Meyer Building, 01109 Dresden, Germany *Corresponding author Email: [email protected] ollowing several investigations of the phylogeography and systematics of grass snakes (Fritz et al., 2012; FKindler et al., 2013, 2014; Pokrant et al., 2016), we published a further detailed study on this topic in August (Kindler et al., 2017). Our new investigation revealed that only very limited gene flow occurs between western barred grass snakes and eastern common grass snakes. Consequently, we concluded that the barred grass snake (Fig. 1), previously a subspecies, should be elevated to a full species. The Perils of Periodization: Roman Ceramics in Britain after 400 CE KEITH J. FITZPATRICK-MATTHEWS North Hertfordshire Museum [email protected] ROBIN FLEMING Boston College [email protected] Abstract: The post-Roman Britons of the fifth century are a good example of people invisible to archaeologists and historians, who have not recognized a distinctive material culture for them. We propose that this material does indeed exist, but has been wrongly characterized as ‘Late Roman’ or, worse, “Anglo-Saxon.” This pottery copied late-Roman forms, often poorly or in miniature, and these pots became increasingly odd over time; local production took over, often by poorly trained potters. Occasionally, potters made pots of “Anglo-Saxon” form using techniques inherited from Romano-British traditions. It is the effect of labeling the material “Anglo-Saxon” that has rendered it, its makers, and its users invisible. Key words: pottery, Romano-British, early medieval, fifth-century, sub-Roman Archaeologists rely on the well-dated, durable material culture of past populations to “see” them. When a society exists without such a mate- rial culture or when no artifacts are dateable to a period, its population effectively vanishes. This is what happens to the indigenous people of fifth-century, lowland Britain.1 Previously detectable through their build- ings, metalwork, coinage, and especially their ceramics, these people disappear from the archaeological record c. 400 CE. Historians, for their part, depend on texts to see people in the past. Unfortunately, the texts describing Britain in the fifth-century were largely written two, three, or even four hundred years after the fact. -

INTRODUCTION The West Wight Chalk Downland HEAP Area has been defined on the basis of geology, topography and historic landscape character. It forms the western half of a central chalk ridge that crosses the Isle of Wight, the eastern half having been defined as the East Wight Chalk Ridge . Another block of Chalk and Upper Greensand in the south of the Isle of Wight has been defined as the South Wight Downland . Obviously there are many similarities between these three HEAP Areas. However, each of the Areas occupies a particular geographical location and has a distinctive historic landscape character. This document identifies essential characteristics of the West Wight Chalk Downland . These include the large extent of unimproved chalk grassland, great time-depth, many archaeological features and historic settlement in the Bowcombe Valley. The Area is valued for its open access, its landscape and wide views and as a tranquil recreational area. Most of the land at the western end of this Area, from the Needles to Mottistone Down, is open access land belonging to the National Trust. Significant historic landscape features within this Area are identified within this document. The condition of these features and forces for change in the landscape are considered. Management issues are discussed and actions particularly relevant to this Area are identified from those listed in the Isle of Wight HEAP Aims, Objectives and Actions. -

Wiltshire Botany 1, 1997, pages 1-2 EDITORIAL Wiltshire Botanical Society was founded in 1992. A large group of enthusiasts had been recruited and trained to observe and record wild plants in Wiltshire during the work for the 1993 Flora of Wiltshire. It was felt to be important to maintain this joint interest and activity. The Society was therefore inaugurated to act as a focus for its continuation. The aims of the Society, as enshrined it its constitution, are; • To encourage anyone interested in plants, both beginners and knowledgeable botanists. • To be a forum where members can learn more about plants and exchange ideas and information, eg by holding field and indoor meetings and by producing a newsletter. • To organize projects and working groups to study aspects of the Wiltshire flora. • To encourage a respect for and conservation of the Wiltshire flora and habitats. • To study and extend knowledge of the Wiltshire flora. The Society has maintained its membership, which now numbers 80-90, and has organized a consistently interesting programme of events. An informative and interesting newsletter has appeared regularly. A wide range of detailed work on the Wiltshire flora has been undertaken. To encourage and coordinate this work, a Science Group was set up in 1994. Its aims, summarized from the more comprehensive account in its minutes, are: • To encourage, advise and guide recording activities. • To play a part in the planning of meetings and workshops to maximise their educational impact. To facilitate identification of plant material. • To organize and publish records. • To ensure that surveys and other projects are carried out in as effective and scientific a manner as possible. -

