Cardinal O’Malley has been a member of the foundation’s board for 12 years. He is also presi- dent of the Pontifical Council for the Protection of Minors and a member of Pope Francis’ Council of Cardinals. The Philadelphia-based Papal Foundation gives grants in support of projects and proposals recommended by the Holy See. Since 1990, the foundation has given over $100 million in grants in service to the Catholic Church. Cardinal O’Malley praised the work of the foundation, through whose grants, he said, “families and individuals in underserved areas around the world have experienced profound improvements in their lives.” “Churches, education and health care pro- grams, evangelization and vocation efforts all have been made possible through the extraordi- nary generosity of the women and men who work closely with the Holy See in providing funding for our brothers and sisters in need,” he stated. Uffizio, 11 00193 Roma, Italy Your Eminence: We, Executive Members of the International Marian Association, which consti- tutes over 100 theologians, cardinals, bishops, clergy, religious and lay leaders from 5 continents, wish to, first of all, thank you for the many excellent and courageous articulations and defenses of our holy Catholic Faith, as contained in your recently released, The Cardinal Müller Report. At the same time, we are obliged to express to you our grave concern regarding your comment from the text when you state: “(for example, the Church … does not call her [Mary] “co-redeemer,” because the only Redeemer is Christ, and she herself has been redeemed sublimiore modo, as Lumen Gentium [n. 53] says, and serves this redemption wrought exclusively by Christ… (p. 133). You unfortunately refer to this term as an example of false exaggeration: “falsely exaggerating per excessum, attributing to the Virgin what is not attributable to her” (Ibid.). Your Eminence, in making this statement, albeit as a private theologian since a public interview carries no authoritative or magisterial status, you have publicly stated: 1) a theologically and historically erroneous position, since the Church undeni- ably has and does call Mary a co-redeemer; and 2) a position which, in itself, materially dissents from the repeated and authoritative teachings of the Papal Magisterium, the historical teachings from your own Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith (Holy Office)and other Vatican Congregations; the pre- and post-conciliar teachings of the Magisterium as expressed through numerous cardinals, bishops and national episcopal conferences; teachings of the broader Church, inclusive of multiple can- onized saints and blessed who all do, in fact, assent to and theologically expand upon the authentic Magisterial teachings of the Church concerning Mary as a co- redeemer. -

Mga Milagro ng Birheng Maria (Miracles of the Virgin Mary): Symbolism and Expression of Marian devotion in the Philippines Mark Iñigo M. Tallara, Ph.D. Candidate National University of Singapore SUMMARY This paper is about Catholicism in the Philippines, highlighting the events, and objects on the popular devotion to the Birheng Maria (Virgin Mary), that could give fresh look onto the process of formulating an alternative discourse on religious piety and identity formation. This study also calls for more scholarly attention on the historical and religious connection between Spain, Mexico, and the Philippines, focusing on the legacies of the Manila Galleon that through them we can better appreciate the Latin American dimension of Filipino Catholicism. In addition to the goods, the Manila Galleon facilitated the first transpacific people to people exchange and their ideas, customs, and most importantly the aspects of religious life. This study will examine the symbolism and expression of Filipinos’ devotion to the miraculous image of Nuestra Señora de la Paz y Buen Viaje (Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage) or popularly known as the Black Virgin Mary of Antipolo1. What are the motivations of the devotees to the Black Virgin? How has the popular devotion to the Virgin Mary changed overtime? Observing a particular group of devotees and their practices could provide materials for the study of pilgrimage and procession. Then apply those features and analysis in order to formulate a method that is suitable for the study of popular piety in the Philippines. Although the origin of the devotion to the Black Virgin Mary of Antipolo is central to my arguments, the study will also take a broader consideration of the origins of Marianism in the Philippines. -

Church Realities in the Philippines: 1900-1965 Ramón Stephen B. AGUILÓS* 1. Introduction This year, 1998, the Philippines commemorates the centenary since her independ- ence from a foreign domination. At the time of this writing, it is «all-systems-go» for this former Spanish colony, with both government agencies and non-government organizations pooling all human and material resources for a successful once-in-a-lifetime celebration. In the academe, various historical societies have been organized —if not revived— both in the national and regional levels, in an effort to put into writing slices and fragments in history that have been for long relegated to oral traditions and folklore. «What happened to the Church in the Philippines of the post-Spanish era?» Or, «How did the Filipinos fare being Catholics after our forebears left their shores for good?». These are questions perennially posed by modern-day Spanish nationals about the country Spain had ruled for close to four centuries. A short paragraph culled from a paper presented to the Faculty of Theology of the University of Navarre in 1995 by a Spanish lady-scholar shows the demographic profile of contemporary Philippine Church: «The Philippines is a clear testimony of the good seed of faith sowed there by the Spa- nish missionaries, and the pastoral efforts of those who followed them thereafter. Navarrete Summer 2015 The Granada Venegas Family, 1431-1643: Nobility, Renaissance, and Morisco Identity © 2015 by Elizabeth Ashcroft Terry All Rights Reserved The Granada Venegas Family, 1431-1643: Nobility, Renaissance and Morisco Identity By Elizabeth Ashcroft Terry Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California-Berkeley Thomas Dandelet, Chair Abstract In the Spanish city of Granada, beginning with its conquest by Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492, Christian aesthetics, briefly Gothic, and then classical were imposed on the landscape. There, the revival of classical Roman culture took place against the backdrop of Islamic civilization. The Renaissance was brought to the city by its conquerors along with Christianity and Castilian law. When Granada fell, many Muslim leaders fled to North Africa. Other elite families stayed, collaborated with the new rulers and began to promote this new classical culture. The Granada Venegas were one of the families that stayed, and participated in the Renaissance in Granada by sponsoring a group of writers and poets, and they served the crown in various military capacities. They were royal, having descended from a Sultan who had ruled Granada in 1431. Cidi Yahya Al Nayar, the heir to this family, converted to Christianity prior to the conquest. Thus he was one of the Morisco elites most respected by the conquerors. -

Comme en 1997 lors du congrès de Saskatoon, notre rencontre coïncide avec le colloque annuel de la Société canadienne d’études rhétoriques (SCER), qui a pour thème « Incarnation de la rhétorique / Rhétorique du corps ». Ces deux rencontres internationales se dérouleront l’une à la suite de l’autre. Les séances de la SCER auront lieu les mardi et mercredi, 21 et 22 juillet 2009; celles de l’ISHR se dérouleront les jeudi, vendredi et samedi, 23, 24 et 25 juillet 2009. À cette occasion, nous accueillerons plus de 300 participants venus de quelque 30 pays pour présenter leurs travaux à la fine pointe de la recherche, prendre connais- sance des avancées dans le domaine et échanger avec leurs pairs, les interactions s’effectuant entre champs disciplinaires diversifiés (musique, médecine, politique, droit, littérature, communication, etc.), époques variées (Antiquité gréco romaine, Renaissance, modernité, postmodernité, etc.), langues et cultures différentes (européenne, américaine, asiatique, etc.).
