VOLUME 3 2020 AMORETTE IS AMONG a DISTINGUISHED GROUP of 1,244 Restaurants Worldwide with Wine Lists Worthy of Receiving Wine Spectator’S Best Award of Excellence WINE LIST VOLUME 3 2020 AMORETTE IS AMONG A DISTINGUISHED GROUP of 1,244 restaurants worldwide with wine lists worthy of receiving Wine Spectator’s Best Award of Excellence. These wine lists display excellent breadth across multiple wine-growing regions and/or significant vertical depth of top producers, along with superior presentation. Typically offering 350 or more selections, these restaurants are destinations for serious wine lovers, showing a deep commitment to wine, both in the cellar and through their service team. FROM THE SOMMELIER FOR OVER THIRTY YEARS I HAVE WORKED AS A SOMMELIER and my professional career has taken me through various regions in France, and major wine countries in Europe like Italy, Spain, and Greece. I am a member of the American Sommelier Association, Philadelphia Chapter 2000- 2002 and Member of the Union de la Sommellerie Francaise from 1990-1994 in Paris. I lived in some of the most amazing cities, like Paris and London, where I worked in prestigious Michelin Star restaurants and was introduced to Mr. Olivier Poussier who would later become the world’s best Sommelier 2000 in Montreal, Canada. He influenced my career to become an international Sommelier. I have been in the United States for over 20 years, working with nationally and world renowned chefs like Jean-Louis Palladin (Watergate Hotel Washington DC, Chef Robert Wiedmaier (Marcel’s Restaurant Washington DC), Chef Georges Perrier (Le Bec fin and Table 31 in Philadelphia), and Chef Martin Hamann (Four Seasons Hotel, Fountain in Philadelphia). In addition, I had the opportunity to meet with Mr. Robert Parker Jr. from the Wine Advocate Magazine for private tasting and discussion on several occasions. The world of wine changes each and every day and, for the last thirty years, while deepening my love for the wines of Europe and North-America, I have also passionately embraced the study of wines from all around the world including areas like Argentina, Chile, New- Zealand, Australia, and South-Africa. I love sharing my passion and my enthusiasm for wine. I am driven by the search for the right food and wine pairings and delight in working on food themes, bringing wine to life, focusing on the varietals, the appellations, the wine making methods, and above all, I enjoy the people who craft the wine. Warmth and friendship, clarity and simplicity, are all inherently part of my daily routine. I have been fortunate in pursuing a career in a fascinating field which offers daily opportunities to pursue the two goals I set for myself: continually strive to be a high-level professional and spread the love for wine and gastronomy. • Kutch Wines: Following Your Pinot Dream
Compromises are for relationships, not Pinot Noir Volume 8, Issue 37 May 16, 2011 Kutch Wines: Following Your Pinot Dream When I first met Jamie Kutch at Kosta Browne Winery in May 2005, he was a greenhorn winemaker learning the craft at the side of Michael Browne who was fashioning his wines in a section of the caves at Freeman Winery in Sebastopol. Jamie’s story is a familiar yarn, played out many times in the last decade by currently successful winemakers such as George Levkoff (a former bond trader who is the owner and winemaker at George Wines), Thomas Rivers Brown (an English literature major at University of Virginia and now owner and winemaker at Rivers-Marie), and Thomas Houseman (a former professional modern dancer who is now the winemaker at Annie Amie in Oregon). These individuals are but a sampling of those who left behind a different life to pursue Pinot Noir winemaking. In early 2005, I received a curious e-mail from a PinotFile reader in New York who related to me that he had spent the better part of a week staying awake until 3:00 AM reading past issues. He went on to tell me he had learned an enormous amount about Pinot Noir and wouldn’t stop until he had read every issue. My ears perked up when he told me he was leaving his career on Wall Street to make Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley. Jamie had lived his entire life in New York City. A Fordham graduate, he was working as a NASDAQ trader with Merrill Lynch, commuting daily to Manhattan on the Long Island Railroad.

  • Wines of St Emilion Tasting
THE 1er GRAND CRU CLASSÉ (B) WINES OF ST EMILION A TASTING AT ROBERSON WINE THURSDAY NOVEMBER 20th 2008 ST EMILION THE PLACE ST EMILION The beauful town and UNESCO world heritage site of St Emilion gives its name to one of the wine world’s most lauded (set of) appellaons. Situated on the right bank of the Dordogne River, the town is located high on an escapment overlooking the river to the south, Pomerol to the west and the Cotes and other satellite appellaons (Lussac-St-Emilion and Cotes de Casllon etc) on the plains to the north. This large area is fascinangly diverse, both in terms of the terroir and the quality of the wines produced across the commune. Merlot is the common denominator for the vast majority of estates, with the variety thriving in the clay rich soils of the region. Cabernet Franc also fares very well and tends to overshadow its more illustrious offspring, Cabernet Sauvignon, which is more at home on the other side of the river. St Emilion has been something of a baleground for the terroir debate over recent years. It is a commune that is blessed with a number of disnct soil types and topographies, but was also the birthplace of ‘les Ga- ragistes’, a movement that used ny yields, modern winemaking techniques and lots of new oak to produce wines of class and concentraon from unheralded vineyard sites. While the debate sll rages on the importance of terroir, it is seen by many to be far from coincidental that the top performing estates are situated in the prime locaons.

