Smart The objects of the Society are:- 1. To encourage interest in the history of shipping (particularly local shipping) by collecting and collating material relating thereto; 2. To undertake an historical survey of Liverpool vessels, their builders, owners and masters; 3. To disseminate such information by publications or by any other available means; 4. To co-operate in every suitable way with other organisations in Liverpool or elsewhere having similar or cognate objects; 5. To encourage the making and collection of scale ship models, and their exhibition. The annual subscription entitles members to attend meetings of the Society, to read papers before it, to take part in any excursions that may be arranged and to receive "Transactions" and "News, Notes and Queries", issued from time to time. Treasurer Liverpool Nautical Research Society 28 Exchange Street East Liverpool2 2 EDITORIAL This volume of Transactions covers a long period, 1955 to 1961. The reason for such a delay since Volume VIII, published in 1957, has been the cost of printing. Only recently has the Society accumulated enough money to cover production costs. However this volume, number IX, tries to make up for the long wait by its size and contents. Fourteen papers have been selected for publication. Many more have of course been given to the Society, but these have either been off-the-cuff talks or of largely visual appeal. There is no doubt that many more of the Society's meetings these days are addressed extempore and a tape recorder has been suggested as a means of recording. In order that readers may gain a full appreciation of the scope of the Society's meetings, a list of all of these since November, 1955, inclusive, is given in the following pages, together with brief notes about them and references to books and journals where they may be found in print. Of course all meetings have been reported in News, Notes and Queries, but it may be handy for members to have a complete list for the period covered by these Transactions. THE SOCIETY'S MEETINGS, 1955-61 lOth November, 1955: "The Royal Navy and the Defeat of Napoleon". By A. N. Ryan, M.A. Mr. Ryan spoke of the post-Trafalgar period and explained in some detail how the Royal Navy contributed to the downfall of Napoleon; by the effectiveness of its blockading squadrons and by the mobility it gave to the British Army, making possible the successful prosecution of the Peninsular campaign. A report of this paper is in News, Notes and Queries, for Novem­ ber, 1955, Volume V, No. 4. Serial number of meeting: 99. 7th December, 1955: "Nautical Research". By Frank G. G. Carr, c.B.E., M.A. This was the Society's one hundredth meeting and appropriately the speaker was the Director of the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich. Mr. Carr outlined the work of the Society for Nautical Research and ex­ plained the kind of activities the Liverpool Nautical Research Society could usefully undertake. He emphasized the study of local craft, such as Mersey flats. Finally,he said, research should have three points, like Neptune's trident; Pleasure in the Past, Pride in the Present and Fortitude for the Future. His address is reported in News, Notes and Queries for February, 1956, Volume VI, No. 1. Serial number of meeting: 100. 12th January, 1956: "The Alabama Case". By Rupert C. Jarvis, F.S.A., F.R.HIST.S. A masterly exposition by the Librarian of the Custom House Library in · London of the legal side of the Alabama incident. Mr. Jarvis outlined the rise of privateering and the provisions of our Foreign Enlistment Act. He 3 4 TRANSACTIONS explained how the Alabama left the Mersey quite legally, as she was unarmed; nevertheless the British Government paid 15-!- million dollars as reparation for the damage she and her sisters from British yards, had done. In October, 1959, Mr. Jarvis presented a similar paper to the Historic Society of Lancashire and Cheshire. It is printed in the Transactions of the Historic Society of Lancashire and Cheshire, Volume CXI, 1959, and reported in our News, Notes and Queries for February, 1956, Volume VI, No. 1. Serial number of meeting: 101. 9th February, 1956: "Marine Photography". An Exhibition arranged by R. J. Hughes, A.I.B.P., of Stewart Bale Ltd. Mr. Hughes spoke about the work of the professional ship photographer, how he had to have the "feel" of ships, and get his picture in spite of un­ favourable conditions. Mr. Hughes had a fund of anecdotes, of Mr. Molotov at the wheel of the Queen Elizabeth, and of being himself locked in the cabin of a Russian ship under repair at Birkenhead. The exhibition was superb, as one would expect from Stewart Bale Ltd. A report is in News, Notes and Queries for March, 1956, Volume VI, No. 2. Serial number of meeting: 102. 8th March, 1956: "Lancaster, West Indian Competitor of Liverpool, 1680- 1815". By M. M. Schofield, M.A. A scholarly presentation which destroyed some popular misconceptions about Lancaster's early history. Mr. Schofield spoke of the diary of William Stout, a Quaker grocer, who gave useful information about early 18th century trade. Lancaster enjoyed opulence before the advent of canals and railways, the feeders on which Liverpool depended for her growth. Mr. Schofield has published this paper, in more extended form, in the "Trans­ actions of the Lancaster Branch of the Historical Association-No. 2" under the title "Outlines of an Economic History of Lancaster". Part I, 1680 to 1800, Part II, 1800 to 1860. Dated 1951. His talk is reported in News, Notes and Queries for April, 1956, Volume VI, No. 3. Andy Pearson Born With a Silver Spanner in Her Hand BY ANDY PEARSON, PH.D., C.ENG., FELLOW ASHRAE I’m writing this column on the birthday of one of the most unusual and inspiring characters in engineering history. She was born in a Scottish castle near Perth into a family of the landed gentry and was named after her godmother who was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Despite her noble beginnings Victoria Drummond clearly had an aptitude for hands-on engineering. As a young girl she enjoyed making wooden toys and mod- els and is said to have won prizes for them. Aged 21 she started an apprenticeship in a garage in Perth and two years later transferred her training to the Caledon Shipbuilding yard in Dundee, where she served her time in the pattern shop for the foundry and in the fin- ishing shop. After two more years she completed her apprenticeship and spent further time as a journey- man engine builder and then in the drawing office at Caledon. When the yard hit hard times a couple of years later she was laid off, but managed to get a place with the Blue Funnel line in Liverpool and after a short trial voyage she was signed on as tenth engineer (the bottom rung of the ladder) on a passenger liner sailing between England and Australia.

