PRODUCTION BIOGRAPHIES MOIRA WALLEY-BECKETT (Executive Producer/ Writer – Episode 107) Moira Walley-Beckett is a multiple award winning playwright, television writer and screenwriter. She is the Series Creator and Executive Producer of “Flesh and Bone.” Before creating “Flesh and Bone,” Moira spent six years as a writer and Co-Executive Producer on the critically acclaimed AMC series “Breaking Bad.” For her work on the show, Moira has won a total of three Emmys®, three Writers’ Guild Awards, three AFI Awards, three Saturn Awards, two PGA Awards, a Golden Globe, a Peabody, and a Pen Literary Award nomination. In 2014, Ms. Walley-Beckett received an Emmy Award® for “Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series” for her final “Breaking Bad” episode entitled “Ozymandias.” Moira has had a long and diverse career in the arts. She started her dance career at age three, training seriously in ballet and jazz through her teens. She then danced professionally in Canada for several years. She made the transition into musical theater, starring in many productions, as well as playing and recording with her rock band, Bimbo Du Jour. Before transitioning into writing, Moira was an actor in film, television and theatre. She has performed in over 30 theatrical productions in Canada and the US, and guest-starred in over 25 television shows. Before her tenure as a writer on “Breaking Bad,” Ms. Walley-Beckett wrote on the NBC drama “Raines” and “Eli Stone” and “Pan Am” for ABC. Currently, Moira has a feature film, The Grizzlies, in development with Kennedy/Marshall and Northwood Productions, as well as two new TV series in development. -

Richardson called him a liar. In his article, Adler claimed Hickok to be an expert gam- bler and a partner of Jack McCall, w^ho, after a disagreement, mur- dered Wild Bñl while he played cards. According to Adler, Hickok fell face first into the poker chips when shot. In contradiction, Ricli- arcLson contended diat there were no poker chips at the table when Hickok was killed, nor had Hickok and McCall ever been compan- ions. In fact, Hickok was not even a good card player, "I know," said Richardson, in a letter to the Neiv York Sun. "because 1 was there."' HEDREN The Black Hills gold rush was Lieutenant General Philip Henry Sheri- dan's personal nightmare—figuratively and, perhaps, literally. As prospectors and others trespassed onto lands reserved for the Lakota, or western Sioux, Indians, troops under Sheridan's administrative command opened an increasingly costly conflict with the Lakotas and Northern Cheyennes over who was to occupy the alluring, pine-dad mountainscape of western Dakota Territory. To Sheridan's chagrin, troops conducted themselves poorly in the war's opening battles in the Yellowstone River Basin of Montana Territory, where warriors fiercely resisted the incursions of the regular army. Bloodshed oc- curred with alarming frequency, as well, on the roads feeding the gold fields, creating a southern front to what became known as the Great Sioux War and spurring demands for protection by those in the Black Hills gold camps, their outfitting points to the south and west, and places in-between." A glance at the attached bibliography will show that there is available much firsthand information about even the earliest settlements, and that from this primary material many useful and entertaining histories have been constructed. Yet none of these books has dealt with the central factor of early sett 1ement--the Black Hills gold rush of l874-1879--as a unified historical phenomenon. The many writings have ob scured rather than c la rifie d this movement, and have frag mented rather than united the factors which produced its distinctive character. This work, therefore, attempts to weave from the delightful chaos of Black Hills history the story of the rush and the men who made it . If it has a lesson, beyond the te llin g of a ta le not told before, it is that no historical event is as simple as it seems, and that it takes more than gold to make a gold rush. -

Black Hills Pioneer: First Newspaper of Deadwood, Dakota Territory, 1876-1877

Black Hills Pioneer: First Newspaper of Deadwood, Dakota Territory, 1876-1877 NANCY NIETHAMMER KOVATS In August 1875 gold was discovered in the gulch that would later become the location of the infamous city of Deadwood, South Dakota. The entire Black Hills area was off-limits to whites at that time, having been designated as Sioux land in the Treaty of 1868. Nevertheless, by the following spring, thousands of miners had swarmed into the forbidden land and Deadwood became the center of the 1876 rush. Founded almost simultaneously with the town was the newspaper, the Black Hills Pioneer, which provides a revealing record of that turbulent first year. Deadwood is one of the few mining boom towns that has sur- vived to the present day. Although the original city was destroyed in the fire of 1879, many buildings dating from the 1890s have survived and are still clinging to the sides of the hills along Whitewood and Deadwood creeks. Some of the Pioneer files from 1876 to 1879 were also lost in that fire. However, enough issues were salvaged from various sources so that a record of the history of that fascinating era could be preserved. Annie D. Tallent, the first white woman in the Black Hills, who later wrote a history of the area, commented: The Black Hills Weekly Pioneer was a wide-awake, newsy sheet in 1876, and made its influence felt far and wide. Not only did it contain in- formation of the rich placer and quartz discoveries and other current news of the great mining camp, but also discussions of many of the impor- tant public questions of the day, especially those directly affecting the people of the Black Hilts.
