Andy Pearson Born With a Silver Spanner in Her Hand BY ANDY PEARSON, PH.D., C.ENG., FELLOW ASHRAE I’m writing this column on the birthday of one of the most unusual and inspiring characters in engineering history. She was born in a Scottish castle near Perth into a family of the landed gentry and was named after her godmother who was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Despite her noble beginnings Victoria Drummond clearly had an aptitude for hands-on engineering. As a young girl she enjoyed making wooden toys and mod- els and is said to have won prizes for them. Aged 21 she started an apprenticeship in a garage in Perth and two years later transferred her training to the Caledon Shipbuilding yard in Dundee, where she served her time in the pattern shop for the foundry and in the fin- ishing shop. After two more years she completed her apprenticeship and spent further time as a journey- man engine builder and then in the drawing office at Caledon. When the yard hit hard times a couple of years later she was laid off, but managed to get a place with the Blue Funnel line in Liverpool and after a short trial voyage she was signed on as tenth engineer (the bottom rung of the ladder) on a passenger liner sailing between England and Australia. -

A Wartime Voyage on the Abosso Our parents, Tom and Gladys Mallinson, were married in June 1937 near Leeds in West Yorkshire. They started their married life in Bramhope, a village close to Leeds. Tom worked as a manager in a tannery in Leeds while Gladys ran a hairdressing business with her sister. Times were difficult with it being in the middle of the depression years, and Tom was always on the lookout for opportunities to improve their lot in life. Such an opportunity finally arose in 1939 when he was offered a position with the United Africa Company (UAC) in Nigeria as a hides and skins manager. He accepted on condition that Gladys could follow him to Nigeria within a matter of months. Unfortunately, the war had started in September, but Tom was able to obtain a passage to Nigeria on the Leonean in March 1940. His letters to Gladys over the next fourteen months reflect both his yearning for her, his delight with his new job and the freedom it had brought him, and his worries about Gladys’s welfare in England and the dangers of a sea voyage. With the Battle of the Atlantic increasing in intensity, Gladys’s departure was delayed indefinitely when the UAC decided that passages for the wives of employees were not a priority. Eventually, the company relented, and Gladys was able to book a passage on the M.V.Abosso, an Elder Dempster liner, leaving from Liverpool in May 1941. The account that follows was written by Gladys after she arrived in Maiduguri, northern Nigeria. -

The history of merchant seafarer training is probably almost as old as deep sea seafaring itself. It can certainly be identified from medieval times, at least in Britain through the adoption of craft guild progression structures: apprenticeship, journeyman craftsman (mate), master craftsman. In British seafaring two levels of apprenticeship evolved: seaman apprenticeship and officer apprenticeship. With the opening of the oceans in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, educational dimensions, especially navigation, began to be taught ashore as well as at sea, to those destined for command. Until well into the nineteenth century, skills aspects, grouped under the term seamanship, were always learned or taught through example and experience aboard ships engaged in commercial trading. -

Nicholas James Veevers DISSERTATION PRESENTED IN PART FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE IN OUTDOOR EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH MORAY HOUSE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION (2006) This dissertation is dedicated to the most honourable man I have ever met, my father, Jim Veevers, who died after a long illness during its construction. To him I owe my love of the outdoors. “Because I had the opportunities he did not” ABSTRACT It appears that Kurt Hahn (1886 – 1974) did not produce a specific piece of work which traced, in detail, his development of outdoor activities. Research indicated that, although there have been studies examining his educational theory as a whole, there have been no detailed studies which have specifically investigated Hahn’s development of outdoor activities in an historical context. As Hahn was one of the field’s greatest advocates, a historical study, tracing his development of outdoor activities, was needed to document these events. The aim was to provide the most in-depth historical account possible (up to, and including the 1944 Education Act) and so provide a clearer version of events than existed previously. The research used an inductive approach based on primary data (documents, interviews, correspondence) which was processed using thematic analysis. These findings show that Hahn’s development of outdoor activities is much more complicated than the often quoted fact of him being one of the founders of Outward Bound in 1941. For an accurate understanding of Hahn’s contribution to the outdoor experiential education field this should be recognised. -

From 1808 through the 1860s, Britain also exerted considerable pressure (accompa nied by equally considerable sums of money) on the U.S.A., Brazil, and European countries in the trade to cease their slaving. Subsequently, at the outbreak ofthe American Civil War in 1861, which was at least partly fought over the issue ofthe extension ofslavery, Britain declared her neutrality. Insofar as appearances were concerned, the British government both engaged in a vigorous suppression of the Atlantic slave trade and kept a distance from Confederate rebels during the American Civil War. -

NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY In Trade: Wealthy Business Families in Glasgow and Liverpool, 1870-1930 A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Field of History By Emma Goldsmith EVANSTON, ILLINOIS December 2017 2 Abstract This dissertation provides an account of the richest people in Glasgow and Liverpool at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. It focuses on those in shipping, trade, and shipbuilding, who had global interests and amassed large fortunes. It examines the transition away from family business as managers took over, family successions altered, office spaces changed, and new business trips took hold. At the same time, the family itself underwent a shift away from endogamy as young people, particularly women, rebelled against the old way of arranging marriages. This dissertation addresses questions about gentrification, suburbanization, and the decline of civic leadership. It challenges the notion that businessmen aspired to become aristocrats. It follows family businessmen through the First World War, which upset their notions of efficiency, businesslike behaviour, and free trade, to the painful interwar years. This group, once proud leaders of Liverpool and Glasgow, assimilated into the national upper-middle class. This dissertation is rooted in the family papers left behind by these families, and follows their experiences of these turbulent and eventful years. 3 Acknowledgements This work would not have been possible without the advising of Deborah Cohen. Afrika Zamani, Nos. 9&10, 2001–2002, pp. 19–40 © Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa & Association of African Historians 2002 (ISSN 0850-3079) ‘Getting Too Great A Grip’: European Shipping Lines and British West African Lighterage Services in the 1930s1 Ayodeji Olukoju* Abstract With only one natural seaport on the West African coastline, shipping in the region during the colonial period was dependent upon the use of lighters to feed ocean-going vessels. However, lighterage services were monopolised by the leading expatriate shipping lines which constituted the West African shipping Conference or cartel. This essay examines the reaction of the British government when an American tramp shipper challenged the cartel on the issue of shipping charges in British West Africa and triggered the West African lighterage servi- ces controversy of the 1930s. The paper exposes the discriminatory practices of the lighterage companies which tried to forestall potential competition on the US/West Africa shipping route. The cartel, by cleverly tying its interests with those of the United Kingdom and mobilising support in the Colonial Office and the Board of Trade, proved too entrenched to be dislodged. In its analysis of the debate among leading officials in the Colonial Office, the essay sheds light on the cleavage between the protectionnists and free traders, the ramifications of business/ government, metropolitan/colonial relations, and on the leverage of shipping in the imperial economic system. It was a system clearly controlled by the imperatives of the paramountcy of British over foreign, and of metropolitan over colonial, interests. Research Report Forgotten Wrecks of the First World War During the Maritime Archaeology Trust’s Heritage Lottery funded Forgotten Wrecks of the First World War project, scores of volunteers undertook online research into vessels that were lost off the south coast of England during the First World War. Their findings were used to populate the project database and contributed to Site Reports. Both are publicly available via the Forgotten Wrecks website.