The history of merchant seafarer training is probably almost as old as deep sea seafaring itself. It can certainly be identified from medieval times, at least in Britain through the adoption of craft guild progression structures: apprenticeship, journeyman craftsman (mate), master craftsman. In British seafaring two levels of apprenticeship evolved: seaman apprenticeship and officer apprenticeship. With the opening of the oceans in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, educational dimensions, especially navigation, began to be taught ashore as well as at sea, to those destined for command. Until well into the nineteenth century, skills aspects, grouped under the term seamanship, were always learned or taught through example and experience aboard ships engaged in commercial trading.

The first six months found Perth in Central American waters, mainly engaged in the dual task of protecting trade — especially the important tanker traffic in the Caribbean—and preventin g the escape of German merchant ships sheltering in neutral ports of th e islands and the Isthmus . Last of the three expansion-program cruiser s acquired from Britain, she had commissioned at Portsmouth on the 29th June 1939 as H .M.A. Ship under "Fighting Freddie " Farncomb, a studious , coolly-efficient officer whose nickname, bestowed during the war, reflected the confidence and esteem of the lower deck . Perth sailed from Portsmouth on the 26th July for Australia via th e Panama Canal, and reached New York, where she represented Australi a at the World Fair, on the 4th August. On the 21st of the month, after twelve days of American hospitality, she arrived at Kingston, Jamaica, an d was to have sailed for Panama on the 23rd, but in the early morning o f that date Farncomb received a signal sent to the Admiralty by the Com- mander-in-Chief, America and West Indies—Vice-Admiral Meyrick' — asking that Perth might remain on the station . Farncomb thereupon can- celled his sailing arrangements, thus anticipating an Admiralty signa l received later in the day directing him to "return Kingston and awai t further orders " .

