What makes a great writer? Philosophical depth, quality of writing, range, ability to move between registers, and the power to influence other writers and the age in which we live. Amis is a wonderful writer and incredibly influential. Whatever people feel about his work, they must surely be impressed by its ambition and concentration. But in terms of calling him a "great" writer, let's look again in 20 years. It would be invidious for me to choose one name, but Harold Pinter, VS Naipaul, Doris Lessing, Michael Longley, John Berger and Tom Stoppard would all be in the frame. AS Byatt Novelist Greatness lies in either (or both) saying something that nobody has said before, or saying it in a way that no one has said it. You need to be able to do something with the English language that no one else does. A great writer tells you something that appears to you to be new, but then you realise that you always knew it. Great writing should make you rethink the world, not reflect current reality. Amis writes wonderful sentences, but he writes too many wonderful sentences one after another. I met a taxi driver the other day who thought that. -

Ettensohn, Ph.D., Brown University, May 2014. This project evaluates the twinned discourses of globalism and humanitarianism through an analysis of the body in the postcolonial novel. In offering celebratory accounts of the promises of globalization, recent movements in critical theory have privileged the cosmopolitan, transnational, and global over the postcolonial. Recognizing the potential pitfalls of globalism, these theorists have often turned to transnational fiction as supplying a corrective dose of humanitarian sentiment that guards a global affective community against the potential exploitations and excesses of neoliberalism. While authors such as Amitav Ghosh, Nuruddin Farah, and Rohinton Mistry have been read in a transnational, cosmopolitan framework––which they have often courted and constructed––I argue that their theorizations of the body contain a critical, postcolonial rejoinder to the liberal humanist tradition that they seek to critique from within. -

G. Sebald, Kazuo Ishiguro, and Ian McEwan Elizabeth Andrews McArthur This dissertation analyzes how twentieth- and early twenty-first- century novelists respond to the English landscape through their presentation of narrative and their experiments with novelistic form. Opening with a discussion of the English planning movement, “Narrative Topography” reveals how shifting perceptions of the structure of English space affect the content and form of the contemporary novel. The first chapter investigates literary responses to the English landscape between the World Wars, a period characterized by rapid suburban growth. It reveals how Virginia Woolf, in Mrs. Dalloway and Between the Acts, reconsiders which narrative choices might be appropriate for mobilizing and critiquing arguments about the relationship between city, country, and suburb. The following chapters focus on responses to the English landscape during the present era. The second chapter argues that W. G. Sebald, in The Rings of Saturn, constructs rural Norfolk and Suffolk as containing landscapes of horror—spaces riddled with sinkholes that lead his narrator to think about near and distant acts of violence. As Sebald intimates that this forms a porous “landscape” in its own right, he draws attention to the fallibility of representation and the erosion of cultural memory. -

Crossing and the Letter: Caryl Phillips’s Crossing the River TOKIZANE Sanae1 Caryl Phillips’s 1993 novel Crossing the River is one of his ambitious explorations of the history of the African Americans. The title of the novel obviously invokes the idea of travel or voyage, traversing the distance, or journey across the boundary. It may be justifiable, therefore, to interpret it as representing the Middle Passage, the Atlantic journey undertaken by slave ships, and to read the novel as an intricate dramatization of the traumatic experience of slave trade.“Crossing the river,”however, implicates more than that. The stories of the novel include many crossings of the opposite directions. They depict not only the various lives of African descendents, but even the journey of a captain of a slave ship. And“crossing”touches the problems of border or trespass. It is true that historical and traumatic journey is one of the key critical concepts for reading this work and it may be a due course to start here, but the world of the novel temporally and spatially overreaches the problematic passage. The idea is not passing, but crossing. I focus on the title word“crossing”and argue that the question of crossing could open up a radical move. In this novel, in particular in the first section,“The Pagan Coast,”crossing is related with the meaning and function of the letter, the symbolic and practical bearing of which I believe will introduce us to the new and imaginative meaning of diaspora. (1) TheMiddlePassage Before going into the main argument, I would like to examine the diverse ideas of the Middle Passage and see how it can be developed into crossing. -

Lessley; Professor James Symons, second reader Abstract This study examines Tom Stoppard and Michael Frayn‘s incorporation of epistemological themes related to the limits of historical knowledge within their recent biography-based plays. The primary works that are analyzed are Stoppard‘s The Invention of Love (1997) and The Coast of Utopia trilogy (2002), and Frayn‘s Copenhagen (1998), Democracy (2003), and Afterlife (2008). In these plays, caveats, or warnings, that illustrate sources of historical indeterminacy are combined with theatrical stylizations that overtly suggest the authors‘ processes of interpretation and revisionism through an ironic distancing. -

WHS Book Rationale Title: Crossing the River Author: Caryl Phillips ● Intended Audience College Preparatory English 12 ● Brief summary and educational significance Crossing the River begins in the 1700’s as an African man is forced to sell his three children - Nash, Martha and Travis - into slavery. The novel then assumes a three part structure - a snapshot in time during the 1820s, the latter part of the 19th century, and finally the late 1930s-early 1940s. The three children from the beginning are symbolically represented throughout the novel with each of their voices distinct and individual as the reader follows the history of blacks from Africa, to the American West, and to Europe. A slave named Nash Williams is freed from bondage and sent to Liberia to convert native Africans to Christianity in the late-1820s. Narrated partly through Nash’s letters back to his white master, the reader gains an appreciation of not only the brutality and desolation of slavery, but the power of freedom even when it means living in poverty. Martha, an elderly black woman, is abandoned in Colorado while trying to travel with a group of black Pioneers to California. She grieves her lost child, and remembers the love of a man. Finally, Travis - a black American GI - falls in love with a white English woman named Joyce during WWII. This section is narrated in a non-linear fashion from Joyce’s point of view and exposes the bigotry and obstacles to mixed marriage and relationships during that time in history. The novel’s plot is complex because it is non-linear, and is told through multiple genres (letters, journals and a diary, the log of a slave ship). -

Footprints of Caliban: Appropriation of English in Selected African Fictional Texts Cheela Himutwe K. Chilala Prolegomenon This paper is concerned with the appropriation of the English lan- guage by African fiction writers. The paper refers to appropriation as Calibanisation—a term derived from the name of Caliban, the monster character who is disinherited and enslaved by Prospero in Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest. Caliban uses the European language taught to him by Prospero to resist the oppressor. This paper explores how some African writers have appropriated the English language to create an Africanised English. Some of the best examples of such appropriation of the English language are the fictional works of Chinua Achebe, especially Things Fall Apart. The paper also explores the use of the appropriation device in two Zambian fictional works: Before Dawn by Andreya Masiye, and The Chosen Bud by John Luangala. Few fictional characters have attracted as much debate as Caliban, the monster character of Shakespeare’s play, The Tem- pest.1 At the heart of this debate has been the contention by some schools of thought that Caliban’s experience is metonymic of the experiences of the colonised at the hands of the colonisers. They proceed from the premise that the relationship between Caliban and his master, Propero is a paradigm of imperialism.2 In this regard it may be argued that Caliban’s hostile attitude towards his master, Prospero, epitomizes one of the tools of resistance to, and subversion of, the colonial enterprise. More specifically, Caliban’s resistance is characterised by the appropriation of the master’s language, which, as Lamming argues, is one of the means by which Prospero colonises Caliban.3 Postcolonial literature, as exhibited on the African continent, is in part characterised by the appropria- tion of the colonial languages—in particular English—to carry the burden of the African spirit and culture. -
