TAAS Monthly Observing Challenge December 2015 Deep Sky Object NGC 772 (GX) Aries ra: 01h 59m 20.1s dec: +19° 00’ 26” Magnitude (visual) = 10.3 Size = 7.2’ x 4.3’ Position angle = 130° Description: NGC 772 (also known as Arp 78) is an unbarred spiral galaxy approximately 130 million light-years away in the constellation Aries. Around 200,000 light years in diameter, NGC 772 is twice the size of the Milky Way Galaxy, and is surrounded by several satellite galaxies – including the dwarf elliptical, NGC 770 – whose tidal forces on the larger galaxy have likely caused the emergence of a single elongated outer spiral arm that is much more developed than the others arms. Halton Arp includes NGC 772 in his Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies as Arp 78, where it is described as a "Spiral galaxy with a small high-surface brightness companion". Two supernovae (SN 2003 hl & SN 2003 iq) have been observed in NGC 772. Malphrus Department of Physical Sciences, Morehead State University, Morehead, KY 40351 [email protected] ABSTRACT We present 21 cm observations of Arp 158. We have performed a study of the neutral hydrogen (H i) to help us understand the overall formation and evolution of this system. This is a disturbed system with distinct optical knots connected by a linear structure embedded in luminous material. There is also a diffuse spray to the southeast. The H i seems to be made up of three distinct, kinematically separate systems. Arp 158 bears a certain optical resemblance to NGC 520 (Arp 157), which has been identified as a mid- stage merger. From our 21 cm observations of Arp 158, we also see a comparable H i arXiv:astro-ph/0405405v1 20 May 2004 content with NGC 520. These similarities suggest that Arp 158 is also an intermediate stage merger. Subject headings: galaxies: interacting – individual galaxy (Arp 158) – ISM: H i 1. INTRODUCTION In the early seventies, Toomre (1970) and Toomre & Toomre (1972), presented numerical models which demonstrated that strong tidal forces between interacting galaxies could result in features like plumes, shells, rings, tidal tails, and bridges. They also proposed that such strong collisions between galaxies would lead to orbital decay and eventual merging. In 1977, Toomre identified a series of galaxies that he believed represented galaxies at different stages of merging – 2 – (“The Toomre Sequence”) and proposed that the end product of such merging could be an elliptical galaxy. -

ABSTRACT We present V band surface photometry and major-axis kinematics of stars and ionized gas of three early-type− spiral galaxies, namely NGC 772, NGC 3898 and NGC 7782. For each galaxy we present a self-consistent Jeans model for the stellar kinematics, adopting the light distribution of bulge and disc derived by means of a two-dimensional parametric photometric decomposition. This allowed us to investigate the presence of non-circular gas motions, and derive the mass distribution of luminous and dark matter in these objects. NGC 772 and NGC 7782 have apparently normal kinematics with the ionized gas trac- ing the gravitational equilibrium circular speed. This is not true in the innermost region ( r 800) of NGC 3898 where the ionized gas is rotating more slowly than the circular velocity| | predicted by dynamical modelling. -

Planetarium on the Cactus School campus in Palmdale, the second Friday of each month. The meeting location is at the northeast corner of Avenue R and 20th Street East. Meetings start at 7 p.m. and are open to the public. Please note that food and drink are not allowed in the planetarium President Frank Moore Headline January 26, 2015. Giant asteroid makes close pass of earth. Visible to amateur astronomers with modest sized telescopes. Clouds move in to cover the view in Southern California….of course. President of Antelope Valley Astronomy Club fields questions from people asking if the asteroid is causing the “historic blizzard” on the East Coast. President says, in a word, “NO!!” though many callers are still skeptical. There you have it fellow AVAC members, today’s current events in a nutshell. In other recent news of astronomical interest, on January 23 we had three moons of Jupiter transit across the face of the giant planet. Weather permitting, this should have been visible to amateur astronomers with mid-sized telescopes. I set up our C-11 in the afternoon and got ready for what, we expected, would be a great night of observing not just Jupiter, but also other celestial wonders. Once it got dark enough I did a polar alignment, a three star alignment, and threw in a few calibration stars to boot. -