Nicholas James Veevers DISSERTATION PRESENTED IN PART FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE IN OUTDOOR EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH MORAY HOUSE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION (2006) This dissertation is dedicated to the most honourable man I have ever met, my father, Jim Veevers, who died after a long illness during its construction. To him I owe my love of the outdoors. “Because I had the opportunities he did not” ABSTRACT It appears that Kurt Hahn (1886 – 1974) did not produce a specific piece of work which traced, in detail, his development of outdoor activities. Research indicated that, although there have been studies examining his educational theory as a whole, there have been no detailed studies which have specifically investigated Hahn’s development of outdoor activities in an historical context. As Hahn was one of the field’s greatest advocates, a historical study, tracing his development of outdoor activities, was needed to document these events. The aim was to provide the most in-depth historical account possible (up to, and including the 1944 Education Act) and so provide a clearer version of events than existed previously. The research used an inductive approach based on primary data (documents, interviews, correspondence) which was processed using thematic analysis. These findings show that Hahn’s development of outdoor activities is much more complicated than the often quoted fact of him being one of the founders of Outward Bound in 1941. For an accurate understanding of Hahn’s contribution to the outdoor experiential education field this should be recognised.

    NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY In Trade: Wealthy Business Families in Glasgow and Liverpool, 1870-1930 A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Field of History By Emma Goldsmith EVANSTON, ILLINOIS December 2017 2 Abstract This dissertation provides an account of the richest people in Glasgow and Liverpool at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. It focuses on those in shipping, trade, and shipbuilding, who had global interests and amassed large fortunes. It examines the transition away from family business as managers took over, family successions altered, office spaces changed, and new business trips took hold. At the same time, the family itself underwent a shift away from endogamy as young people, particularly women, rebelled against the old way of arranging marriages. This dissertation addresses questions about gentrification, suburbanization, and the decline of civic leadership. It challenges the notion that businessmen aspired to become aristocrats. It follows family businessmen through the First World War, which upset their notions of efficiency, businesslike behaviour, and free trade, to the painful interwar years. This group, once proud leaders of Liverpool and Glasgow, assimilated into the national upper-middle class. This dissertation is rooted in the family papers left behind by these families, and follows their experiences of these turbulent and eventful years. 3 Acknowledgements This work would not have been possible without the advising of Deborah Cohen. The River Mersey was once renowned as a polluted river but now it’s not unusual to see seals, porpoise and dolphin in the Mersey. Charter fishing boats regularly pass from the Mersey to Liverpool Bay which has become one of the best inshore cod fishing grounds in north west Europe. 61 East Wirral (Mersey Estuary) Eastham Country Park 1 Eastham Country Park Eastham Country Park holds immense value and is a long- standing, major leisure and nature conservation area. It covers some 43 hectares and it is the last remaining substantial area of undeveloped land with public access on the Wirral bank of the River Mersey between Birkenhead and Ellesmere Port. Its location gives it particular importance as a local amenity, wildlife and educational resource. The site includes approximately 26 hectares of mature mixed deciduous woodland, 8 hectares of amenity grassland, 3 hectares of new plantation woodland and 3 hectares of natural grassland and scrub.

    SEMAPHORE SEA POWER CENTRE - AUSTRALIA ISSUE 8, 2017 THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY ON THE SILVER SCREEN In this day and age, technologies such as smart phones and tablets allow users to film and view video streams on almost any topic imaginable at the convenience of their fingertips. Indeed, most institutions, including the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), promote video streaming as part of carefully coordinated public relations, recruiting and social media programs. In yesteryear, however, this was not a simple process and the creation and screening of news reels, motion pictures and training films was a costly and time consuming endeavor for all concerned. Notwithstanding that, the RAN has enjoyed an ongoing presence on the silver screen, television and more recently the internet on its voyage from silent pictures to the technologically advanced, digital 21st century. The RAN’s earliest appearances in motion pictures occurred during World War 1. The first of these films was Sea Dogs of Australia, a silent picture about an Australian naval officer blackmailed into helping a foreign spy. The film’s public release in August 1914 coincided with the outbreak of war and it was consequently withdrawn after the Minister for Defence expressed security concerns over film footage taken on board the battlecruiser HMAS Australia (I). There was, however, an apparent change of heart following the victory of HMAS Sydney (I) over the German cruiser SMS Emden in November 1914.
