Appendix P Landscape Character Type P: Low Weald The Low Weald comprises a gently undulating lowland vale landscape found on the dense Weald clays that are located in the north of the South Downs. This landscape type forms only a small part of the area known as the Low Weald that extends north and east well beyond the boundary of the South Downs. Description Key Characteristics ◼ Mixed geology of dense Wealden clays with limestone and sandstone bands gives rise to a gently undulating lowland vale. ◼ Drained by numerous branching streams, which have carved narrow valleys into the Weald clay. Ponds, marshes and damp, low-lying meadows alongside streams are key ecological features. ◼ Small-scale patchwork of irregular fields of arable and pasture divided by a well-developed historic hedgerow network with hedgerow oaks or bordered by sinuous woodland edges. ◼ Deciduous woodland copses are a feature, including ancient, species-rich and ecologically important woodlands that were traditionally intensively managed for fuel and timber. ◼ Linear strips of remnant woodland (shaws) are distinctive between field and along the narrow valley streams - this tree cover means watercourses are often indiscernible within the wider landscape. ◼ A number of large ponds, representing hammerponds associated with the Wealden iron industry or later mill ponds, add to the historic time depth and ecological diversity. ◼ Settlement pattern is characterised by a high density of dispersed settlement – comprising isolated farmsteads of medieval origin set within areas of early enclosure surrounded by woodland, often assarted fields. ◼ Later encroachment around the edge of the commons has resulted in common edge settlement around a ‘village green’. -

South Coast Plain Area profile: Supporting documents Introduction National Character Areas map As part of Natural England’s responsibilities as set out in the Natural Environment White Paper,1 Biodiversity 20202 and the European Landscape Convention,3 we are revising profiles for England’s 159 National Character Areas North (NCAs). These are areas that share similar landscape characteristics, and which East follow natural lines in the landscape rather than administrative boundaries, making them a good decision-making framework for the natural environment. Yorkshire & The North Humber NCA profiles are guidance documents which can help communities to inform West their decision-making about the places that they live in and care for. The information they contain will support the planning of conservation initiatives at a East landscape scale, inform the delivery of Nature Improvement Areas and encourage Midlands broader partnership working through Local Nature Partnerships. The profiles will West also help to inform choices about how land is managed and can change. Midlands East of Each profile includes a description of the natural and cultural features England that shape our landscapes, how the landscape has changed over time, the current key drivers for ongoing change, and a broad analysis of each London area’s characteristics and ecosystem services. Statements of Environmental South East Opportunity (SEOs) are suggested, which draw on this integrated information. South West The SEOs offer guidance on the critical issues, which could help to achieve sustainable growth and a more secure environmental future. -

Being aligned north-south, it crosses all the main geologies of West Sussex from the greensand ridges, through Wealden river valleys and heathlands, to the high chalk downland and the coastal plain. In so doing it offers a great variety of scenery, flora and fauna. The trail logo reflects this by depicting the South Downs, the River Rother and Chichester Harbour. It can be walked energetically in three days, bearing in mind that the total ‘climb’ is around 650 metres/2,000 feet. The maps divide it into six sections, which although unequal in distance, break the route into stages that allow the possible use of public transport. There is a good choice of accommodation and restaurants in Liphook, Midhurst and Chichester, elsewhere there is a smattering of pubs and B&Bs – although the northern section is a little sparse in that respect. -

INTRODUCTION The West Wight Chalk Downland HEAP Area has been defined on the basis of geology, topography and historic landscape character. It forms the western half of a central chalk ridge that crosses the Isle of Wight, the eastern half having been defined as the East Wight Chalk Ridge . Another block of Chalk and Upper Greensand in the south of the Isle of Wight has been defined as the South Wight Downland . Obviously there are many similarities between these three HEAP Areas. However, each of the Areas occupies a particular geographical location and has a distinctive historic landscape character. This document identifies essential characteristics of the West Wight Chalk Downland . These include the large extent of unimproved chalk grassland, great time-depth, many archaeological features and historic settlement in the Bowcombe Valley. The Area is valued for its open access, its landscape and wide views and as a tranquil recreational area. Most of the land at the western end of this Area, from the Needles to Mottistone Down, is open access land belonging to the National Trust. Significant historic landscape features within this Area are identified within this document. The condition of these features and forces for change in the landscape are considered. Management issues are discussed and actions particularly relevant to this Area are identified from those listed in the Isle of Wight HEAP Aims, Objectives and Actions. -

Yet as a result of social and economic change it faces competition from neighbouring destinations like Chichester, Petersfield, Haselmere and Guildford. Chichester District Council recognised this problem and through a series of projects (aimed at supporting the local economy), engaged with the community to help identify key areas of development and regeneration. Whilst residents may have strong emotional links to their town or village, it is becoming increasingly important to understand and reveal the innate qualities and character of a place to attract visitors and compete with other towns in their region. However, it may be difficult to express what defines a ‘place’, but it is important to do so, to ensure that any support given by way of physical improvement or economic development, is appropriate and does not lead to the loss of individuality and regional identity. Understanding that Midhurst’s future prosperity is dependent on finding a way to manage change whilst maintaining a genuine and authentic sense of place, it became clear that a process was required to capture and articulate these unique aspects to help develop plans for the future. -

The committee has met over the past year and one-half and a large part of the data was obtained from the abstracts of the town records which were kept by Augustus Leavitt, Harry S. Kelley's history notes written in 1927 for the 200th anniversary and from the only sizable printed history of Chichester written by D. T. Brown in Hurd's History of Merrimack and Belknap Counties containing thirty seven pages. In researching we found that a whole generation is missing. It is regrettable that a history wasn't done before now when much that is now lost was within the mem- ory of some living who had the knowledge of our early history. Our thanks to the townspeople who have contributed either information, pic- tures, maps and written reports. Can have mini scarps which are individually identified in some local assessments. Large scale character influenced by rolling topography, medium to large size fields, fewer wooded hedges than the small scale type and can have large woodland blocks. Large blocks of ancient woodland and varied height hedgerow network which contrasts with areas of more open predominantly arable fields. Deeply rural quiet landscapes with sense of space and expansiveness uninterrupted by development the large woodland blocks add to the sense ruralness and of an undeveloped landscape. Low density road and lane network where this type occurs in mid and west Hampshire –higher density further east. -

However, the low hedgerows, and intermittent up areas hedgerow trees along the remaining boundaries provide little separation between the parcel and the rolling farmland beyond the parcel to the north, west and east, so that despite its proximity to Luton, the parcel relates more strongly to the wider countryside and its release would constitute significant sprawl into the countryside.
