O período em questão apresenta grandes transformações no contexto atlântico, incluindo o final do tráfico de escravos pela Inglaterra, e marca também uma alteração no equilíbrio das forças na costa e no interior da África Ocidental. Desta forma, o trabalho procura mostrar como as ideias inglesas sobre escravidão e tráfico de escravos interferem nas dinâmicas de representação e nas práticas diplomáticas europeias para com as sociedades próximas ao curso do rio Niger. Finalmente, o artigo também aponta para a forma como as preocupações quase exclusivamente geográficas das primeiras viagens paulatinamente adquiriram o caráter intervencionista de um discurso de posse ao mesmo tempo em que as novas condições materiais e técnicas desequilibravam as relações de força em favor da Inglaterra. Abstract: This paper analyzes a set of texts written during English expeditions in the region of the Niger River between first trip of Mungo Park (1795) and the 1841 official British expedition, looking for the similarities and differences in representations over time. The period in question encompassed transformations in the Atlantic context, including the end of the slave trade in England, and also assigns a change in the balance of forces on the coast and in the interior of West Africa. -
A Wartime Voyage on the Abosso
A Wartime Voyage on the Abosso Our parents, Tom and Gladys Mallinson, were married in June 1937 near Leeds in West Yorkshire. They started their married life in Bramhope, a village close to Leeds. Tom worked as a manager in a tannery in Leeds while Gladys ran a hairdressing business with her sister. Times were difficult with it being in the middle of the depression years, and Tom was always on the lookout for opportunities to improve their lot in life. Such an opportunity finally arose in 1939 when he was offered a position with the United Africa Company (UAC) in Nigeria as a hides and skins manager. He accepted on condition that Gladys could follow him to Nigeria within a matter of months. Unfortunately, the war had started in September, but Tom was able to obtain a passage to Nigeria on the Leonean in March 1940. His letters to Gladys over the next fourteen months reflect both his yearning for her, his delight with his new job and the freedom it had brought him, and his worries about Gladys’s welfare in England and the dangers of a sea voyage. With the Battle of the Atlantic increasing in intensity, Gladys’s departure was delayed indefinitely when the UAC decided that passages for the wives of employees were not a priority. Eventually, the company relented, and Gladys was able to book a passage on the M.V.Abosso, an Elder Dempster liner, leaving from Liverpool in May 1941. The account that follows was written by Gladys after she arrived in Maiduguri, northern Nigeria. -

Subsequently, at the outbreak ofthe American Civil War in 1861, which was at least partly fought over the issue ofthe extension ofslavery, Britain declared her neutrality. Insofar as appearances were concerned, the British government both engaged in a vigorous suppression of the Atlantic slave trade and kept a distance from Confederate rebels during the American Civil War. -

NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY In Trade: Wealthy Business Families in Glasgow and Liverpool, 1870-1930 A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Field of History By Emma Goldsmith EVANSTON, ILLINOIS December 2017 2 Abstract This dissertation provides an account of the richest people in Glasgow and Liverpool at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. It focuses on those in shipping, trade, and shipbuilding, who had global interests and amassed large fortunes. It examines the transition away from family business as managers took over, family successions altered, office spaces changed, and new business trips took hold. At the same time, the family itself underwent a shift away from endogamy as young people, particularly women, rebelled against the old way of arranging marriages. This dissertation addresses questions about gentrification, suburbanization, and the decline of civic leadership. It challenges the notion that businessmen aspired to become aristocrats. It follows family businessmen through the First World War, which upset their notions of efficiency, businesslike behaviour, and free trade, to the painful interwar years. This group, once proud leaders of Liverpool and Glasgow, assimilated into the national upper-middle class. This dissertation is rooted in the family papers left behind by these families, and follows their experiences of these turbulent and eventful years. 3 Acknowledgements This work would not have been possible without the advising of Deborah Cohen. Afrika Zamani, Nos. 9&10, 2001–2002, pp. 19–40 © Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa & Association of African Historians 2002 (ISSN 0850-3079) ‘Getting Too Great A Grip’: European Shipping Lines and British West African Lighterage Services in the 1930s1 Ayodeji Olukoju* Abstract With only one natural seaport on the West African coastline, shipping in the region during the colonial period was dependent upon the use of lighters to feed ocean-going vessels. However, lighterage services were monopolised by the leading expatriate shipping lines which constituted the West African shipping Conference or cartel. This essay examines the reaction of the British government when an American tramp shipper challenged the cartel on the issue of shipping charges in British West Africa and triggered the West African lighterage servi- ces controversy of the 1930s. The paper exposes the discriminatory practices of the lighterage companies which tried to forestall potential competition on the US/West Africa shipping route. The cartel, by cleverly tying its interests with those of the United Kingdom and mobilising support in the Colonial Office and the Board of Trade, proved too entrenched to be dislodged. In its analysis of the debate among leading officials in the Colonial Office, the essay sheds light on the cleavage between the protectionnists and free traders, the ramifications of business/ government, metropolitan/colonial relations, and on the leverage of shipping in the imperial economic system. It was a system clearly controlled by the imperatives of the paramountcy of British over foreign, and of metropolitan over colonial, interests. British control and spread into the hinterland from Lagos and from the lower reaches of the Niger was achieved through the effective employment of the instrument of treaties. The eventual British colonial acquisitions in Nigeria were preceded by a treaty-making phase during which the powers signed agreements with the local authorities to formalise their interests. These were the same documents (i.e treaties) that were conceived to establish political claims thereafter and defined Nigeria’s geo-political boundaries. The paper argues that colonialism presented the effective manipulation of British designed treaties for the furtherance of British trade and commerce. By 1914, Britain had gained effective control of the entire area of Nigeria as a colony. -

