The purpose is to acquaint students with culture, of the area by using questioning techniques and by employing a conceptual approach for applying human geography of the, past to the present. Although -rt.ady-made lesson plans are specifically designed for junior high age groups, the activities and materials are versatile enough for use in either elementary or 'secondary schools. An overview of the Bicentennial theme tells teachers how this can be related to school programs in 1975-76. The 10 teaching units which comprise the major portion of the guide are on American Indians; explorers, trappers, traders; soldiers and forts; transportation, commerce, communication; cattlemen; agriculture; government and politics; conservation and ecology; towns and town builders; and culture. Units contain numerous projects, maps, charts, preparation and teaching time, pages are reproducible and can be transferred to a notebook or file box. He first hitched rides in the packs of fur S traders in the 1830’s and then stuck around, hanging out through the cattle drives of the 1890s. Considering Shakespeare’s large role in the Wild West of history, his absence from the Wild West of popular culture is glaring. While fictions of the Wild West are not beholden to the facts, the reasons a particular fictitious narrative has dominated the genre deserves interrogation—particularly when that narrative forms a cornerstone of national identity. A key reason for Shakespeare’s disappearance, or erasure, from the myth of the Wild West is his association with upper-class women and their civic reforms. As the “wildness” of the west became idealized, Shakespeare was remembered as a sign of refinement and his wilder and woollier past forgotten. In the mining camps of the West the same pattern emerged time and again. Shakespeare was an integrated part of these rough and rowdy communities from the start.     Along the Mississippi from Rice Lake to Boom Lake by Ann M. Nelson August 9, 2018 Introduction Throughout the early days of Brainerd, the Mississippi river served as the highway for the millions and millions of logs driven to the sawmills of Minneapolis prior to the establishment of large sawmills on the river in Brainerd. The river acted as a storage area for the logs that were to remain in the city to be milled in its sawmills. Steamboats plied the river carrying equipment and other supplies to the logging camps of the northern woods as well as providing pleasure excursions for the citizens of Brainerd before the dam was completed in 1888. Much of the water used in homes and businesses was provided by the river until 1920 when the city completed the water tower and the system of wells which finally provided clean, uncontaminated water to Brainerd citizens. Over the years, numerous bridges were built over the Mississippi at Brainerd, ferries carried passengers across the river; parks, as well as sawmills, breweries and hospitals were located along its banks. Even Evergreen Cemetery is located near the river. For years, property within the city of Brainerd located near the river was considered the most undesirable and this is where the “red light” district was located. Steamboats The early steamers on the Mississippi burned wood and were used mostly to haul men and supplies to the lumber camps that dotted the shores of the river. Although not as profitable, steamboat owners also operated excursions and hauled farm produce from and supplies to the few farms that had been established near the river.

    From the poem “Cattle” by Berta Hart Nance In the decades following the Civil War, more than 6 million cattle—up to 10 million by some accounts—were herded out of Texas in one of the greatest migrations of animals ever known. These 19th-century cattle drives laid the foundation for Texas’ wildly successful cattle industry and helped elevate the state out of post-Civil War despair and poverty. Today, our search for an American identity often leads us back to the vision of the rugged and independent men and women of the cattle drive era. Although a number of cattle drive routes existed during this period, none captured the popular imagination like the one we know today as the Chisholm Trail. Through songs, stories, and mythical tales, the Chisholm Trail has become a vital feature of American identity. Historians have long debated aspects of the Chisholm Trail’s history, including the exact route and even its name. Although they may argue over specifics, most would agree that the decades of the cattle drives were among the most colorful periods of Texas history. The purpose of this guide is not to resolve debates, but rather to help heritage tourists explore the history and lore associated with the legendary cattle-driving route.
