnate and a Cossack - - Two Marriages o f Vasile Lupu’s Daughters Dariusz Milewski, Warsaw In 1645 and 1652 the Moldavian hospodar Vasile Lupu arranged the marriages of his two daughters, Mary and Rosande, with the Lithuanian chamberlain, future voivod of Vilnius and Great Lithuanian Hetman Janusz Radziwiłł, and with Tymofiy (Tymish) Khmelnytsky, the son of the leader of the Cossack Revolt, who was considered in the Lithuanian-Polish Commonwealth and Moldavia as an inciter of peasant rebels. A real abyss divides the two marriages, contracted within only seven years. The first one, en tered into voluntarily and based upon the common aim of both sides to overcome political difficulties, brought respectability to both the hospodar and the Lithuanian magnate. At the same time it could be considered as a sign of the growing interest of the powerful Lithuanian-Polish Commonwealth in the Danubian region. The second marriage, forced on the hospodar, marked the beginning of the end of Polish influence in Moldavia and made apparent the weakness of the Lithuanian-Polish Commonwealth, which could no longer defend its Moldavian ally against the Cossacks. Both marriages were arranged be cause of political reasons - therefore their comparison would be an interesting attempt to look more closely at the political and cultural circumstances of the Lithuanian-Polish Commonwealth and Moldavia in the middle of the 17th century. The territory of the Moldavian hospodars, which had flourished during the times of Stephen the Great (1457-1504), came under Turkish influence; after the failure of the hos podar Petru Rareş in 1538 Moldavia was forced to accept an unfavorable tributary treaty and the loss of its south-eastern part, which began to be called Budziak. -
Articles the Attitude of Ruthenian Magnates
ZAPISKI HISTORYCZNE — TOM LXXXIV — ROK 2019 Zeszyt 4 Articles http://dx.doi.org/10.15762/ZH.2019.36 TOMASZ KEMPA (Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń) The Attitude of Ruthenian Magnates and Nobles toward the Union of Lublin (1569) and the Problem of the Autonomy of Ukrainian Lands* within the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Key words: magnates, nobles, Ruthenia, Ukraine, Union of Lublin, law, Orthodoxy, Po lonization, Catholicization The Polish-Lithuanian Union, signed in Lublin in 1569, has long aroused great interest among successive generations of historians. It is caused not only by the importance of this event, but also by the fact the Union was being con- sidered through the prism of historical debate, which was contested among Poles and Lithuanians in the era of the Sejm of Lublin and also after its con- clusion. This approach to the problem ensured that scholars often overlooked the important issue of the attitude towards the Union of Lublin of the Ruthe- nian nobility from the Ukrainian lands, which, before 1569, belonged to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and which were incorporated into the Kingdom of Poland at the Union of Lublin in 1569. All these territories had much in * The term ‘Ukraine’ (or the ‘Ukrainian lands’) usually referred the Kyiv and Bratslav voivodeships in the last decades of the 16th and in the first half of the 17th century. Volhynia was treated as a separate region. After incorporating the land of Chernihiv into the Commonwealth (after the war with Muscovy in 1619), it was also considered as a part of the Ukrainian lands. -
Non De Fide, Sed De Securitate Pacis.1 Faith and Politics in the Views of Protestants in the Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth, 1631‑32
Odrodzenie i Reformacja w Polsce PL ISSN 0029‑8514 Special Issue Urszula Augustyniak (Warsaw) Non de Fide, Sed de Securitate Pacis.1 Faith and Politics in the Views of Protestants in the Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth, 1631‑32 Traditionally, political views of Polish Protestants are investigated in the context of struggle for the so‑called religious tolerance, although at the time the Warsaw Confederation was regarded not as an ‘edict of tolera‑ tion’ but a guarantee of estate privileges and a principle of the political system of the Commonwealth. Mirosław Korolko’s analysis of political arguments used in the controversy over the Confederation2 – on a par with denominational, historiosophical, legal and socio‑economic argu‑ mentation – does not explain the relation between propaganda activity and actual attitudes of Protestants as citizens. Different from Catholic, the views of Polish and Lithuanian Protes‑ tants on the relationship between religion and politics – for instance, on the genesis of monarchical power and its obligations towards the state, the subordination of the clergy to general laws, the right of the subjects to resist edicts in conflict with the laws of God – were the result of doctrinal premises formulated in the twentieth chapter of John Calvin’s Institutio religionis christianae3 and in the Sandomierz 1 A. S. Radziwiłł, Memoriale rerum gestarum in Polonia 1632‑1656, ed. by A. Przyboś and R. Żelewski, Wrocław, 1968, vol. 1, p. 85: a quote from the polemics of K. Radziwiłł and M. The Triumphant Genealogical Awareness of the Nobility In
LITHUANIAN HISTORICAL STUDIES 22 2018 ISSN 1392-2343 PP. 29–49 THE TRIUMPHANT GENEALOGICAL AWARENESS OF THE NOBILITY IN THE GRAND DUCHY OF LITHUANIA IN THE 17TH AND 18TH CENTURIES Agnė Railaitė-Bardė (Lithuanian Institute of History) ABSTRACT This article attempts to show how the manifestation of ancestors was expressed in the genealogical awareness of the nobility in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, using publications to mark special occasions in the 17th and 18th centuries, genealogical trees and diagrams. The research seeks to establish what effect the exaltation of various battles had on the genealogical memory of the nobility in the Grand Duchy, bearing in mind the context of its involvement in one of the most famous battles it ever fought. The genealogical sources mentioned were examined in order to ascertain which battles and what memories of the commanders who fought in them were important to the genealogical awareness of the nobility, and why this memory was selective, for some battles and notable heroes from these battles are remembered and glorified, while others are simply forgotten. Memories of which battles were important to the genealogical presentation of certain families, how was it expressed, and in what period were the ancestors who participated in these battles remembered? The first part of the study presents the memory of ancestors as soldiers, and the ways this memory was expressed. The second part focuses on an- cestors who distinguished themselves in specific battles, and which family members who participated in battles are remembered and honoured, in this way distinguishing them from other ancestors. KEYWORDS: Grand Duchy of Lithuania; nobility; genealogical awareness; militaristic; heraldry. -
Warfare, State and Society on the Black Sea Steppe, 1500-1700
Warfare, State and Society on the Black Sea Steppe, 1500–1700 In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries Muscovy waged a costly struggle against the Crimean Khanate, the Ottoman Empire, and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth for control of the fertile steppe above the Black Sea. This was a region of great strategic and economic importance – arguably the pivot of Eurasia at the time. Yet, this crucial period in Russia’s history has, up until now, been neglected by historians. Brian L. Davies’s study provides an essential insight into the emergence of Russia as a great power. The long campaign took a great toll upon Russia’s population, economy, and institutions, and repeatedly frustrated or redefi ned Russian military and diplo- matic projects in the West. The struggle was every bit as important as Russia’s wars in northern and central Europe for driving the Russian state-building process, forcing military reform and shaping Russia’s visions of Empire. Warfare, State and Society on the Black Sea Steppe, 1500–1700 examines the course of this struggle and explains how Russia’s ultimate prevalence resulted from new strategies of military colonization in addition to improvements in army command-and-control, logistics, and tactics. Miscellanea Historico-Archivistica, t. XXII ISSN 0860–1054 Jarosław Zawadzki (Archiwum Główne Akt Dawnych, Warszawa) PRÓBA UTWORZENIA GDAŃSKIEJ FAKTORII HANDLOWEJ W WIELKIM KSIĘSTWIE LITEWSKIM W XVII WIEKU Dnia 27 X 1629 r. Janusz Kiszka, wojewoda połocki, starosta parnawski i bol- nicki podarował swej żonie Krystynie z Druckich Sokolińskich dobra Czaśniki z folwarkiem Smolany, w województwie połockim1.
