    The ideological ends of mid-century Student Union buildings: a study of disciplinary connections Clare Robinson University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona ABSTRACT: This paper closely considers the ideological underpinnings of Student Union buildings during the postwar period, when there was general agreement among student union proponents that the programs and buildings should prepare students for the political and economic realities of the postwar period. Underlying the ideological purpose of mid-century Student Union buildings were a crucial set of interdisciplinary professional connections that made the ideas of Unions manifest. Using the writing and professional work of two Union proponents – Union Director Porter Butts and architect Michael Hare – as well as several built and un-built mid-century Union buildings, this paper illustrates the disciplinary contributions of these men, what ideologies shaped the form and function of Unions, and what buildings effectively taught students in the postwar period. KEYWORDS: mid-century, College Unions, consultants INTRODUCTION Members of the Association of College Unions helped establish Student Union buildings on North American campuses during the first half of the twentieth century. In these early years, a new, heterogeneous group of professionals drawn from the ranks of university presidents, Union directors, and architects, believed these buildings were instruments of social education and subsequently cooperated on the architecture and programs that would best teach students important social lessons.1 In this way, the physical Union building represented an essential social enterprise on college campuses for the diverse group of Union proponents. The following document is based on concepts and techniques developed by the National Park Service. The NPS has produced a series of manuals for identifying, describing, and maintaining culturally significant landscapes within the national park system.1 The National Park Service defines a cultural landscape as: a geographic area, including both cultural and natural resources and the wildlife or domestic animals therein[,] associated with a historic event, activity, or person, or [one] that exhibits other cultural or aesthetic values.2 In 1925, geographer Carl Sauer (1889-1975) summarized the process that creates cultural landscapes: “Culture is the agent, the natural area is the medium, the cultural landscape the result.” 3 Similarly, the writer J. B. Jackson (1909-1996) looked upon the landscape as a composition of spaces made or modified by humans “to serve as infrastructure or background for our collective existence.”4 What is a “cultural landscape inventory”? 5 This cultural landscape inventory for Library Mall is one of eight such studies completed as part of the UW-Madison Cultural Landscape Resource Plan. Each inventory defines the boundaries of a distinct cultural landscape on campus, summarizes its history, describes its current condition, and makes recommendations about its treatment. In addition to these eight cultural landscape inventories, two companion documents address the archaeology and overall history of the campus.

In the foreground, the neighborhood later replaced by the Service Memorial Institute. [g1002] Sterling Hall was built in 1915 to house physics, political economy and commerce. In 1958 a wing was added on the south side to house the army math research center. This center was the target of a bombing in August 1970. The building is now the home of physics and astronomy. n 1913, the College of Letters and Sciences was shoehorned into three buildings (Main, North and South Halls). Not for more than a decade had building space been erected for L&S, despite Ithe fact that enrollment had risen more sharply in that college than any other, including some who had been provided with several new buildings. Both president Van Hise and Dean of Letters and Sciences Birge were determined to change this circumstance. Their approach was to plan for the construction of two structures, a liberal arts building and a physics building. In the spring of 1913, conferences began with department heads to plan the new facilities. The plan for the liberal arts building gradually became a large addition to University Hall, and the physics building took shape as the regents debated the best location for it. In October 1913 the regents decided on the site proposed by the consulting architects Laird and Cret: the north side of the 'court of honor' formed by University Hall, Birge Hall and the new building. It was to be a four story building, with physics in the lower two floors.