  • JASON WISE (Director): SOMM 3
Book Reviews 423 JASON WISE (Director): SOMM 3. Written by Christina Wise and Jason Wise, Produced by Forgotten Man Films, Distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Films, 2018; 1 h 18 min. This is the third in a trilogy of documentaries about the wine world from Jason Wise. The first—Somm, a marvelous film which I reviewed for this Journal in 2013 (Stavins, 2013)–followed a group of four thirty-something sommeliers as they prepared for the exam that would permit them to join the Court of Master Sommeliers, the pinnacle of the profession, a level achieved by only 200 people glob- ally over half a century. The second in the series—Somm: Into the Bottle—provided an exploration of the many elements that go into producing a bottle of wine. And the third—Somm 3—unites its predecessors by combining information and evocative scenes with a genuine dramatic arc, which may not have you on pins and needles as the first film did, but nevertheless provides what is needed to create a film that should not be missed by oenophiles, and many others for that matter. Before going further, I must take note of some unfortunate, even tragic events that have recently involved the segment of the wine industry—sommeliers—featured in this and the previous films in the series. Five years after the original Somm was released, a cheating scandal rocked the Court of Master Sommeliers, when the results of the tasting portion of the 2018 exam were invalidated because a proctor had disclosed confidential test information the day of the exam.

  • The Wines of Pomerol with Neal Martin
ROBERSON WINE FINE WINE TASTINGS THE WINES OF POMEROL WITH NEAL MARTIN Thursday 25th November 2010 POMEROL THE COMMUNE Pomerol is the smallest of the great appellations of Bordeaux, but is home to many of the region’s most expensive and sought after wines. While Chateau Petrus is Pomerol’s undoubted star performer, there are many other fantastic estates that make sensational wines from the commune’s 780ha of vines. We are delighted to welcome the Wine Advocate’s Neal Martin to Roberson tonight - Neal is putting the finishing touches to his book on Pomerol and there could be no one better to talk us through the leading estates and their wines. Pomerol is a bit of an anomaly in the Bordeaux wine scene for a number of reasons. First of all, it is small - at 780ha it is about 1/2 the size of the famous Haut-Medoc communes (excepting St Julien at about 1000ha) and just 1/7th the size of next door neighbour St Emilion. It is worth bearing in mind that the Burgundy village of Gevrey-Chambertin has nearly 500ha under vine and with a landscape that is little more than a sea of vines, one could be forgiven for thinking Pomerol should be nestled on the Cote d’Or rather than being back garden to the nearby town of Libourne on Bordeaux’s right bank. It is not just the appellation itself that is relatively small, but also the estates within it. Of the 10 properties that we will taste from tonight, the largest is just 24ha in size (smaller than Domaine de la Romanée-Conti) and half of them are under 10ha.

If you drink no Noir, you Pinot Noir Volume 10, Issue 25 February 8, 2016 Revisiting New Zealand Pinot Noir on the Occasion of Spectacular 2013 Vintage The New Zealand wine industry is thriving in a relatively small country that depends on exports for its survival. According the 2015 New Zealand Winegrowers Annual Report, the value of New Zealand wine exports grew 7% in 2015 to reach a new record of $1.42 billion. Three markets, Australia, UK and USA each account for around one quarter of exports (the USA is the largest export market by value) with significant future growth potential evident in North American and China. New Zealand wine is exported to more than 90 countries. Exports of Pinot Noir nearly doubled from 2008 to 2015. New Zealand is still renowned for Sauvignon Blanc which accounts for the vast majority of the country’s wine production, but Pinot Noir, and even Chardonnay, is attracting the most attention from wine connoisseurs. As Nick Stock, Australia Gourmet Traveller Wine, pointed out in April 2015, “The attention given to New Zealand Pinot Noir is well above what’s deserved in terms of the amount made, but factor in their quality across a range of styles and it’s easy to justify the hype.” Refer to chart below for percentage of production by varietal. From 2006 to 2015, the number of New Zealand wineries has increased from 530 to 673 and the number of growers from 87 to 762. Total producing vineyard area in 2015 was 88,609 acres. Pinot Noir acreage has increased from 10,039 acres in 2006 to 13,748 acres in 2015 (nearly equal to the 14,027 acres of Pinot Noir in the Willamette Valley.