The Nature of British Mapping of West Africa, 1749 – 1841 Sven Daniel Outram-Leman University of Stirling PhD History Submitted 1st May 2017 Author’s declaration The work contained in this thesis is entirely my own. The views expressed are entirely my own, and not those of the University of Stirling 1 Abstract By focusing on the “nature” of mapping, this thesis falls under the category of critical cartography closely associated with the work of Brian Harley in the 1980s and early 1990s. As such the purpose of this research is to highlight the historical context of British maps, map-making and map-reading in relation to West Africa between 1749 and 1841. I argue that maps lie near the heart of Britain’s interactions with West Africa though their appearance, construction and use evolved dramatically during this period. By beginning this study with a prominent French example (Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville’s 1749 “Afrique”) I show how British map-makers adapted cartography from France for their own purposes before circumstances encouraged the development of new materials. Because of the limited opportunities to make enquiries in the region and the relatively few people involved in affecting change to the map’s content, this thesis highlights the episodes and manufactured narratives which feature in the chronology of evolving cartographies. This study concludes with the failure of the 1841 Niger Expedition, when Britain’s humanitarian agenda saw the attempted establishment of a model farm on banks of the Niger River and the negotiation of anti-slave trade treaties with nearby Africans. -

State and Merchant Fleet Development
Chapter 1 Introduction Background of the Study A number of newly-independent countries of West and Central Africa established national shipping lines in the late 1950s and 1960s as part of economic strategy to create employment, earn foreign exchange, attract technology transfer to their mainly agricultural societies and thereby industrialise their economies. They were also motivated by national pride to show their flags around the world. As at 1980, Nigeria had 27 ships, Ghana, 16 and Cote d'Ivoire 15 in a market which grew to one hundred and twenty ships belonging to 40 African and European carriers, with about sixty belonging to African states.1 At the same time, six major shipping conferences, namely Continent - West Africa Conference (COWAC), Mediterranean Europe - West Africa Conference (MEWAC), United Kingdom - West Africa Joint Service (UKWAL), Continental Europe - West Africa Lines Conference (CEWAL), America - West Africa Freight Conference (AWAFC) and Far East - West Africa Conference (FEWAC) operated in the sub- region.2 Their competitors were non-conference lines such as Maersk Line, Transmar, Grimaldi, O T Africa Line, G + C Africa Line, Nile Dutch, Rhein Mass und See (RMS) and Deep Sea Shipping, and they were the major owners of the high-yielding container ships and ro-ro vessels. Of the 120 ships in use, 29 were general cargo ships, 50 multi-purpose and semi- container ships, 3 were lighters-carriers, 21 were container ships while 17 were roll-on roll-off vessels.3 The West African fleets were mainly composed of general cargo and multi- 1 purpose/semi-container ships. The total volume of African maritime trade at the dawn of political independence was small, barely 5% of world total (in 1950) but the freight component of goods prices was the highest in the world at 12.90% as against the global average of 5.24% 4. -