The coloration in animals plays an important role in predator avoidance (Sweet 1985), inter- and intraspecific communication and sexual selection (Roulin & Bize 2006). Different color morphs occur in many reptiles, and the most frequent one is melanism, especially in snakes (Lorioux et al . 2008). There exist few advantages of this phenomen as: faster heating rates, higher mean body temperatures, protection from overheating (Luiselli 1992; Forsman 1995; Bittner et al . 2002; Tanaka 2005; Clusella-Trullas et al . 2008), but also disadvantages, such as higher predation risk (Clusella-Trullas et al., 2008). Melanism in European snakes has been reported for: Zamenis longissimus , Hierophis viridiflavus , Coronella austriaca , Platyceps najadum , Natrix maura , Natrix natrix , Natrix tessellata , Vipera berus , Vipera aspis (Terhivuo 1990; Cattaneo 2003; Zuffi 2008; Pernetta & Reading 2009; Strugariu & Zamfirescu 2009; Zadravec & Lauš 2011; Mollov 2012; Ajti ć et al . 2013). Can have mini scarps which are individually identified in some local assessments. Large scale character influenced by rolling topography, medium to large size fields, fewer wooded hedges than the small scale type and can have large woodland blocks. Large blocks of ancient woodland and varied height hedgerow network which contrasts with areas of more open predominantly arable fields. Deeply rural quiet landscapes with sense of space and expansiveness uninterrupted by development the large woodland blocks add to the sense ruralness and of an undeveloped landscape. River Avon at Bulford An Advisory Visit by the Wild Trout Trust June 2013 Contents Introduction Catchment and Fishery Overview Habitat Assessment Recommendations Making It Happen 2 Introduction This report is the output of a Wild Trout Trust visit undertaken on the Hampshire Avon on the Snake Bend Syndicate’s (SBS) water near Bulford, national grid reference (NGR) SU155428 to SU155428. The visit was requested by Mr Geoff Wilcox, who is the syndicate secretary and river keeper. The visit was focussed on assessing the habitat and management of the water for wild trout Salmo trutta. Comments in this report are based on observations on the day of the site visit and discussions with Mr Wilcox. Throughout the report, normal convention is followed with respect to bank identification i.e. banks are designated Left Bank (LB) or Right Bank (RB) whilst looking downstream. Catchment and Fishery Overview The Hampshire Avon is recognised as one of the most important river habitats in the UK. It supports a diverse range of fish and invertebrates and over 180 different aquatic plant species. The Avon (and its surrounding water meadows) has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC); however, much of the Avon and its tributaries have been significantly modified for land drainage, agriculture, milling and even navigation. 3 The Avon begins its life as two separate streams known as the Avon West and the Avon East, rising near Devizes and the Vale of Pewsey respectively. The Avon West is designated as a SSSI whilst for reasons unknown, the Avon East is not. -

Fifteen specimens of the slow worm, Anguis fragilis (two juvenile, five males and eight females), collected in Trabzon and Bursa Provinces, Turkey, were examined for helminths. Anguis fragilis was found to harbour four species of helminths: one species of Digenea, Brachylaemus sp. and three species of Nematoda, Entomelas entomelas, Oxysomatium brevicaudatum and Oswaldocruzia filiformis. In addition, DNA isolated from the Nematodes was analysed with clustal w and blast computer programs for nucleotide sequences. Anguis fragilis from Turkey represents a new host record for Brachylaemus sp. Also, 28s rDNA sequencing of Oxysomatium brevicaudatum and Oswaldocruzia filiformis produced new nucleotide sequences submitted to Genebank (NCBI: National Center for Biotechnology Information). To the knowledge, this is the first DNA analysis of the helminth fauna of Anguis fragilis. Key words: Anguis fragilis, Digenea, Nematoda, DNA sequence, taxonomy.
