What makes a great writer? Philosophical depth, quality of writing, range, ability to move between registers, and the power to influence other writers and the age in which we live. Amis is a wonderful writer and incredibly influential. Whatever people feel about his work, they must surely be impressed by its ambition and concentration. But in terms of calling him a "great" writer, let's look again in 20 years. It would be invidious for me to choose one name, but Harold Pinter, VS Naipaul, Doris Lessing, Michael Longley, John Berger and Tom Stoppard would all be in the frame. AS Byatt Novelist Greatness lies in either (or both) saying something that nobody has said before, or saying it in a way that no one has said it. You need to be able to do something with the English language that no one else does. A great writer tells you something that appears to you to be new, but then you realise that you always knew it. Great writing should make you rethink the world, not reflect current reality. Amis writes wonderful sentences, but he writes too many wonderful sentences one after another. National Centre of Biography, ANU Professor Elleke Boehmer: Nelson Mandela: A World Life Date: Tuesday 21 February 2017 Venue: McDonald Room, Menzies Library, ANU Time: 3.30 p.m. Inquiries: [email protected] Professor Boehmer will speak about Nelson Mandela (1918-2013), first president of democratic South Africa, as a world life—a national leader whose life also had global dimensions. How did this passionately nationalist leader, who identified himself completely with his country and his people, also appeal to the world? And what is his legacy for the globalised 21st century? His story of patient onward progression towards justice and democracy, as told in his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom (1994), traces one of the most resonant political stories of the twentieth century, whose influence impacted South Africa, and the rest of the southern African sub-continent, and by extension, if in highly mediatized ways, the world. Elleke Boehmer is Professor of World Literature in English, in the English Faculty at the University of Oxford. She is the director of The Oxford Research in the Humanities (TORCH) and deputy director of the Oxford Life Writing Centre at Wolfson College, where she is also a governing body fellow. She is General Editor of the Oxford Studies in Postcolonial Literatures Series, and she was a Man Booker International judge 2013-15. During February 2017, she will be a visiting fellow in the school of history, ANU. The author of five monographs and five novels, Boehmer is a foundational figure in the field of colonial and postcolonial literary studies. Her monographs are Colonial and Postcolonial Literature (1995, 2005), Resistance in Interaction (2002), Stories of Women (2005), the biography Nelson Mandela (2008), and Indian Arrivals 1870-1915: Networks of British Empire (2015). -

Ettensohn, Ph.D., Brown University, May 2014. This project evaluates the twinned discourses of globalism and humanitarianism through an analysis of the body in the postcolonial novel. In offering celebratory accounts of the promises of globalization, recent movements in critical theory have privileged the cosmopolitan, transnational, and global over the postcolonial. Recognizing the potential pitfalls of globalism, these theorists have often turned to transnational fiction as supplying a corrective dose of humanitarian sentiment that guards a global affective community against the potential exploitations and excesses of neoliberalism. While authors such as Amitav Ghosh, Nuruddin Farah, and Rohinton Mistry have been read in a transnational, cosmopolitan framework––which they have often courted and constructed––I argue that their theorizations of the body contain a critical, postcolonial rejoinder to the liberal humanist tradition that they seek to critique from within. -

(Nicole Brossard, These Our Mothers)1 The silenced and wounded body of the colonised is a pervasive figure in colo- nial and postcolonial discourses, although its valencies obviously shift with the transition from colonial into postcolonial history. In the postcolonial process of rewriting, certainly, the trope of the dumb, oppressed body undergoes sig- nificant translations or transfigurations, which this chapter will examine in closer detail. In Maru (1971), a novelistic indictment of intra-black racism, the South African writer Bessie Head stakes out a number of epigraphic moments with which to begin the discussion. Maru recounts the tale of a woman who learns to paint – to figure – and in so doing undergoes significant changes of status and position in her society: from having no place or recognition she becomes a figure in the community.2 This character, Margaret Cadmore, is marginalised on a number of counts: she is a woman, an orphan and above all a Marsarwa (more commonly known by the derogatory term ‘Bushman’). -

Chinua Achebe — It Is the Storyteller Who Makes Us See What We Are
caryl phillips Chinua Achebe — It is the Storyteller who makes us see what we are ’d like to say a few things about Chinua Achebe, which hope- Ifully resonate somewhat with our title — “It is the Storyteller who makes us see what we are.” I’ve been thinking about this title and have come to the conclusion that in the case of Chinua Achebe he was also a Storyteller who made us see who we are, or at least he certainly did in my case. I make the distinction between “what” and “who” as a way of suggesting that a personal encounter with him is likely to engender a transformation that is at least as profound as one we might receive by reading the remarkable body of his work. He was such an extraordinarily charismatic man, and having had the privilege of knowing him a little I would like to speak about both “what we are” because of his example, and more specifically “who we are” — or “who I am” — because of a personal encounter. First, Chinua Achebe is a storyteller whose very existence made it possible for a whole generation of writers to imagine that it might be possible for them to begin to think of themselves as writers. From 1958 onwards, his face was there on book jackets, in the newspaper columns, as part of an ongoing global literary conversation, and he established a presence at a very young age for a writer. As we know, Things Fall Apart quickly became a worldwide publishing sensation and not too long after- wards there was a canonical intervention; syllabi and university courses had to be — sometimes reluctantly — cantilevered into new shapes and groupings to include Achebe and his work, and the work of others like him. -

G. Sebald, Kazuo Ishiguro, and Ian McEwan Elizabeth Andrews McArthur This dissertation analyzes how twentieth- and early twenty-first- century novelists respond to the English landscape through their presentation of narrative and their experiments with novelistic form. Opening with a discussion of the English planning movement, “Narrative Topography” reveals how shifting perceptions of the structure of English space affect the content and form of the contemporary novel. The first chapter investigates literary responses to the English landscape between the World Wars, a period characterized by rapid suburban growth. It reveals how Virginia Woolf, in Mrs. Dalloway and Between the Acts, reconsiders which narrative choices might be appropriate for mobilizing and critiquing arguments about the relationship between city, country, and suburb. The following chapters focus on responses to the English landscape during the present era. The second chapter argues that W. G. Sebald, in The Rings of Saturn, constructs rural Norfolk and Suffolk as containing landscapes of horror—spaces riddled with sinkholes that lead his narrator to think about near and distant acts of violence. As Sebald intimates that this forms a porous “landscape” in its own right, he draws attention to the fallibility of representation and the erosion of cultural memory. -
